Time to buy stocks!

Time to buy stocks?

The stock market is down 12% so far this year. For the long-term investor especially, this is the time to BUY. Stocks are on sale. The long-term trend is still positive—9-11% returns over time. If inflation continues at present levels, you will need those levels of return to maintain your purchasing power, especially in retirement. If you sell all stocks and buy bonds or cash, you will have little gains in future years. You may lose money. The last times we had volatility; the stock market fell and rose again. (Google IVV MAX for returns since 2000) If you had stayed in the market, your money has increased 204%. Compare other asset classes like precious metals, real estate, cash, Treasuries. Yes, less volatility but less compounded returns. Buffett’s secret: “My wealth has come from a combination of living in America, some lucky genes, and compound interest.”

Putting your refund to good use

The average refund is $3,000. Save the $300-$600 tax prep cost by doing your tax return using IRS-approved tax software via IRS free file. Or AARP free tax prep. Do not mail your return since IRS is still processing 2019 paper returns. I just got my refund! Have your refund put in your account directly—direct deposit is the safest way to finish your taxes. Take all your credits: Child and Dependent Care Credit was supercharged through the 2021 American Rescue Plan. Parents can receive a tax credit worth as much as $8,000 — nearly four times the previous limit of $2,100. The Child Tax Credit provided funds throughout the year but some families may have been shortchanged. The expanded Child Tax Credit, by comparison, provides $3,600 for each child under six and $3,000 for children between 6 to 17. The fact that the tax credit is also fully refundable is important because it could boost the tax refund that many parents receive this year. Invest your refund each year and you could have $500,000. Start your tax-FREE retirement fund so you have enough later on. When you can no longer work, you can spend ALL of your investment earnings—no taxes. This helps avoid taxes on your Social Security too.

What’s your retirement income look like?

Before you quit your job and retire, you need to see if you will have enough income. The earlier you do this the better—you may need to hang on for a while. You can get an estimate of your Social Security benefits at ssa.gov/benefits/retirement/learn.html#h2,

Ask your HR department for your estimated income from a company pension or retirement plan. Will your pension provide cost of living increases and pay some of your health care expenses? If you may be doing a ‘back door’ Roth IRA conversion, wait for Congress to decide on the BBB bill, expert Ed Slott says. Finally, you can estimate how much income you might receive from your savings/investments with a Monte Carlo income calculator like Vanguard’s. Is your spouse’s income included? Are there any forgotten 401k pensions from former employers sitting out there? Are you planning on staying in town with your current friends or moving? Are you getting financial support from other sources? Are you likely to arrange a phased retirement with your employer? What are you planning to do with your time? Will you have enough income? How will you handle health care costs before Medicare kicks in?

Why Trump and kids have subpoenas

NY State thinks he has defrauded businesses because he faked the value of his assets in his financial statements. For instance, he claimed his Westchester golf club was worth less than the tax assessor said so he paid less property tax. He also claimed deductions for claiming the forest in the front yard of his mansion would never be developed. Since his accountants are now admitting their returns are not to be trusted, his businesses may have fake deductions and asset values. His business partners are suspicious. His business manager has already been spoken to so he will have few other people to blame for fraud. He may have been involved in money laundering in his real estate deals. His kids may have been involved. His normal response is to delay any confrontation so this prosecution may take more time. If he is reelected, he will not be able to claim the privileges of the president or replacing of the prosecutor since this is a state violation. Remember, he told us he does not pay taxes because he is smart. Or maybe just a criminal fraudster.

When do you need to hire an advisor?

Financial advice comes in so many forms, you need to make a careful selection or you will pay more than you need to pay. For instance, if you pay a salesperson to manage your money, you could be giving up 63% of your potential overall earnings. One analyst calculated that if you pay annual expenses, trading costs, and poor trading timing, your total expenses can cut your earnings in HALF. If your investment returns average 7% and you pay 2%, your net is 5%. Inflation averages about 3% so you are accumulating at 2%--not much better than a guaranteed 10 year Treasury. Because sales people are notoriously bad at beating a simple stock market index account, you could be giving up earning 11% gross over time. On the other hand, if you need financial advice like charting your retirement income projections, you could pay a one-time fee to a fee-only fiduciary planner. Financial planners listed reflect FPA CFP® Professional members in your area. This assures you that you are not being sold an expensive product or service. You pay a fee for a report/advice like you would pay a lawyer.

FREE unbiased investing advice from real professionals

Charlie Munger, Vice Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, speaks at the Daily Journal Annual Meeting. With Warren Buffett, Munger has grown wealth for stockholders in

Berkshire Hathaway. If you don’t have time to listen, his take on a rich and happy life:

Avoid treating the stock market like a casino.

Avoid speculating in cryptocurrencies.

Avoid doing something because you see someone else get rich doing it.

Avoid anything so addictive to you that you give up everything else. For some, it could be alcohol. Others, it could be video games. Others ‘playing’ the market.

Avoid “pretentious expenditure”.

Avoid holding large amounts of cash.

Buffett is more explicit: own 2 low-cost Vanguard stocks for retirement. When you have stock assets, your money compounds at higher rates when your account fees are 0.01-0.05%, not the retail rates of 1.5-3%. You don't have to settle for retail products that are structured to provide your advisor’s firm with higher revenues. The average investor earned just 3.79%, not the 10-12% market rates. (QAIB)

Why reinvesting stock dividends can provide better returns

Dividends are paid to stockholders when corporations earn profits. Usually, these companies are stable money makers like Microsoft, Johnson & Johnson, UnitedHealth, JPMorgan Chase, Procter & Gamble, Home Depot, Visa, PepsiCo, and Broadcom. Owning shares provides cash that can be reinvested in more shares and produces the Miracle of Compounding. Dividend increases plus share price increases amount to compounded returns of 11% a year or more. One such fund is low-cost Vanguard Dividend Appreciation Index. Over time, several of our readers have turned their $500 a month investment into over $100,000 in 10 years.

Surprise Medical Bills

Flaw in ban on Surprise Medical Bills

If you have a medical emergency, you will no longer need to worry about a large bill from a doctor you did not choose—MAYBE. The 2022 “No Surprises Act” is supposed to protect us against most surprise out-of-network medical bills. For Good Samaritans who donate organs this has always been the rule. However, because of the complexity of dealing with 4 or more institutions regarding medical procedures and their medical billing procedures, you may get caught in a fight with bill collectors they sell the ‘receivables’ to. (Remember, bill collectors get paid to collect the debt they purchased, not to correct a mistake a previous institution made.) Also, know that our Reps gave some providers’ lobbyists a break in which charges are exempt from the law. The ambulance industry CAN charge you even if you didn’t pick the one the in-network institution uses. Another example: I just got a bill from a provider I did not pick. My doctor immediately called in his favorite X-ray person in the same building to do my X-ray since I was in need and the machine was down the hall. So in our medical system, each entity that provides something; anything; that can be coded (an aspirin, X-ray, swab kit, glove, cold/hot pack, etc etc) will add to our bill. If you look at your hospital bill, you will be shocked to find an aspirin can cost $30. If you insist on brand Tylenol instead, it costs more. A trip to the hospital can cost more than a bomb the Air Force pays to arm its fighters.

What we regret most

Regret: I wish I had done something or not done something in the past. In The Power of Regret, Daniel Pink asked 16,000 in 105 countries about their top regrets. People regret not building a strong foundation — that is, not saving money early, not being prudent," Pink says. "With financial regrets, they're less about not hitting a home run and more about not regularly getting on base." It is TIME in the market not brilliant advisor stock picking that builds wealth. No advisor can be right all the time so in the long run, you lose more than you gain. The average advisor-managed account earned just 3.79% vs 11% for a pure low-cost stock market index fund. It is the high fees and bad market timing that ruins your investment plans. Starting early, using your average tax refund or $250 a month in a low-cost stock index fund like Warren Buffett recommends provides your best chance of providing an above average retirement income.

Avoid advisor fees: https://www.amazon.com/New-American-Retirement-System-ReserveTM/dp/1461030072

Why unbiased financial leaders say use a fiduciary

A fiduciary is a person or organization that acts on behalf of another person or persons, putting their clients' interests ahead of their own, with a duty to preserve good faith and trust. Being a fiduciary thus requires being bound both legally and ethically to act in the other's best interests. This is the kind of person you want to handle your money and life choices. Otherwise you become an ongoing meal ticket for a salesperson and their firm’s owner. Fidelity owners, the Johnson family, have a net worth of 36 Billions. They did not get to that level working 9 to 5. They take fees every year from your savings and investment accounts (if your money is at Fidelity). On the other hand, Vanguard Group of funds is owned by its investors. You get financial products and services at cost: No middle person fees and charges. Low-cost stock index funds, like Warren Buffett recommends, provide you with your best chance of gaining an above average retirement income. Earn market rates of return not the Johnson’s rate. I don’t work for Vanguard. I moved my money from Fidelity because I earn more at Vanguard. They just cut their fees againTarget Retirement Funds—1/5th the cost of others. I keep more!

Another way wealth people make us pay their taxes

Passing on $ billions tax-FREE to the kids who never have to work and contribute to our society. Shale King Harold Hamm Is Passing Billions To His Heirs Tax-Free. If the kids don’t pay taxes on their $2.3 billions, we will be stuck paying for the courts, highways, airports, and armed forces they depend on. His lawyers carefully structure transactions so they benefit heirs but aren’t technically gifts at all. Thus no gift or estate taxes are paid. Yet he controls the company that provides the wealth. Filings show Hamm used an LLC and more than a dozen different trusts to complete the transfers. Phil Knight used a variety of techniques to move billions of dollars to his family tax-free. Eric Yuan transferred $6 billion worth of shares to unspecified beneficiaries for “estate planning” reasons last March. Late casino mogul Sheldon Adelson shuffled shares of Las Vegas Sands Corp. in and out of more than 30 trusts to pass along at least $7.9 billion to family members. Cosmetics heiress Jane Lauder became an overnight billionaire in 2013 when she received L’Oreal SA shares worth more than half a billion dollars. Our so-called ‘representatives’ wrote the tax laws that let them pay NOTHING. You have one way to avoid paying THEIR taxes.

If you earn less than $100,000 a year, start investing NOW

The only way to have enough income in retirement is to start early. Why? Because most working people need time for the Miracle of Compounding to accumulate a large nest egg. It takes large contributions or a long time to have enough retirement assets to live on later. For instance, investing $250 a month for 35-40 years will provide a retirement income of about $45,000 for 30 years. You would need to triple that—or invest $750 a month—if you only have 25 years left to invest. If you wait to start, you will need $2,500 a month for 15 years to reach your goal. This assumes you can earn 10% a year on average in a low-cost stock market index account. This is the type recommended by Warren Buffett. If you rely on a high-fee broker/advisor, it may not be possible to reach your goal at their average of 5.19% annual earnings. Low cost beats high cost over time.

Use the Miracle of Compounding: https://www.amazon.com/Miracle-Compounding-Turn-day-into/dp/1470176513

Take all your special 2021 credits to offset taxes

2021 was a difficult year for most working Americans. The fact that the tax credit is also fully refundable is important because it could boost the tax refund that many parents receive this year, experts say. Tax credits are dollar-for-dollar reductions in a person's tax liability, versus deductions that lower a person's overall taxable income. Save the $300-$600 tax prep cost by doing your tax return using IRS-approved tax software via IRS free file. Or AARP free tax prep. Do not mail your return since IRS is still processing 2019 paper returns. I just got my refund!

Social Security is the best annuity available

Insurance companies make a lot of money from annuities because you receive less than you invest with them. Yes, you are guaranteed payments for the rest of your life but unless you pay more now, your benefit will be cut by inflation over time. That means you receive less and less each month in buying power. At current levels of inflation your benefit will be worth about HALF the current payments in 20 years. Compare SS benefits: annual inflation protection—in 2022, benefits were increased by 5.9% at no extra cost to you. There is no policy charge, commission, admin fees, surrender charges, mortality expenses, investment expenses, or inflation rider fee. You can also create a low-cost income stream like an annuity to supplement your SS benefits.

Advisor's universal advice

Advisor’s universal advice: “Long-term investing isn’t sexy. It just takes patience.” There is only one way to make sure they have enough for later life, this advisor warns athletes. “You’re wealthy today, but that doesn’t mean you’re going to be wealthy tomorrow.” “[They] get real loosey-goosey with the money they have in their bank account,” the advisor says. “You may be making $2 million one year — but the next, you could get cut and make zero.” Years ago, players were going broke or bankrupt after football. Now the NFL will match what they put in their 401(k) up to 200%. If you don’t have a matching 401k or 403b at work, an IRA can provide the same huge nest egg in retirement—it just takes time. There are two IRA flavors—tax-deferred or tax-FREE. A traditional IRA allows you to deduct up to $6,000 from your annual taxable income. You pay tax later when you take the money out for retirement income. A Roth IRA allows you to contribute AFTER tax money so your life-long gains in the account will be tax-FREE. $250 a month in a low-cost stock market index fund may grow to $1,000,000 in 37 years. You have contributed $111,000 but the full $1 million is tax-FREE. This may mean no income tax on your SS benefits too. $1 million to spend just takes patience.

You don’t need to earn an NFL salary: https://www.amazon.com/New-American-Retirement-System-ReserveTM/dp/1461030072

Winning a contest or gambling is NOT the way to wealth

Amy Schneider Faces Tax Bill Of Over $630,000 After Record 'Jeopardy!' Win. Schneider won $1,382,800 but almost HALF goes to taxes. A better way to build wealth is to pay NO taxes on your income. Our tax system does provide a better way: tax-FREE earnings using a legal tax haven so that every penny you earn can be spent—no taxes. Hopefully Schneider has used this tax-FREE account for her regular job. She could have invested in the IRS-approved account during her work years and accumulated over $1 million and NOT have to pay taxes on the full $1 million. Avoid taxes like the rich.

Use your tax haven: https://www.amazon.com/Your-Tax-Haven-Tax-FREE-Americans/dp/1482659441

You quit: What to do with your retirement money

People are looking for flexible work arrangements, higher pay and job security in their careers. Many are willing to leave their jobs to find something better. But what do you do with your old 401k or 403b? Some companies allow you to leave it in your old plan. However, you will need to monitor closely what is going on there. Sometimes when companies change hands, the former workers can’t get their money out right away or at full value. Unless you are planning on taking your nest egg now to live on (and pay the 30-40% lump sum taxes), you have the option of keeping your balance growing. You may need 30 years worth of retirement income so most people make a tax-FREE transfer to a new job plan or to a rollover IRA at a mutual fund firm. Each time I left my employer, I had the Vanguard custodian receive my old job account directly into a tax-FREE rollover account. This avoids the chance that the old plan clerk tells the IRS that you took the money without paying taxes. It is very difficult to undo a mistake of this sort. You can’t put the “genie back into the bottle.” When the money got to Vanguard, I told the trustee to put it in the same kind of investments I owned in my old 401k. I never paid a dime in tax along the way to a comfortable retirement income.

Why stocks are the best tool to beat inflation

Inflation is happening now at 6-7% annualized. My 69 cent can of beans went to $ 0.79 in 1 week. Gas, food and rent are more expensive so my income can’t keep up. My fixed income pension and investments have less buying power so I must buy less of everything. I buy half a dozen eggs instead of a dozen. For my readers who have most of their investable assets in low-cost broad-stock market mutual funds, they will be able to keep buying what they have been buying. Their accounts are down only 5% so far. They are not traders or cyber speculators. They expect their total returns from stocks to maintain the average of 10-12% nominal. If inflation returns to the 3% historical average, they gain 7-9% staying ahead of any cost increases. There are no guarantees but as Warren Buffett has done in his will, his heirs will prosper from his mandate of using a low-cost stock fund for retirement growth and income. Low-cost beat high-cost in every period.

Take his advice: https://www.amazon.com/Warren-Buffetts-Vanguard-Funds-Retirement/dp/1496148592

Do you need a financial advisor?

The for-profit industry thinks you should pay one $ thousands. But how do you find one who can help you without taking most of your earnings. One industry insider calculated that paying 2% in fees, trading, and poor timing will deprive you of up to 63% of your potential accumulation. Over your life of saving for retirement, you could end up with $ 2 million or less than HALF that. There are money managers, securities sellers, financial planners, RIAs, and discount brokers. You must decide which you need, so ask a lot of questions: costs, taxes, legacy, risks, strategies, large mutual fund firm or small ‘boutique’ firm, DIY or full service, fiduciary or trader, family or lowest bidder firm. Shop around. Maybe you need one of each type. One sales person can’t do it all.

It’s your money: https://www.amazon.com/New-American-Retirement-System-ReserveTM/dp/1461030072/

Congress people make $ millions on stock trading info we don’t have

At ‘work’ Congress people use "insider trading" with their privileged information. We pay their staff to find information on the issues of the day. Example: they learn early which vaxx maker used, which firm will get gov contract for new weapon system, which oil fields will be leased to which oil co, which new gov building built where, etc. They learn which companies will merge, go bankrupt, fail and be investigated before we do. House Rep Pelosi, listed as the eighth biggest trader in 2021, is not the only lawmaker whose disclosures reveal millions of dollars worth of transactions. Congress works the system they create: they write the tax laws about their own businesses, that provide subsidies to their donors, that fund the Import Export bank that supports Boeing, that even pays themselves as gentlemen/women ‘farmers’. This is socialism for the rich and connected. Government helps the wealthy stay wealthy.
