Our ‘Representatives’ let the rich pay less tax than we pay

Our ‘Representatives’ let the rich pay less tax than we pay

A married couple making $200,000 a year could end up paying higher tax rates than a person making $200 million a year. That is the conclusion we see from analyzing the 15 top income earners. Some pay nothing just like the most profitable corporations. Who makes the rules that make the American progressive tax system a lie? They are the people we elect who take campaign funds (bribes) from these same wealthy folks. As one of the wealthy admitted: "We don't pay taxes. Only the little people pay taxes." When our Reps create systems that help wealthy folks hide their income, the tax rules can’t be used. The rich have no earned  ‘income’ to tax. They hide their assets in legal entities that can’t be taxed by any method. Meanwhile working people pay about 32.9% total tax. We can’t avoid SS, Medicare, property, Fed and state income taxes. We can’t hide from taxes since we don’t have dummy corporations, trusts, oversees entities and many other legal tricks. For instance, Jeff Bezos with $177 BILLION net worth had so little ‘income’ in a couple of recent years that he was able to pay $0 in federal income taxes in those periods. Our Congress creates loopholes so the rich have NO income—so no taxes—and never get audited. For instance, they can live on a loan financed by their assets. Loan income isn’t taxed: a $ billion asset can produce $100 million a year. The IRS can’t even figure out their schemes. We live under “socialism for the rich.”  We pay for the airports, highways, sports teams, courts, police, military, subsidies they use. They pay little.

When to start taking your Social Security benefits?

Use this free calculator to maximize your benefits: https://opensocialsecurity.com/. There are a lot of issues in this decision for some people. SS benefits are usually taxable. For others like myself, I had to begin early because I could find no work in my career field. For others like my wife who was still working and building her final pension, the wait till age 70 was a way to increase her benefits to the maximum—about $1 million. Your situation is unique and this decision is worth between $500,000 to $1,000,000 in income over a lifetime. Get help using free sources, including a visit to your local SS office or pay a fee-only financial planner to help you calculate all your income sources and potential tax situations. A commission or paid-fee sales person may not provide the best unbiased advice. Always get a second opinion if a certain product is recommended.

How much did you have to pay for Twitter?

Musk bought Twitter with loans instead of selling his stock. He paid no taxes by using his ownership of Tesla to get the loan. You and I would need to pay capital gains tax if we sold our new car to buy an older car. When people buy a car from him, you and I give Musk a $7,500 subsidy—total $7,021,290,000 on 936,172 sales in 2021. Despite selling all those cars, Tesla paid nothing in taxes on a record profit of $5.5 billion in 2021. You and I pay more taxes/national debt since Tesla paid nothing. Elon Musk's net worth has surpassed $300 billion but he pays taxes at a rate much lower than ours. Elon Musk paid less than $70,000 in federal income taxes between 2015 and 2017, and he did not pay anything in 2018, according to recent reports. But even though we helped Elon pay for another asset he owns, we will receive nothing except paying for his avoidance of taxes. We and our kids will pay for the subsidies over time as we pay off the national debt. When people sue Musk for his mistakes, we pay for his use of court and judges from the taxes we pay and he doesn’t. It is a great system for the wealthy and powerful.

Tax-refund Millionaire-- https://www.irs.gov/refunds

Most people spend their tax refund—your refund could be a retirement nest egg

Michele had trouble saving. She seemed to always be waiting for her next paycheck. She never had enough to save for a rainy day like her Mom did. She used to make about $35,000 as a shop manager but with federal, social security, Medicare and state taxes, unemployment, disability, and health insurance, she was not able to put anything away for retirement. Years ago, her local tax preparer suggested she use her tax refund to create a retirement fund. Usually Michele would use her refund to pay bills or buy something special. The tax preparer said that if she agreed to start an IRA with $2,000 of her refund, she would be able to increase her refund—Uncle Sam would help her save. The amount she invested would reduce her income and make her refund larger. The $2,000 could grow over time, if she left it in stock mutual funds in her IRA account. Over time, it has grown large enough that she will have enough for retirement.

Which portfolio is the best for you now?
We are entering a time of high inflation and higher interest rates. What your advisor should be emphasizing now is a broadly diversified portfolio. Some advisors are pushing crypto for retirement even thought crypto is a speculative asset. Crypto may sell TV time but beware the dangers. Stocks are necessary because they are the most likely to overcome inflation in the long run. When interest rates are rising, fixed rate bonds are going to decrease in value. The bonds you can buy today will provide less interest in the future so few will want them and they will be reduced in price. When you compare the potential value of commercial real estate, you will hold on to your REITs. Commodities have been on a wild run recently with the Vanguard Index hitting 56% for 1 year. This fund represents a potential hedge against inflation risk and as further diversification for a traditional stock/bond portfolio. Keeping your money in a portfolio with a set of low-cost funds may be the best way to deal with the current uncertainty. No advisor can know the future so controlling your costs and taxes may be the best choice for now and the future. Learn yourself and save.

Annuity substitute

The annuity industry is pushing for Congress to have your employer include these expensive products in your 401k retirement options. Instead of moving your money to an IRA and taking the money for retirement income monthly, you would pay an insurance company extra to send you a monthly check. Employers used to offer a pension that you could count on to never run out of money. In return for your loyalty working for your company for 20-40 years, your boss would make sure you had income for the rest of your life. Sometimes employers even continued paying your spouse and included health care too: no longer. Since the 1980s, employers took the money for pensions and increased payout for senior management and stockholders. Employers passed the expense and investment risk to working people. Managements were still guaranteed their $ millions. The employees were given a couple of bucks to invest without knowing about investing. Most have done a poor job of guaranteeing a living retirement income. Employers are happy to pass on the responsibility to the insurance industry by encouraging workers to pay more for an annuity. The selling point is lifetime guaranteed income—but at a much smaller amount.

Consider annuity alternatives: https://www.amazon.com/Best-Annuity-Strategy-Income-Growth/dp/1497532019

A cost-effective emergency fund

If you own your home with some equity, you can set up an emergency fund at no cost. If you had an emergency expense like medical emergency surgery that was not covered by your health plan, where would you get the money? Would you go to your family, a 25% credit card, or file bankruptcy? A low-cost alternative would be a HELOC—a home equity line of credit. At the current 4% interest, you would be able to handle your emergency now and pay back the self-loan at your own pace and avoid overpaying for interest. HELOC amounts are tied to the equity in your home, a good credit rating and home appraisal. There are no closing, administrative or lawyer costs—little or no out of pocket costs until you use your line. Save $3,000 on fees, commissions, overcharges. Retirees use RMD not annuity to empty their nest eggs

How to cut credit-card debt

How have you started the New Year? Most folks are in the negative for their portfolio. Usually a down market means it is a good time to buy stocks or their funds. However, inflation is taking every last dime so far. In order to make your paycheck stretch farther, you can cut expenses to pay off the debt so you are in the positive by year end. We had been paying for a storage unit. We had a lawn sale to make money and end the lease. We cut out Netflix and lowered our cable bill. Instead of our usual week in Maine, we used our tent instead of our usual motel. We already had a paid membership in the National Parks so we could hike around Acadia for a week and ate at Jordan’s and Aloha. We grabbed a 0% interest balance-transfer offer and paid all of our other CC balance in full. We took advantage of 2 $200 bonus offers and used $400 to attack our debt. We concentrated on knocking the principal to $0 in one year. We quit eating out and found a fantastic low-cost café for lunch once a month. Our tax refund cut our principal to 1/3 its original size.

Retirees use RMD not annuity to empty their nest eggs

New retiree use of in-plan lifetime annuities to draw income for the first time fell to 18% in 2018, from 62% in 2000. Most retirees count on some form of tax-deferred account for income in retirement. Social Security was never meant to be the sole source of support. It has become the only nest egg for many low-income households because American business stopped offering lifetime pensions. For retirees with tax-deferred accounts, an annuity may be offered by their employer plan as a source of income for the rest of their lives—guaranteed. However, inflation can cut the annuity benefit in HALF in 20 years after employment. Annuities are expensive to fund and to get your money back. For many, the IRS required minimum distribution (RMD) calculated by their mutual fund complex offers the best solution. It fulfils the legal tax requirements based on life expectancy and helps you plan your income for the rest of your life.

Buy your financial services without sales person costs

If you shop at Costco, BJ or Sam’s Club, you know that you can save a lot by buying without a sales person. For the benefits of buying this way, it is best to know what you need or want. There is every reason to save on financial services by buying this way—without having to pay a sales person. Find out what you need by using unbiased sources—books, website articles and knowledgeable agents. For instance, using government sites that explain coverages and types, you can decide to buy straight term life and basic car coverage legally required in your state. Then, using a consolidator, you compare insurance prices for you by multi-carrier internet sites. For mutual funds or single securities, the regulator Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has information to help you choose which type to use in your 401k, IRA, or cash account. Stocks are the safest for long term investing since they beat inflation over time. Money needed for an emergency can be left in a bank CD. In all cases, shop and compare. For instance, a low-cost stock index fund provides a greater nest egg than a licensed advisor. You can lose up to 63% of your total accumulation to costs.

Have you taught your child how to make tax-FREE money?

Make sure you teach your kids how to create wealth the easy way. My parents were not investors. At my first job, I had no clue which investment option to use for my 401k contribution and company match. The HR person told me to put it into the 'safe' stable value fund. That was the worst choice at my age I learned later when I got my securities licenses. If I had followed their advice I would have ended up with $150,000 instead of a Wealth Reserve of $877,233 about 33 years later. I have used this 'Wealth Reserve' as I call it to have funds to buy low-cost insurance, to buy two homes and 5 cars with higher down payments or cash, and now to receive $2,500 a month in retirement supplement. Now your child can build an account that provides tax-FREE retirement income too.

Will crypto assets support your retirement?

Easy tax filling

Online IRS approved software is easy as answering questions. I have been using the Free-File vendors for years at https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free. I have used TaxAct, FreeTaxUSA, and 1040NOW.NET. I pay a small fee to have the same return filled in my state of New Jersey. I avoid all the commercial sites that say they are ‘free’ since they usually charge for some special form needed each year. In fact, one of the commercial sites, Turbo, has been notified by the FCC to stop claiming their service is ‘free.’ The benefit for using sites like FreeTaxUSA is that next year they have kept your name and address data so you don’t have to reenter your bank, broker, employer, etc data. This data will prompt you to find info that you may have not received or have forgotten to obtain. Some reviewers claim these sites are not comprehensive but I have found FreeTaxUSA to provide all the forms and calculations for our return of about 46 forms/pages. Plus we get our refunds by direct deposit in about 3 weeks. Check for your refund: https://www.irs.gov/refunds. Due Monday April 18.

Use all the tax credits you can: https://www.amazon.com/Tax-Credit-Class-your-credits-ZERO/dp/1539462382

Will crypto assets support your retirement?

Many working people expect to receive huge gains from this new investment type, despite knowing very little about it according to a new survey. Responders were asked: ‘Where do you expect the greatest return on your investments over the next 10 years?’ Unfortunately 30% think crypto will provide the biggest investment returns. Stocks are second with about 20%, mutual funds 11%, real estate and NFTs show single digits. Younger people expect to retire earlier than older people as expected. Unfortunately, crypto is the newest ‘get rich quick’ scheme in the press and the top scam mechanism. Since schools do not teach young people how to invest for retirement, it is up to their parents with limited financial literacy to teach them. Most don’t know about the tax-FREE account available to everyone.

https://www.amazon.com/New-American-Retirement-System-Reserve/dp/1461030072

Do you use the power of compounding?

Most high schools don’t teach the most important aspect of managing your money. Most average middle-class parents don’t know how wealth is made. Sure they have heard that some people become wealthy by creating a new biz like Google or winning the lottery or inheriting their family legacy. But most young people don’t know how to use the miracle of compounding which Warren Buffett credits for making him wealthy. If your math teacher mentioned it at all, they probably used the illustration of how a savings account grows: a deposit of $1,000 grows to $1,010.05 in a year. Not exciting enough to remember by the time you start earning real money. If schools were allowed to teach compounding with examples from the real world, everyone would show this financial miracle at work. Thus a teacher would show the actual results of real returns documented by DALBAR, the unbiased tracking firm. For the long-term investor, the SAFEST investment is a low-cost stock market mutual fund compounding at the rate of 11%. An honest math teacher would then show a chart like the one of real accumulations over time in this book. The teacher could build a real table showing $250 invested monthly for 35 years with a total accumulation of $1.2 million:

Not all wealthy hedge funds do well

Things have gone from bad to worse at Tiger Global Management’s flagship hedge fund. The hedge fund tumbled more than 13% in March, according to a person familiar with the matter, capping three straight losing months and a tough 2021. The decline was 7% last year, its first annual drop since 2016. Hedge fund managers produced aggregate performance of 10.3% in the year ended Dec. 31, down from 11.8% the previous year, returns of the HFRI Fund Weighted Composite index showed. Compared to a simple low-cost stock index fund return of 28.83% in 2021, 18.38% in 2020 and 31.74% in 2019, hedge funds have suffered from their high fees and costs. Instead of trying to pick securities and leverage returns, many wealthy folks would have been better off leaving their money in a stock index fund like the Vanguard 500. As a group, hedge funds have a net outflow because high costs must still be paid to managers. Tax-FREE account approved by the IRS is a better deal than a wager on a hedge fund manager.

Why are we paying a higher tax rate than the wealthy?

Bloomberg earned over $2 billion but paid only 4.1% in taxes. Ultra wealthy high-income Americans are not only privileged—they beat the system and pay less tax than we do. For them it is a game: not paying taxes. “That makes me smart” one confessed during the presidential debates. Jeff and Elon paid nothing recently helping to pump up the national debt—our children’s debt. Most corporations pay nothing. The middle-class pays more than most wealthy people according to Warren Buffett. We pay total taxes of 32.9%. They pay under 20%. The American system is withering away.

https://www.amazon.com/New-American-Retirement-System-ReserveTM/dp/1461030072

You don’t need a financial industry sales person

I have been in the industry since 1987 and I came to the conclusion that most middle-income families can’t afford to lose up to 63% of their hard-earned savings/investing to the financial industry. From the inside, I saw that most financial clients are wasting their money on the tricks and hype presented by most sales folks. After obtaining all of the licenses from the industry, I can tell you that you don’t need to pay for the biased self-serving advice from the industry. The best and most useful information is available FREE—books and internet provide exactly what you need to be a successful investor and financial services consumer. First, no advisor knows what will happen with a security or the market next. Second, we know the probabilities of investment success by security type. Stocks and low-cost stock mutual funds provide 11% return over time—more than 10 year periods. Third, fast trading hot stocks finish last. Monthly dollar cost averaging provides the best method of investing. Fourth, buy all financial services from direct sellers not salespeople. Get three estimates of costs before you buy anything. Costs matter: https://www.amazon.com/Keep-Simple-Essential-Financial-Life/dp/1492258849
