Is ‘Liability-Driven’ investing right for you?

What to do when the market is down?

Buffett has often advised investors to buy quality stocks when they are on sale like now. He is doubling down on his energy bets like Occidental and Chevron. He bought more Apple too. Celanese is another of his dip buys. Will these be the winners of the future? Who knows? Even Buffett is not always right so you can diversify by buying an energy index on sale. Or you can buy shares in the largest growth firms like Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, and Tesla. Of course some of my readers buy quantum computing firms like RGTI or IONQ for the future. Some buy the Vanguard Top Ten on the assumption that these funds will continue to return 11% throughout their retirement.

Can a fee-only financial planner help you?

Goals, Inventory Identify Distribution, Tax, and Estate Issues and Opportunities are the steps you need to take to be assured of retirement income. For example, if you inherit an IRA from a non-spouse you are required to liquidate the balance of the IRA in a more compressed time frame than previously expected. “A good planner can help you understand the effect of current legislation and make appropriate adjustments to the financial plan to account for the changes.” Slight shortfall: If you will have less income than you planned, you can address gaps in income using some basic strategies. You may also need conversations about adjusting goals and ensuring those goals still fit your situation. Severe shortfall: If you have not prepared for retirement and it appears unlikely that you will meet your income goals, a planner can suggest strategies you may employ to improve the situation. You will need difficult discussions about redefining your family’s goals. A planner can help you implement your retirement income plan including when to start Social Security, pension, IRA RMDs, etc.

Should you claim Social Security benefits early?

Many advisors suggest you wait to claim benefits because every year you wait may increase your benefit by 8%. In our family, I was not able to find a new position after my financial services company was merged and I was “redundant.” I started at age 62 and have been receiving HALF of what I qualified for if I had waited until age 67, my full retirement age. Luckily my spouse kept working and filed after age 70 so the maximum possible benefits are being paid to make up for my decrease. For the rest of our lives, I will receive about HALF what my spouse receives. We were lucky we met with an SS rep so we qualified for larger benefits. Of course the rules have changed and they are complicated. I recommend you obtain an appointment at your local office if you can. If that is not possible, buy an analysis. It is important to understand what you could receive: benefits can easily top $1 million over 30 years of retirement for a couple.

Is ‘Liability-Driven’ investing right for you?
Your advisor may have suggested this strategy. Liability-driven investing attempts to match your portfolio’s investment strategy with future liabilities. Liability-driven investing is typically associated with a defined benefit pension, but is becoming more popular with advisors helping individual clients investing for retirement. For most people this strategy is the same as the investing bucket strategy. You segment funds among different time horizons or risk tolerance bands in order to keep a withdrawal rate that corresponds to time left in retirement. Thus your money is sitting in 1. short-term bonds or CDs, 2. balanced funds and 3. long-term equities. Your ‘liabilities’ are your expenses or obligations. If you need money available in 1-2 years, you tap bucket 1 and so forth. Returns are usually greatest from your equity holdings so you keep growing your assets for use later. Your advisor may be using more sophisticated terms but the strategy is the same as the common sense one Buffett recommends.

Investment behavior research and your biases

Why do we hold on to losers and sell winners? Why do we engage in vigorous trading when studies show we lose money? New studies about our way of thinking about money have provided some guard rails that may keep us from big mistakes. Fact: we spend more time planning a vacation than planning for our financial future. People with money have a plan—investment and retirement plan. People who most NEED a plan don’t think they need one. Set goals, find strategy, set up plan. List financial goal priorities. Know your biases and avoid them with help. For example, we buy a stock or fund that just went up. It goes down but we don’t face it and lose more money. Or if the stock goes up we feel we must sell to win. Instead of diversifying a portfolio for safety, we buy more of the same. Many keep buying their own company stock. We know this strategy is risky so we worry instead of investing in a plain index fund. Even with new information, investors stick with their original purchase. We tend to think we are super brilliant when our purchase does well. Most of us mistakenly rely on past performance. Usually winners become losers during the next period. Buffett’s strategy beat best advisors.

Let Warren Buffett be your advisor: https://www.amazon.com/Warren-Buffett-Your-Investment-Advisor/dp/1518690963

This is what your advisor says when they don’t want you

Advisors work in an industry that requires them to make money from your money. Are you happy with a service that you have no way of knowing if you are getting the right level of service? Advisors don’t want to lose you if you are going to give them $ millions in assets. They don’t want to lose you if you could have $ millions in assets. But they only have so much time and they must produce revenue for themselves and the firm they work for. They don’t want to waste time with you if you take up too much time for too little revenue. So how do they get rid of you without making you mad or worse making the person who referred you mad? The term they like is ‘FIT.’ You don’t ‘fit’ with their minimum revenue goal or you don’t ‘fit’ with their type of services. As sales people they have learned the kind of customer to seek and keep. Their object is to make money so if you don’t have enough or will cost them more time than they can spend, you will have to learn how to help yourself. Millions have had to learn to manage their own financial life. You must understand what your advisor means: time to leave or stay.

Women are more vulnerable to a retirement income shortfall

Women are more vulnerable to a retirement income shortfall

When Social Security benefits are cut sometime after 2034, women will be hurt. Women live longer and have greater health expenses than men. Women rely on SS benefits more than men yet because of lower income, receive fewer SS benefits. Fewer women have their own well-funded IRA to supplement their incomes later. Fewer women have employer paid pensions. Women have lost seniority due to child rearing. Finally, women have lost wages over years of suffering the unequal pay gap. Thus, cutting benefits by 25% or so as planned by the current Trust forecast will bring women near poverty straits. Will the male-dominated GOP respond to fix this emergency with new taxes soon so that the Trust has time to accumulate a useful balance? Maybe not. This leaves women workers with the options of working longer, staying married (or with other family), finding more affordable housing/living situation or creating a new income source.

https://www.amazon.com/Ensure-Your-Financial-Health-Wealth/dp/1466388293

Is Social Security in your future?

In order to receive our full benefits in the future (2034 and beyond) we need to have more people who pay the FICA tax working. Since fewer children are being raised in the US and fewer immigrants are being allowed in by the GOP, there will be a shortage of workers to pay for future Social Security benefits. In addition, wealthy folks with income over $147,000 are exempt by GOP from paying FICA. So we need to make a change in one of these determinants. Workers and employers already pay their fair share—7.65% each. Congress could save Social Security for us by lifting the exemption. We are at risk to the politics of wealthy Americans maintaining their privilege. Our future may be more like the economies of poor countries—very wealthy owners and very poor workers. Some working people can afford to wait to claim higher benefits. Most working people can’t afford a lump-sum payment for an annuity to replace SS benefits. Most workers (80% by a recent survey) feel they aren’t saving enough (or simply don’t know how to save) for retirement. This leaves workers with the options of working longer, staying married (or with other family), finding more affordable housing/living situation or creating a new income source.

Consider the options: https://www.amazon.com/Maximize-Social-Security-Benefits-Retirement/dp/1495439224

Retirement planning—the good, the bad, the ugly

If you have started to think about or talk to your advisor your retirement, that’s good. If your advisor has begun to pitch an annuity, that’s bad. When you have estimated how much income you will have compared to your expenses, that’s when it gets ugly. Most retirees wish they had started saving/investing earlier. Well, that can’t be helped now. You started when you started. What can you do now? Why do advisors push annuities? If you have a large lump sum, annuities can provide a guaranteed income to you (and your advisor). However, many insurers are cautious about guarantees. They have been burned by low interest rates and so limit ‘guaranteed living benefits’. People are living longer so the benefit, that ‘lasts a lifetime,’ may lose HALF its purchasing power in 20 years. If you have kept your money working in equities, you can sustain your current income level for longer than an annuity can. Plus if you or your family has an emergency, you can use your portfolio. Usually you cannot cancel an annuity without a large charge.

Buffett recommendations for investments in retirement

What is one of the world's greatest investor's retirement advice? Use 2 Vanguard funds for your retirement income. You avoid “high-fee managers” and the high cost of trading.  Warren Buffett's legal will provides for his family by directing that his cash assets be invested in just two Vanguard funds: One will provide cash for the coming year and the other will provide for a sound future. The best way to protect your family's future is to be invested in the stock market: Pure and simple. When you have stock assets, your money compounds at higher rates when your account fees are 0.01-0.05%, not the retail rates of 1.5-3%. You don't have to settle for retail products that are structured to provide a Wall Street firm with higher revenues. The average investor earns just 3.79%, not the 10-12% market rates according to the DALBAR record keeper. A simple plan can save you the pain of retirement income blues. Retirees regret a little saving and planning workout.

What is the New American Retirement System?

Best annuity for your retirement

Some annuities cost you nothing and the benefit increases automatically without you paying more premium. Some annuities are tailored to your age so that you receive more later and less earlier. Some annuities cost a lot. Some require no extra payments. Some annuities can provide a growing benefit and still provide a lump sum for emergencies. Some annuities provide a benefit only—the beneficiary cannot surrender the remaining principal. Some annuities are tied to an underlying high-cost variable account. Most annuities cannot be cancelled. Some annuities provide a periodic benefit for one or two lives. Some pay a benefit for a certain time period. Get the right one for your lifestyle.

https://www.amazon.com/Your-FREE-Annuity-Stream-Lifestyle/dp/1497438616

What is the New American Retirement System?

Protect your family and assets with your financial wealth. Borrow from your System to pay for large purchases. Buy whatever you need without going into debt to others. Self-insure manageable risks—invest the premiums saved. Buy financial services wholesale--save $3,000 a year. Manage your System in 1 hour per year. $2 million can produce $160,000 a year in retirement. There are no taxes either.

This book will show you how to:

Create a $2,000,000 tax-FREE Retirement System.

Use the best legal tax shelter: no taxes . . . ever.

Tax-favored over a 401k even with 6% match*

https://www.amazon.com/New-American-Retirement-System-Reserve/dp/1461030072

Retirement savings amounts very skewed to the wealthy

The average account balance was $141,542 for 2021; the median balance was $35,345. This disparity means that a small number of plans with very high balances skews this often-quoted average upward. The American middle class has a difficult time saving for retirement with low wages, high inflation and increasing housing expenses. Not everyone is benefiting from the tax deduction for contributions since many small employers do not offer 401k plans. The self-directed IRA requires starting early to obtain the maximum benefits of tax-favored savings. Very few high school curriculums offer a tax-benefit IRA course. It is up to parents/grandparents to get their offspring started on the journey.

https://www.amazon.com/Give-your-child-leg-manage/dp/1096505355

Is a money market account right for you?

This account, available at most financial institutions, is favored by anyone who says, “I don’t want to lose money in the market.” For instance, Vanguard Federal Money Market Fund’s investment objective is to seek to provide current income while maintaining liquidity and a stable share price of $1. However, maintaining a stable share price of $1 means that you cannot keep your purchasing power over time. Thus your money is not ‘safe’ and over time, your $5000 will buy less than it did before. Yes, you will earn interest but you will also owe taxes on any gain. A bank savings account may be a better vehicle for short-term savings. If you are saving for retirement, a ‘safer’ place for your money is a balanced (stocks and bonds) mutual fund. Over time you gain part of the positive market return in the form of share price rising and also stock dividends paid and bond interest earned. Some of my readers use such an account for their emergency short-term needs since they have accumulated quite a balance over time. “Borrowing” $5,000 from their $250,000 balanced mutual fund like the Vanguard Wellesley Income Fund costs them little. That $5,000 may be repaid to their account in a year or their gains on the $245,000 in a year may be enough to cover it. Remember, “never bet against America.”

Use Buffett’s strategy: https://www.amazon.com/Warren-Buffetts-Investment-Strategy-Forget/dp/1484822900

Why investing the same amount of dollars each month is important

Smart investors have learned the trick of investing to accumulate the greatest number of shares with the same amount of money each month. Over time, you receive fewer shares when the price is too high and more shares when the price is low. You are buying without overpaying for shares. Last December, for example, shares were expensive so your monthly investment of $250 bought one share of Vanguard Health Care Fund. But in June 2022, your $250 bought 1.358 shares (shares were cheaper). In this way, if you had started buying shares 10 years ago, your $250 would have purchased 1.689 shares. You can see that over the last 10 years, you would have more than 200 shares not 120 shares at the higher price. In 30 years, with more shares and the share price appreciation (dividends and increased value), your $250 a month investment may be worth over $500,000. This strategy is called ‘dollar-cost averaging’: you buy low and accumulate more shares. Over time, shares worth more. And you can make it all tax FREE.

Light is both a particle and a wave depending on how we look at the light.

I don’t think that there is any such thing as a position or a velocity of a particle.

Everything in universe: galaxies to stones made of subatomic energy ‘vibrations’

A subatomic ‘particle’ is the smallest possible vibration (quantum) of a quantum field.

Mass–energy equivalence: E=mc^2.  At the smallest level; Everything is moving!

There is no TIME at this level because of force fields come and go in all directions.

Inside protons, neutrons, it is the fields of the virtual particles that creates its mass.

“Empty space is a boiling, bubbling brew of virtual particles that pop in and out of existence in a time scale so short that you can’t even measure them.” Space expanding.

The electricity we use comes from the field around the wire not from election itself.
