Recession talk scare you?

Where to put your money if recession talk scares you?
There is talk of recession since people who claim they know economics get paid to scare us. Since no one knows for sure when and how this event will take place, we are on our own to decide what to do. Some are already running for their money market accounts even with low rates compared with inflation. Clearly stock and bond markets will be unsteady. Our choice, as always, will be decided based on our time horizon. Warren Buffett is looking for bargains at this point. He already had tons of cash. But he isn’t selling his portfolio as if the world will give up on capitalism. Long-term stocks will beat inflation. Our cash and bonds may help us avoid a big plunge in current account values. However, like Buffett, we should hold our long-term investments with a balanced approach. If we need cash in the next year we should have been accumulating it up to now. Many of our members have been buying the balanced fund Wellesley Income for years since it has maintained a return of over 9% since 1970 with low expenses.

Elder bankruptcy up
Bankruptcy has increased to 12% from 2% in 1991 for retired persons. Weakened trade unions, stagnated wages and the disappearance of pensions are among the factors that contributed to rising elderly bankruptcy. Many retirees also face rising medical costs as they live longer than expected and Medicare covers a smaller share of their health care needs. What can pre-retirees do? Contrary to what many people think, saving for retirement can help employees boost their ability to pay their student loans, according to a CNBC article. That’s because pretax contributions to traditional retirement plans can help minimize their adjusted gross income. Since the monthly student loan payments are based on AGI, a lower AGI could result in lower payments. “Any time you can put money into your qualified retirement plan at work, it’s always a good thing,” according to an adviser. The most important factor in avoiding a lack of cash later is using the miracle of compounding as early as possible. Compounding can double your money in 7-10 years. Thus doubling your 401k contributions to low-cost stock funds even at age 50 can improve your nest egg three fold. Warren Buffett says compounding made him wealthy.

Is your advisor helping you this year?
If you are paying your advisor for money management—1-2% of your TOTAL nest egg—you have a right to ask this question. What is their track record? The market has provided 9% for the last 10 years including -37% in 2008 (2008-2018). So far in 2019, you should have earned over 17% with 11% long term returns. If that ‘professional’ advice you are overpaying for has not been useful, perhaps it is time to switch to Warren Buffett’s strategy. When you need special advice you could pay for it at the CFP’s hourly rate like a lawyer. $750 for 3 hour review of your plan vs $7,500 over 10 years of fees. Otherwise, Buffett recommends low-cost index funds. Morningstar has found that the most important determinant of investment success is the cost.

DIY Financial Independence: Freedom Workbook
Put your money to work so you don’t have to.
Use your IRS-approved tax shelter—Pay 0% on asset gains.
Accumulate $250,000, $500,000 even $1,000,000 tax-FREE. You achieve Financial Independence by having enough money to do what you want. When you don't have to rely on work to survive, you are financially independent. Playing it safe won't achieve it. You don't have to be super wealthy to become free of money worries. Financially independent people have one thing in common: they put their money to work so they don't have to. If you don't put your money to work, you will never be free.   'Compound interest' is the name of the process by which money makes money. You don't need to do a thing besides sending $250 to work every month. You earn money every time you buy things. You own part of the businesses. Compounding is what Warren Buffett counts on for success.
“My wealth has come from a combination of living in America, some lucky genes, and
compound interest.”
How much can your money earn for you? It depends on how long it works and where you put it to work. The best strategy is to use your Wealth Reserve to shield your money while it works in places you shop. You can use a special IRS-approved Tax-FREE account to avoid all tax on investment dividends, earnings and interest. You can also avoid the fees and commissions on this account. Your $250 a month investment may grow to $1,000,000 or more and it is all tax FREE. That $3,000 a year for 33 years ($99,000) compounds to $1 million if you put it to work: capitalism.

Women: Median Retirement Income Is 42% Lower Than For Men
An average working woman earns 21% less than an average working man. While a portion of this earnings gap is caused by different career and lifestyle choices between men and women, gender discrimination still sandbags women’s ability to earn an income and thrive during their working years. The gender earnings gap has implications for women as they age. For example, the average woman qualifies for Social Security benefits 23% lower than the average man. On average, women have life expectancies five years longer than men, requiring higher levels of retirement saving. The report’s authors also found that women face higher retirement health-care costs, needing an average of $140,000 by age 65 to have a 90% chance of covering their health care costs, versus $124,000 for men. Women have less income to accomplish higher retirement income needs than men. So women have a greater need to make their investment dollars grow faster than men. Warren Buffett recommends that we are more successful investors by being patient. Women are more successful investors because they are less likely to engage in rapid asset transactions. Buy and hold is often the best strategy.

What about cutting the 956 corp subsidies we pay?

What about cutting the 956 corp subsidies?

What about the subsidies to 956 profitable corporations?
Tax bill is not an ‘overhaul’ but a gift to rich. The 10% rate goes UP. The 39% rate goes down. More of us will end up in the next higher tax bracket because the bill shifts the income range of each rate. Old rate made taxes for incomes $$9,326 to $37,950 at 15% but new rate 12%, 25%, 35% makes income $9,326 to $37,950 pay 25%. If your income is over $418,000, you will pay less than 20%. Buffett, Romney, Kerry pay under 17%.
The average rate of the richest 400 Americans is just 20%. Taxing investment income at lower rate loses $1.3 trillion over 10 years. This is why you and I must pay more!
‘Overhaul’ means changing sources of revenue and tax “expenditures” known as subsidies and loopholes. We let hedge fund profits be taxed at lower rates because of special interest groups’ FREE gifts to Washington.  We give money to agribusiness to turn corn into gas. We give oil companies our money to produce gas too. We give our tax money to plane makers to sell overseas. Many corporations hide their money overseas so they avoid paying tax. We have been paying for the subsidies since 1980s. Trump says he has been waiting to give tax cuts for a long time. He paid ZERO taxes from 1995 on. Wealthy stand to collect windfall from Trump tax cuts like nothing in history. Tax cuts to corps like Koch Ind. used to buy elections and change policy issues.

Wealthy pay only 17% or less now—few pay 39% or even 35%
Wealthy don’t need the government’s taxes. Wealthy people usually take their income as stock dividends and capital gains from assets they own. Like Warren Buffett with $78 billion net worth, they give themselves $100,000 or so in wages. They pay themselves in other ways. They receive stocks and the right to buy stock at a lower price with no current income tax. For cash, they borrow from their assets or a company they own. Loans are not income plus the interest is deductible to the business. They receive benefits from their assets like Trump, who does not pay for his room and meals at his golf clubs, hotels, office or restaurants. They fly on their own planes and rides. When their lawyers do their taxes, they hide their incomes inside special legal entities. Their staffs are deductible. As Buffett admitted, “I pay 17.7%. The average for the office staff including receptionist was 33%. Romney and Kerry pay even less.

Canceling estate tax for millionaires raises debt for us
You and I will never pay the estate tax which starts at $11 million per couple. Trump wants his friends to avoid tax so their families can create a dynasty. Actually, with tax and estate planning they would never have to pay it. Only 1 of 700 families pays this tax and we could use the $ Billions collected to pay debt. We will have to make up the $ billions treasury will miss if his bill passes. No reason that family farms had to be sold for taxes. Don’t you wish you had to sell your $100 million assets to pay the estate tax?

Use Fact-based Investing not fantasy investing
You now have a choice: buy profitable company stocks at cost using the largest fund firm with licensed reps and FREE planning tools OR trust your salesman to give you hot tips.
Fact-based investing not fake facts from Wall Street marketing!
You pay no commissions or fees so you keep more of your money. If you are a long-term investor, you avoid giving up 63% of your potential accumulations because of charges.
First fact: John Bogle, founder of Vanguard Group, the largest mutual fund firm, found that over 50 years of the normal 2% fees on your portfolio, you can actually end up with 63% less than you could have earned. It is simple math: your money earns 7% but the advisor, firm and trading/timing take 2%. Instead of $1.4 million at $250 a month you end up with only $670,000. The average managed-account equity investor earned just 3.79% a year over 30 years ended 2014. Inflation was 2.7%. The market benchmark returned 11.06%. We can invest in a fund that tracks the benchmark at the low cost of 0.04% and so earn 11% over time. We can eliminate any current or future taxes on the growth of our money as it compounds in a tax-advantaged retirement account. No advisor or computer system has proven to beat the market returns over time. Use facts to grow your account: https://www.amazon.com/Fact-based-Investing-first-million-hardest/dp/1977574270

Cut taxes? Most large corporations pay no taxes already—No firm pays 35%
Trump and GOP want to cut taxes for corporations but most don’t pay taxes now. Many store their cash overseas so they can’t be taxed. We can’t do that legally! We must pay tax on all worldwide income and most of us don’t have a legal team (deductible) to avoid taxes with legal gimmicks. For instance, some like Google use the Dutch Sandwich to save $3.6 Billion in taxes. Others use the Double Irish to use foreign tax laws we can’t.
Some receive our tax money as subsidies even though they are profitable: Nike, Royal Dutch Shell, Fiat Chrysler, Ford, GM, Intel, Alcoa, Boeing. 75% of disclosed subsidy dollars have gone to 965 big companies. We don’t know the total value of subsidies to all business but it is in the $ billions. Corporations have the money to make jobs ALREADY we make jobs by consumers having money. GOP targets our deductions: we end up paying more taxes (10% rate raised to 12%) instead of corporations paying their fair share. GOP says they are NOT increasing our tax rates even though they are by changing the income brackets. The net effect is we will pay more. Business keeps its subsidies and loopholes and keeps 2.5 Trillion overseas. They send jobs overseas not make jobs here! GOP just pushed the deficit to 20 Trillion and tax cut for rich will cost 1.5 Trillion more!

Building assets not income
Trump’s tax overhaul is about shifting more of the tax burden to us. Big corporate subsidies will not be cut. Special interest will keep their loopholes. The wealthy are never going to cut their benefits from the IRS code. After all, their Congressmen put the code there for a reason: cut their own taxes. Duh. Are they really going to cut off their noses to help us? Their basic rule: Avoid taxes on taxable INCOME. They build ASSETS not income. Assets are not taxable until sold. Individual income is taxed. Usually we have no choice from W-2. We are not able to hide it overseas like Google, Apple and Facebook. Most large corps have $ Trillions sitting in offshore accounts so their revenue can’t be taxed. What can we do? To beat Wall Street, we must avoid the middle people.

VA chief not helping Vets with 10 day vacation paid by US
How would you like taxpayers to pay for your vacation to Europe? Vets still have to wait to get appointments for service but not the VA head. Shulkin got his vacation date as requested. We paid for the flights for Shulkin and his wife, Merle Bari, and provided a per-diem reimbursement for their meals and other expenses, VA said Friday. They wouldn’t say why Bari qualified for the reimbursements and taxpayer-funded airfare, other than to say she was traveling on “approved invitational orders” and had “temporary duty” travel expenses. We have to wait a year to get ONE vacation day.

What is your strategy for retirement withdrawals?
Your situation is unique so there are no rules about when and how much to withdrawal from your retirement accounts. First, determine where all the income may be coming from—old pensions, rollover IRAs, regular IRAs, Roth IRAs, savings, work, brokerage accounts. Second, get your SS benefit estimate at https://www.ssa.gov/retire/estimator.html. You need to plan whether taking your benefits at age 62 or 66 or 70 makes sense for you and your spouse. Visit your local office to decide the complexity. Third, plan for the IRS requirement to take your RMD at age 70.5. Use IRS worksheet to figure your ‘required’ amount: https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-tege/uniform_rmd_wksht.pdf. Basically, all your ‘deferred’ tax accounts are totaled and divided by your life expectancy. Each year, your trustee will calculate this amount. You must withdraw the RMD of all accounts or move all your money to one trustee so you have one number. Your plan can tell you how much to take each year to avoid IRS penalties. Consider taxes too. Where will you invest?

GOP cut health plan for 9 million poor children to spite Dems
Congress just allowed the Children’s Health Insurance Program, which provided low-cost health insurance to 9 million children, to expire. GOP would not bring renewal to vote so CHIP screening and immunizations will stop. Sick children will make others sick. CHIP was instrumental in lowering the percentage of children who were uninsured from nearly 14% to 4.5% in 2015. Amid unsuccessful efforts to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, the Republican-led Congress allowed the CHIP deadline to pass without action.
Trump and GOP must have a ‘win’ for the rich no matter what the cost!
GOP Rep claims health—life—is privilege for the few not a right as in “life, liberty, etc”

Best rides for the thrifty consumer
IF you need your vehicle to take you from here to there over and over again, you must use the CR report on the top 10. These are the most popular buys in America and most are made in America too. Ford provides the best and only pick up. Good design has made the difference between these 10 and those at the bottom of the reliability list at JD Power.

Medicare for All
GOP thinks health is a privilege for those who can afford it. Some attack Medicare since the tax we pay for it does not cover the whole cost. Some believe the individual must carry the cost otherwise people would not take care of themselves. Some consider that the government should not be responsible for individual health care because that is not its job. Others feel that the government is incompetent to run health care, like Amtrak—it is always in the red. However, when you consider that our taxes don’t cover all the weapons we make for war, that argument seems trivial. Our health care system has shown that individuals are responsible for their own health except when they can’t pay due to illness, unemployment, and other reasons out of their control. Medicare has been run to the delight of most seniors who use it. Medical special interest groups have kept Congress from fixing the cost overrun problem. We give more taxes for weapons than the generals can use and no Congress person is willing to fix the cost overruns. No one says we can’t afford to run up more debt for weapons. “I won’t let people die in the streets.” He will!
GOP doesn’t worry about the deficit except when it is used to pay for citizens’ needs.
Let’s get on with a solution that covers taxes and costs since we all need health.

We are paying Don's tax bills

We are paying the taxes that Don is avoiding
“I have friends that are very rich and never get audited. I’m audited every year. Maybe that’s because of politics, who knows.” He is audited every year because he has questionable deductions. The last taxes we saw, in 1984, showed he was a sole proprietor Sch C,  ‘consultant’ with NO income and $619,227 in expenses. ?? That’s very unusual. Just as he had no taxes paid in 1978 on $406,379 income and no taxes in 1979 on $3,443,560 income. His charitable deductions are suspect too. Every American would be audited under those circumstances. It is not political. Don might have needed to make his taxes look “normal” after he decided to run for Pres and Chief of the IRS. Real estate moguls often use the huge depreciation allowance of real estate accounting to defer taxes on the gain of their investments. Some rental RE owners show only deductions during the useful life of their properties.

What if your brokerage firm says ‘goodbye’?
Brokerage firms want more money, even though their operating margins are over 45%. They're telling their salespeople to bring in more multi-millionaires. No more small accounts. The ‘personal’ touch you used to get for $250,000 wasn’t much so now you will need to give them all your assets to get attention. $750,000 is the minimum now so the firm can take at least $15,000 a year. Actually, this is a good thing for you. You were on your way to giving up 63% of your total potential nest egg because fees compound. Brokers need more income because the smart money is moving to low-fee providers like Vanguard. Your brokerage firm’s CEO just can’t make it on 2% of $250,000 customers. Brokers are no longer paid for your business anyway.

Why is your employer cutting your 401k match?
Cost! First they cut company-paid pensions. Then they cut pensions. Now they cut matching for your 401k contributions. After years of trying to get employees to put in more toward retirement, your employer may be cutting back. You may even lose matching contributions. They don’t want to help you with retirement. We are on our own. If they don’t match, you can make your own pension and make it FREE of income taxes forever. Instead of paying tax when you retire, you can spend all your earnings. This may add 30% to your nest egg since you avoid federal and state income tax as well as tax on your Social Security benefits.
You may be ahead by using your own tax shelter: https://www.amazon.com/Tax-Shelter-Americans/dp/1500426520

And why your employer is cutting your health insurance
Cost! The percentage of employers with fewer than 100 workers that offer healthcare benefits to their employees has declined an average of 24%, reaching as high as 36% for companies with fewer than 10 employees. Meanwhile, health insurance offer rates among larger employers have been holding steady. Even though the ACA exempts employers with fewer than 50 employees from providing healthcare benefits, it created health exchanges for those employers to help their employees obtain healthcare. But exchanges, says EBRI study author Paul Fronstin, simply “haven’t taken off. Just because you create something doesn’t mean [employees] will use it.”

This is why you never got your check to fix Sandy damage
New York authorities charged a Long Island engineering firm and one of its former executives with forging damage reports for homes swamped by Hurricane Sandy, altering the documents in such a way that owners’ flood insurance claims were denied.
Matthew Pappalardo and his former employer GEB HiRise Engineering PC were named in a 50-count indictment accusing Pappalardo of directing his staff to remove descriptions of flood damage from least 25 reports that had been prepared by subcontractors who visited the properties. Lawyers say it was a widespread practice intended to benefit the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s flood insurance program and the private insurers that administered its policies following a storm that caused more than $75 billion in damage. FEMA, $24 billion in debt after 2005’s Hurricane Katrina and other storms, pressured insurers to hold the line on Sandy payments.

Wealthy political donors support America’s Socialism for the Rich
$44 billionaire warns fellow billionaires that we will likely degenerate into socialism or corporatism, as two-tiered societies typically do,” Charles Koch told attendees. Koch’s oil and gas firm worries he will loose the lucrative government subsidies he receives if Dems win elections. Other attendees wish to receive corporate welfare but do not wish to pay their fair share in taxes. Koch, headquartered in KS, has recently had the state eliminate the income tax for all businesses even though it expands operations in other states. Most large corporations obtain subsidies or tax breaks that are never discussed by their Washington ‘reps’. Many like Boeing receive huge state benefits also. Koch told his rich buddies that society must “look” like it is NOT rigged; people will get desperate.

If you need immediate income for life
There are two common ways to receive monthly income for life: mutual fund vs annuity. Annuity is guaranteed for life or life plus certain number of years. A male gets $603 per month for life in return for $100,000 at age 65. If you are in good health, you could have $238,680 by age 95 but you break even if you die in 12 years. You can take $500 and heirs can get something if you pass in under 20 years. Of course, $603 will be worth $300 in 20 years. Mutual Fund is tricky. You can take $600 a month from the principal and receive increases for inflation. You have a 54% probability that your money will carry you for 20 years. The annuity wins because ½ the people die before they get to use all of their deposit which is invested in bonds 50%, stocks 40%, cash 10%.

GOP’s no-tax experiment in KS was just defeated
Voters in KS have removed 11 very conservative reps who helped gov Brownback pass a law eliminating the income tax on Koch bros and other wealthy people. The voting occurred against the backdrop not only of the state's fiscal woes but ongoing legal and political disputes over funding for public schools. The state Supreme Court could rule by the end of the year on whether the Legislature is shorting schools on their state aid by hundreds of millions of dollars a year. Kansas has struggled to balance its budget since the GOP-dominated Legislature slashed personal income taxes in 2012 and 2013 at Brownback's urging to stimulate the economy. Koch and other businesses have NOT increased jobs and have taken their tax refunds OUT of the state. They buy business in other states and countries. No one wants to run a business where the schools fail.

Poor now allowed to save for emergency
Some states allow new ABLE account, which could help millions of disabled adults who worry about losing food stamps, cash benefits, or life-sustaining health insurance if they accumulate more than a couple thousand dollars. Three of the states let residents of any other state open an account. ABLE accounts are tax-free if they go toward disability-related expenses, a broad category that includes housing, education, health care, and basic needs. If you need Medicaid to live, you can’t keep money you earn and you can’t have income from a spouse. Florida’s program will be restricted to residents, the other three states – Ohio, Tennessee, and Nebraska – are open to people who don't live there. ABLE accounts may be available online. Family can give $14,000 a year so disabled can live more independently and don’t need a trust when parents die.

Which candidate is the better liar? Presidents must lie to keep power.
It is good to know that both parties act as juvenile petty-power cliques.
Big oil donors spending $ millions to keep GOP subsidies coming from Washington.

Can a bully be treated? Mental health is a factor in 2016
People who bully others may also benefit from therapy, though they may be reluctant to acknowledge their bullying behavior openly. In therapy, bullies may begin to understand the impact their hurtful behavior has on others, explore reasons for why they bully, learn new skills for communicating positively with others, and address personal experiences that may have contributed to their bullying behavior. Often bullies have unresolved personal wounds that contribute to their bullying behavior, and addressing these emotional wounds or identity and social issues with a qualified therapist can be an integral step towards stopping bullying behavior. The ultimate solution is to reverse the large-scale abandonment of our youth to the peer culture and, in every way we can, to rebuild children’s lost relationships with parents, teachers and the other adults. Bullies have trouble focusing on anything but their own self-worth. A 70-year-old man-child.

We will never see Don's tax returns since he pays nothing

Trump tax situation more mysterious: no taxes paid in 1984 1978-79
Trump appealed tax rulings in the 1990s. His 1984 federal income tax return included a Schedule C, the form used by sole proprietors to report revenue. Trump listed no income on that form, yet he deducted $626,264 as expenses. He claimed a consulting business. His accountant denies preparing his 1984 return even though his signature is clear on the form. There were no receipts or documentation for expenses including his hair, jets, golfing and food. The judge wrote, “The problem at issue is not one of double taxation, but of no taxation.” We don’t know if Don ever paid taxes. In 2016 he takes on more debt as property values rise.

What does Mike bring to Don’s party? Ann Coulter and I agree on 1 thing!
When Mike Pence was a young lawyer on the rise, he challenged a longtime Democratic congressman in a GOP-leaning district. And then, scandal. Campaign finance records from the 1990 effort showed that Pence, then 31, had been using political donations to pay the mortgage on his house, his personal credit card bill, groceries, golf tournament fees and car payments for his wife. It stunned voters — and undermined Pence’s strategy to portray the incumbent, Rep. Philip R. Sharp, as tainted by donations from special-interest political action committees. “It was a brazen act of hypocrisy,” opponents said. On 60 minutes Don said he ‘doesn’t care’.
Don must feel comfortable with Mike charging personal expenses to his work accounts, just like he does. Don promised NO outside group funding but now beholden to many. They pay his expenses to his firms. Don was for bank bailout and auto bailout. Whether they fund them or nationalize them, it doesn’t matter, but you have to keep the banks going.”

58 % of Americans are dissatisfied with their choices in the “election.” Corporations and wealthy donor class will pay over $6 billions to buy votes. Voters are split 50-50.
We CAN have democracy in this country, or we can have great wealth concentrated in the hands of a few, but we can't have both. Louis Brandeis Supreme Court justice (1916-1938)

How can the wealthy double their share of income since 1980?
The upper middle class expanded from 13% of the population in 1979 to 30% in 2014, the Urban Institute found. Together, the upper middle class and the wealthy had 30% of all income in 1979 and 63% in 2014. In the same period, the middle class’s share of income declined from 46 percent to 26 percent. Biggest factor: Education. Even with degree, low income grads earns less. Income gap is passed down from generation to generation through marriage/affinity. Is travel insurance right for you?
Despite terror events, “rates don’t fluctuate due to events,” Ms. Taft said. “Travel insurance rates are heavily regulated.” Policies are standardized so you can compare rates at consolidators like QuoteWright.com and Squaremouth.com or call an agent about which policy may best suit you. One agent said what determines whether you are covered is 1) when you bought coverage and 2) how exactly your travels were affected during a terrorist event. For instance, a road closure in the aftermath of an attack that causes you to miss your flight would likely be covered. On the other hand, if you cancel because of an event at your destination. “Traditionally insurance doesn’t cover fear,” the agent said. Use your judgment: you are more likely to die from a disease or lightning than from a terrorist attack. Millions travel without it.

Why do investors surge into stocks when the market hits new highs?
If you are a long term investor, why buy when stocks are making new highs? Wouldn’t it be better to buy when the stocks were on sale like in February so you would be up 16% by now? This is an example of why the Buffetts and Bogles tell us NOT to time the market. Wall Street “professionals” get excited about buying but their costs kill our earnings so now they sell indexes as stocks (ETF)s.  However, this can be a learning moment for us. If our advisor is telling us to buy stocks now, you could finally realize that advisors are sales people, not advisors. They want fees. (See p. 174 in https://docs.google.com/file/d/0ByXsRacEHnd5aTkyb2Z5eDMwT00/view)
It is not best for you to buy at news-cycle highs. An advisor with your best interests at heart is telling you to hold if you are a long term investor. Compounding only works if you reinvest dividends. Timing the market is for salesmen’s fees/commissions.

Where do you keep your cash? Home?
41% of millennials are keeping their “savings” at home, an Amex survey found, and more than half of “savers” have their cash squirreled away in a “secret” location. First, $100 hidden at home for emergencies makes sense. Second, ATMs are open 24/7. Third, Warren Buffett has said that the best place for your money is a low-cost stock index fund earning 10-12%. Obviously the survey is not talking “savings” since cash at home is NOT earning anything but negative consequences. If cash is sitting around it will get used or shrink (inflation) or lost NOT saved. Some banks or credit unions pay interest on checking. http://www.bankrate.com/finance/checking/high-yield-checking-a-good-bet-1.aspx

Where can you receive unbiased advice?
Any person who gives financial advice in your particular situation must be licensed. If they receive any compensation, they should tell you how and how much. You can’t judge the validity of information unless you know their biases. For instance, Warren Buffett has said that the best place for your money is a “low-cost stock index fund” earning 10-12%. If we are scared of losing money, the last place to find help is a salesman. Their job is to make money for their firm and themselves. Many studies have shown that advisors do worse than monkeys at stock picking and the advisor total costs of 2-3% can reduce your total earnings by 63%. You must pay for unbiased advice either by doing your research or paying someone a fee NOT tied to the outcome. The very wealthy have people on a fixed fee like a retained lawyer. You can pay $500 - $5,000 once for a fiduciary like the fee-only advisors at https://www.napfa.org/. Since you’re going to need unbiased advice for the rest of your life, it makes sense to learn how to handle your money yourself. Why give it to Fidelity, Morgan, Citi, or Schwab whose profit margin is 39%! Wow 39%!

GOP religion bill makes discrimination legal
Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, thinks the "First Amendment Defense Act" will protect the rights of religious institutions since same-sex marriage legalized. Pro: Religious institutions could NOT lose tax-exempt status if they oppose same-sex people. Con: It legalizes discrimination against gays, lesbians and transgender individuals. It would prohibit the feds from taking any action against any person who, "acts in accordance with a religious belief or moral conviction that marriage is or should be recognized as the union of one man and one woman, or that sexual relations are properly reserved to such a marriage." Means NO SEX outside marriage despite GOP convention cheers for PayPal!
Feds could do nothing if people discriminate against others. It couldn’t revoke the tax-exempt status of nonprofit institutions such as religious schools or colleges run by such individuals; disallowing federal tax deductions for contributions made to such organizations; or denying anyone a federal contract, grant, loan, license or other benefit simply because that person, or an institution run by that person, discriminates against certain people for sex, race, creed, color, etc.
So feds could NOT sanction person that discriminates against people they think are gay or have sex with non-spouses—basically anyone that person/institution doesn’t like.
CURRENT LAW: 1964 civil rights act said you can’t discriminate against people you don’t like “based on race, gender, religion or national origin.”

Impossible now possible
Scientists have created a hologram of a solitary particle of light. Impossible they all thought. It was impossible because photons act as a wave and a particle at the same time. Using two other photons which create interference, the structure of another appears. Eventually they hope to make things on the quantum level—‘universe in a marble’—level. Quantum action can happen faster than light travels: Einstein said “spooky.”
