Earn 8.5% a year Buffett's way

Would you rather earn 8.5% a year or 2.4%?
Buffett won his bet with 5 Wall Street ‘professionals’ that the Vanguard 500 Index fund would provide a better return than the pros. The Index fund returned 94% vs 24% over 10years. Why don’t most investors use index funds? Most think the expensive Wall Street ‘professional’ managers are smarter than the market itself. Managers take a lot of fees from investors but 95% of them fail to match the market. No manager knows the future. No manager can know all the conditions affecting the companies. Luck has role.
Bet on Buffett’s strategy not on Wall Street’s ‘experts’: https://www.amazon.com/You-Beat-Wall-Street-professionals/dp/1986031373/

Warren Buffett provides FREE advice on how to beat the Wall Street pros
He bet a market guru on Jan 1 2008 that his SIMPLE advice would beat the professional money managers. He took a bow in his annual letter to his fund owners:
“A virtually cost-free investment in an unmanaged S&P 500 index fund would, over time, deliver better results than those achieved by most investment professionals …” And his choice did after inflation—8.5% a year vs 2.9%. “American investors pay staggering sums annually to advisors, often incurring several layers of consequential costs,” and with little to show. Buffett’s final message: “As an investor’s investment horizon lengthens, however, a diversified portfolio of U.S. equities becomes progressively less risky than bonds.” Read how a really successful investor earns over 19% a year.

Best last minute tax saving move
Tax filing began Jan 29 even though all the forms are late in arriving. If you find you owe tax instead of hitting the refund button this year, you may still be able to claim your refund. You can reduce your 2017 income and receive a tax credit. Credits reduce your taxes dollar for dollar. In effect, Uncle Sam can help you reduce taxes AND save for retirement at the same time. On line 32, Form 1040 or line 17, Form 1040a, you can enter up to $5,500 ($6,500 over age 50) as IRA contribution to reduce your income. If you meet the qualification, a credit will show up on Line 51, Form 1040 or Line 34, 1040a. You subtract this credit from your tax. EG: Income $66,000: tax refund is $3,335, without IRA contribution. With the contribution, the refund is $4,392 or $5,553 if you both make the contribution. Credit against tax is $400. IRS checks to see you have IRA.

Should you sue your employer’s 401k plan?
Retirement lawsuits are on the rise so employers are taking steps to protect themselves.
Experts warn that high fees, lack of investment options or poor investment options and breach of fiduciary duty are going to cost employers. Fee lawsuits have “exponentially increased over the past two years,” says Nancy Ross, a partner Mayer Brown in Chicago. “We saw a lot of it last year and we are seeing a lot of it this year.” Employees claim they are hurt by high priced retail mutual funds rather than lower cost institutional mutual funds, she says. For employers, it is cheaper to settle than to fight. Second, employees claim investment options include funds owned by the plan sponsor making them poor performers. Third, self-dealing, kickbacks and overpaying plan advisors are alleged.

IRS free filing sites avoid $300+ cost of filing taxes
Commercial tax prep sites offer expensive loans as advances on your refund but you can keep your whole refund using the IRS free filing partners. Refunds can be in your account within 2-3 weeks. Remember: IRS does NOT call you. The average refund is over $3,000. Check if you have a refund for a previous year—there is over $1 billion from 2014 alone. https://www.efile.com/unclaimed-irs-tax-refund-checks-and-bank-deposits/. Check your refund: https://sa.www4.irs.gov/irfof/lang/en/irfofgetstatus.jsp
You can create a tax-free retirement fund of $500,000 with that amount each year. If you need free tax preparer service for your 1040, use AARP Tax Aides near you. Bring last year’s return and ID: https://www.aarp.org/money/taxes/aarp_taxaide/. If you have a simple return: FreeTaxUSA or FreeFile: https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/jsp/index.jsp.

2018 new tax deductions for wealthy people
Trump removed the income limitation on certain deductions. Medical expenses and charity remain important factors that help avoid taxes. For some, bunching together these categorical expenses will help overcome itemizing thresholds. Investment fees are no longer deductible so consider alternative advisory services. The AMT forced some to pay tax despite having substantial deductions. For example, Trump had to pay $31 million in AMT in 2005 despite owning $ millions worth of buildings with tax deductible depreciation. His new law removed the AMT so he is free to live almost tax FREE. His new tax law retains the deductibility of real estate depreciation. In his case, he paid 25% of $153 million in 2005 taxable income instead of the less than 4 percent that he would have paid without it. The Tax Credit Class will again avoid paying their fair share.

Is a ‘Digital Annuity’ right for you?
Wall Street has come up with a new trick for the old high-cost deferred annuity. The new ‘lipstick’ on the old pig is called Blueprint underwritten by New York Life and Guardian Life. After the initial investment, buyers can increase their retirement income stream with deposits of as little as $100 a month to create what Blueprint calls “a personal pension.” We did this at Thomson McKinnon in the ‘80s, calling it IRO—Individual Retirement Opportunity. Of course these annuities are loaded with fees—1-4%. Don’t be surprised to hear about Blueprint on “The Today Show” as one of the investors is Jean Chatzky. The ‘lipstick’ is this: “For every dollar you put in, you know how much more you will have on a monthly basis when you retire.” Future projections have always been the juice in selling annuities—and also their downfall. The ‘guarantees’ are based on promises about rates of return in the future and no one knows rates for sure. Wall Street is out to capture 401k money as we invest for retirement. An annuity is an expensive way to mimic (at lower payouts) the guaranteed pensions of the past. Don’t be fooled by lipstick.

What do you do with your RMDs?
As a tax preparer, I hear about where people put their refunds and required distributions from pensions, IRAs, etc. all the time. RMDs are annual amounts the IRS requires you to pay tax on starting after age 70.5. Some use the RMD to pay bills—some are still using a mortgage for tax deductions. Some up their charity giving for the same reason. Some travel if they like that kind of thing. Some put it back into savings. Of course they can’t fund an IRA but they can use it to convert a traditional into a Roth by paying the tax due. Follow the rules: https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p590a.pdf. There are no income or age limits on converting any amount from a regular IRA to a Roth IRA. The earlier you do it, the more tax-FREE income you may have later. I take $10,000 a year from my IRA, pay income tax and add $10,000 to my Roth IRA so that in 10 or 20 years, I have double or triple the amount. If I don’t need it later, my heirs will have tax-FREE income too.

Are you making Fidelity owners wealthy?

Are you making Fidelity owners wealthy?
Your fund fees gave the Johnson family a boost. Fidelity Investment’s income rose even as its investors quit its active trader funds. Active trading fund investors are moving to passive funds on the realization that fees and trading reduce their earnings. Buffett won his bet with 5 Wall Street ‘professionals’ that the Vanguard 500 Index fund would provide a better return: 94% vs 24% over 10years. Why don’t most investors use index funds? They think the Johnson family has managers that are smarter than the market itself. They earn a lot of fees from that myth.

Budget tight?  Buy new car or $1 million retirement?
Should you use $300 a month for a new car or your $1 million nest egg?
That is what it comes down to for many people: Current pleasure of being seen in a shiny new car or silently investing for a great future. Let’s do the math. $300 a month for 7 years pays for a new chevy. By then you will need to buy another one so you will spend another $300-400 a month. Most people go through 9 cars while working. Consider buying $1 million nest egg instead: Buy used cars with cash from your tax-FREE investment account. After you have invested that $300 a month for 7 years in a low-cost market account, you will have about $35,000 from your $25,200 contributions. You can take $10,000 from this account without taxes to buy a new used car. After going through this same pattern of investing instead of using your payments for a new car, your tax-FREE investment account will provide you with a $1 million retirement fund. Yes, you will not have to pay tax on money for your cars or for your retirement income.
New cars or $1 million fund—which is for you?  https://www.amazon.com/Go-Tax-FREE-Investing-Income-Forever/dp/1482633280

GOP has no plan to stop Putin-Trump election meddling—“aiding and abetting”
Aiding and abetting is a legal doctrine related to the guilt of someone who aids or abets in the commission of a crime. It allows a court to pronounce someone guilty for aiding and abetting in a crime even if they are not the principal offender. “Russia, if you are listening, find the 30,000 emails that are missing,” is clearly encouragement. Trump admits he fired Comey because of “this Russia thing with Trump,” is clearly complicity in the crime after the fact not to mention obstruction of justice.
Conclusion: Trump as commander in chief and Congress with the power to declare war on cyber criminals is ignoring the acts of war by Russia. Both fail to protect our democracy.
If they were doing their duty, they would be protecting us from Russian cyber war. Trump failed to carry out Congress law on more Russia sanctions. GOP thinks of Russia, which is out to destroy democracy, as an ally.
WOW! Reagan turns over in grave.
Can we say that this sounds like Benedict Arnold? He received money and other things of value from the enemy. As Jr said, “We see a lot of money pouring in from Russia.” Putin may have discovered something that Trump wants more than being president. GOP wants to hold power at any cost: President does money laundering, sexual assaults, lack of leadership, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy with Russia to win election.
Former presidents have faced impeachment for lesser crimes. Clinton charged with lying. Nixon subpoena before resigning. Trump guilty of aiding/abetting the enemy, obstruction of justice, failure to protect us in war, misuse of power, violation of emoluments clause, sharing secrets with enemy in Oval Office, inciting violence by incendiary remarks, lying about immigration, lying about trade. Mueller will need to indict Trump kids before he resigns—son and daughter have no clearance and using their office to make private deals.

Electrics are not perfect either
Experts say a Toyota Prius software fix may reduce fuel efficiency. Meanwhile, some owners of Tesla’s Model 3 are reporting quality problems. These vehicles have been at the top of most quality and reliability surveys. Battery overheating still remains a problem. Perhaps new technologies need to time to sort out long-range use. JD Power still finds a 3-year-old Lexus has the fewest problems. Cadillac fell to poor while Kia rose. Buick remains high on the list. Used cars to avoid include the most expensive, according to Consumer Reports. Some 1-year old cars lose 30% ($11,000) of value. Electrics and new technologies don’t seem to help when it comes to insurance costs either. Consumer Reports found that there were almost no discounts for new technology like blind-spot warnings. Trump adopts NRA new line—more guns in ‘hardened schools’
But he promised no guns in schools: Trump denied wanting guns in school: Tweeted ‘Wrong’ to Hillary accusation I want guns brought into the school classroom,”
Formerly, NRA said “no guns in schools, period.” Now gun battle is for your ‘freedoms’ not guns. Makes it look like the gun lobby is saving democracy. They sell GUNS.
Now Trump wants guns and “hardened” schools—like banks. NRA proclaimed “hardened” schools and more guns to fight other Americans in TV advert.
Parkland had armed guard but high school shooter got in and out as student. Virginia Tech had teachers with guns and couldn’t stop killer.
Now Trump mimics NRA—Dictator Trump wants to scare voters: Dems want to take away your 2nd Amendment ‘freedom’ to kill your ‘enemies’—other Americans.
FL legislature already decided NOT to have discussion about assault weapons in FL. Arm the teachers.

What can go wrong when we don’t use Buffett as our advisor?
Harvard’s highly paid money managers thought they could manage risks other schools avoided. They blew $1 billion in bet on tomatoes, sugar, and eucalyptus. Don’t feel sorry for Harvard or all the other wealthy school endowments. They still have $37.1 billions to lose. However, because these smart people think they can earn more by paying more expensive managers, they have earned only 4.4% a year over the last 10 years. They and MIT, Columbia, Princeton, and Yale would have been better off going with Buffett’s advice. If you used him as your advisor, you would have earned 8.5% a year for the last 10 and more years. In fact, Buffett’s choice of mutual funds would have earned 11% before inflation. Forget paid advisors. They can’t even make money for the wealthy.

Saving taxes in 2018
Take advantage of these steps to save the most in 2018. If your tax bracket fell, you might see more in your paycheck. However, there are other serious ways to save on taxes. 1. contribute more to your 401k, 403b, or IRA especially if your employer matches contributions. 2. use your HSA if your health plan is high deductible as a tax-FREE fund for later. 3. have more kids: child credit doubled. 4. use a 529 education account for tax-FREE growth for current and future kids. 5. convert your IRA deposits into long-term tax-FREE retirement income each year as you go. 6. start a side business to deduct some of your expenses that will not be deductible with the new standard deduction of $12,000 and $24,000 for joint filers and the loss of deductions for state and property taxes. (NJ property owners may use charity instead.) Since our higher tax brackets return in 2026, it may take us another generation to pay off the $2.4 Trillion extra bonus Trump gave to his wealthy friends.

Did you lose money by selling?

Did you lose money by selling into the down market?
Most Vanguard mutual fund owners did not follow Wall Street’s advice to sell to avoid losses. Amid concerns that passive index fund investors would sell out of their positions at the first sign of a correction, clients at Vanguard showed little response to the stock market volatility of the past few weeks. Long-term investors (not speculators) don’t panic. They don’t do brokerage program trading. Vanguard announced that it had passed $1 trillion in 401k plan assets as of the end of 2017. Vanguard’s advice: Stay diversified.
      Tune out the noise.
      Control what you can—costs.
      Revisit your asset allocation.
      Set realistic expectations.
Maybe we all should listen. Stocks are on sale: https://www.amazon.com/Vanguards-Top-Ten-mutual-funds/dp/150073909X

Why did Trump claim his wealthy friends hate him for the new tax law?
Most tax analysts say he lied about this claim. In fact, some project that Trump saved himself over $11 million with the stroke of his pen. The new bill allows people to deduct up to 20% of the income they get from pass-through businesses. Real estate investors like Trump obtain special benefits from the law. Most of Trump’s friends will benefit greatly from the elimination of the AMT and estate tax. Using estimates from his 2005 return, Trump would save $31 million each year. Plus his wife and kids get to spend all of the $3-10 billions he leaves instead of just 60% of his net worth. Wow, that is huge for most of his friends. We must conclude that Trump’s statement was ‘fake news’—he and his friends will pay less for years and run up our debt so much that we will need to pay more taxes after 2026. His plan gives permanent breaks to friends but ours would end in 2025.

Many corporations close US locations even with $millions in subsidies/incentives
Trump promised to bring back or save jobs for those with skills of the old America. But even after receiving tax-breaks, perks, subsidies and incentives of over $10 millions, Harley-Davidson will close its Kansas plan despite pleas from Congress. Why? Sales are down. 1000 of people will be affected. This was their American Dream—work for a great American company and enjoy the community built over the last 20 years. Even with foreign sales growth, net income plummeted by more than 80-percent in the fiscal fourth quarter of 2017. The Kansas output will move to York PA’s plant. Trump can do nothing about the changing demographics of customers. Take Intel chips. Why expand $5 billion plant in Israel? Disruptive change continues to benefit a relatively small group of mega-cap companies with dominant technology platforms. Robert Reich has pointed out that those who have lost their jobs to foreign outsourcing or labor-replacing technologies are unlikely ever to get them back. One study find that trade with China and the rise of robots are to blame for millions of the missing jobs. Other popular scapegoats, such as immigration, food stamps and Obamacare, did not even move the needle.
For those who found new jobs, the pay is awful. For instance, Ford will add 1,200 jobs in Chicago at HALF the pay current workers made when they started. Many people will lack the money needed to buy all the goods and services the economy can produce. The economy will slow and the Trump tax revenue will not meet his promises. Our taxes will need to go up to pay for the wealthy tax cuts.

Buffett’s SIMPLE investment strategy beats Wall Street’s best traders
He beat Wall Street ‘professionals’ with his strategy of just owning the market. Buffett's index fund gained 94% over 10 years. Protégé's selected funds gained 24%. His strategy provided over 11% since 1976. Your money doubles every 7 years. The Master of investing, Warren Buffett, proved it, again. You do NOT need Wall Street 'professionals' to reach your financial goals. In fact, if you use them, you may give up 63% of your potential accumulations because of trading, charges, commissions and fees. Buffett’s SIMPLE strategy earns over 11% per year. DALBAR keeps track of returns and found that the average managed-account equity investor earned just 3.79% a year over 30 years. The benchmark returned 11.06%. You and I can start beating Wall Street with one phone call. Earnings are tax-FREE after age 59 ½ in special account too.

Will your 401k provide enough income in retirement?
Trump promised everyone would have more money from his new tax law. Will this help you have enough later on? Since our lower tax rates will be eliminated by 2026, you need to use your extra income to boost retirement savings now. Most Americans will NOT end up with enough to continue their present lifestyle after they stop working. Even now we see more workers re-entering the labor market because they need money. Surveys say 55 to 64-year-olds have an average of $104,000 and those 65 to 74 have $148,000 in savings. If that money were turned into a lifetime annuity, it would only amount to $310 and $649 respectively per month. Adding SS benefits of $1,342 a month would mean about $2,000 a month. Can you live on that?
The folks that have enough retirement income are those that put their investing on automatic: They had their pension, 401k, or IRA trustee debit their paycheck so that they were not aware of saving/investing monthly. Some employers even give them money. Our government lets us deduct these contributions during our lifetime so we avoid tax as we save. These folks have $5,000 a month not $2,000 a month to spend using automatic.
Have enough: https://www.amazon.com/Your-Retirement-Spending-Plan-enough/dp/1461084016

Is it time to claim Trump’s 20% free profit with rental real estate?
The Trump tax law offers a unique opportunity to participate in tax-free earnings from real estate investments. Home values are climbing in most places but 2018 is not 2008 and you need to know the new rules. Smaller lenders want to lend if you have a 740+ credit score and over 20% down. Owner financing and HELOC loans are alternatives. Shop for foreclosure bargains. Make sure the rents cover ALL your expenses. Line up handymen for help. Hands-on owners usually have greater success. Use LLCs to protect your assets and collect your 20% tax-free profits. You may not benefit from the end to the AMT or estate tax like Trump, but rental real estate is one of the favorites of working millionaires. You can create a stream of income that can keep pace with inflation.

Why some Americans can’t file … yet
Congress had second thoughts about their “well-crafted” tax law and so on Feb 9 they passed a 2019 budget with some extra “extenders” which expired in 2016-17 but were made retroactive in 2018 for 2017. Yes, they can do that. Anyway, if you have three of the ‘outlawed’ deductions, you will have to wait to file or file an amendment. The IRS was baffled saying, the IRS is “reviewing the legislation signed Feb. 9” and will provide information when they can. Meanwhile, if you bought storm windows and doors like I did, you wait for a new 1040 form. Currently, that line says "Reserved for future use." The IRS will have to destroy millions of forms and instructions to get it right. 18 million tax returns have been received and processed. GOP seems eager to waste as much tax money as possible given The Don’s tank parade and tax forms that could have been avoided. The parts that most likely impact us include extensions for:
  • exclusion from gross income of discharge of qualified principal residence indebtedness [mortgage modified/forgiven]
  • mortgage insurance premiums treated as qualified residence interest
  • above-the-line deduction for qualified tuition and related expenses
  • credit for nonbusiness energy property
  • credit for residential energy property
  • credit for new qualified fuel cell motor vehicles
  • credit for alternative fuel vehicle refueling property
  • credit for 2-wheeled plug-in electric vehicles [Zero’s “massive torque”]
If you own horses or a mine, there are goodies just for you here.
If there is a bigger refund or a cut in your bill, you can ask your preparer to fix it with a 1040X. You need to recalculate your old return and tell the IRS the changes only.
Congress was so busy last year repealing our health care, they didn’t have time for these.
I will file late for a couple of $ hundred extra. Congress ran up debt further to $21T. I used to be a Young Republican but they changed their beliefs, morals, ethics, standards.

New cars lose 40% of value—are new cars worth it?
Many cars just last longer. Some claim 70% of their cars are still on the street. Used luxury cars have a history of reliability and safety. The first cars with disc brakes and all around airbags were luxury brands. New cars have more problems because of innovation and technology that may attract new buyers. Without a warranty, the consideration must be: how much time can you afford to spend without your ride? If we can spend or finance $16,000 for transportation, we have great choices. Shopping could not be easier. You don’t need to be good at haggling since all the information you need is online. Thus you get an idea of what your trade-in is worth at https://www.kbb.com/whats-my-car-worth/ and then look at the JK Power dependability stats at http://www.jdpower.com/press-releases/jd-power-2018-us-vehicle-dependability-study. Look up the best values in your area at https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/instantMarketValue.action and https://www.edmunds.com/. You can test drive anywhere but you may want to travel 60 miles to pick up a bargain. Is gas mileage or comfort your important criterion?

Why some people ‘buy back’ a state pension
A client worked in a state agency for years and left to take another job. 14 years later she got back into the state public education system. After another 14 years, she was about to retire but her pension would not have been as great as if she had stayed in the very lucrative state pension system. She was offered a chance to buy back the years she missed so her pension amount would be greater. At age 65 she had to pay $95,000 to get back those 14 years worth of pension credits. How did she do it? She used her one asset—mortgage-free home valued at over $250,000—to obtain a HELOC with no closing costs. Now her pension monthly income covers the HELOC and she may receive over $300,000 extra during her lifetime payout. Plus, the home equity loan interest is deductible.
