Pay off mortgage?

When to pay off your mortgage?
Unless you have a mortgage that can be paid off within 6 months, you have to consider your overall financial situation, age and resources to make this decision. Here are some of the guidelines.
1. For some in or near retirement, it would take their investment portfolio and retirement money to pay off their mortgage. If they spent it to pay off the mortgage, they would NOT have as large a portfolio to grow or provide income. Since some folks are earning about 9% on their money, they would give up adding to their nest egg. For instance, if you had $1/2 million in your stock/bond accounts like Vanguard's Wellesley Income Fund, you would be adding about $45,000 to your pile each year on average. If you used $200,000 to pay off the mortgage you would be adding only $27,000 a year. If the market went to 3%, you would add only 9,000. In that case, paying a 3-4% mortgage off may be the smarter move since you are earning less than the mortgage rate.
2. If you have a tax situation that allows you to take mortgage interest off your taxes, you would lose that every year if you paid off the mortgage. Some pay less tax with the mortgage interest deduction every year.
3. If you want to maintain a good credit rating, paying the mortgage every month like clockwork helps the rating go up. There is no benefit financially to paying it off except the peace of mind that you don't owe anyone. Some folks have the dough and can pay the mortgage off anytime if needed. In fact some have a home equity line in case of emergencies. They don't like keeping cash earning just 1-2% in a bank.
4. Some would rather have the investment earnings now since they will probably live a long time and don't want to take a reverse mortgage if medical expenses hit later on. They want to keep assets growing. These are the folks who would never give an insurer a lump sum in order to receive a fixed income for life. Inflation cuts the buying power in half in 20 years and they expect to need more income not less in 20 years.

Give your child a leg up: If you start them investing early
How much does it cost to assure your child of a $1 million nest egg? It costs only $16,000 if you start their investment account early. Use Warren Buffett’s strategy.
Warren Buffett recommends we need only one account to grow a retirement fund. He beat 5 hedge fund strategies with this one fund. Unfortunately, the investment industry does not let our schools teach high schoolers the Buffett Strategy: One Fund; $200 a month, 8 years; buy and hold. It is called the Miracle of Compounding. If you use a tax-FREE account, the amount is not taxed—now or later. I learned from John Bogle that you give up 63% of your total potential nest egg if you pay someone 2% a year to ‘handle’ your money. Handlers only beat the market over short periods, not over time.
Warren Buffett’s advice: https://www.amazon.com/Give-your-child-leg-manage/dp/1096505355/’

Put your money to work so you don’t have to.
Accumulate $250,000, $500,000 even $1,000,000.
Compounding is what Warren Buffett counts on for success.
“My wealth has come from a combination of living in America, some lucky genes, and
compound interest.”
How much can your money earn for you? $1 million from your $99,000 investment.
Your $250 a month investment may grow to $1,000,000 or more and it can be tax FREE. That $3,000 a year for 33 years ($99,000) compounds to $1 million if you put it to work: Low-cost stock index fund earns 11% per year after fees over time. Advisor-managed funds earn 3.79% over time. Compounding does not work as well if your advisor is trading, market-timing, rebalancing or rotating sectors.

Is your advisor a ‘hybrid’ or RIA or dually registered BD?
It may not matter to you how your advisor is operating but you will when you have a dispute. How you pay your advisor may be determined by the products they and their employer are legally allowed to sell. You may pay a monthly fee, a commission or a combination of those. A dually registered advisor is a registered representative with a broker dealer (licensed with series 7 (stock/bond/packaged products)) who also has a series 65 license (gives planning advice). Series 65 is also known as an investment advisor representative and leverages the broker dealers corporate Registered Investment Advisor (RIA governed by the SEC). A hybrid advisor has a series 7 and has their own RIA registered with the SEC or state regulator. RIA assets are held at a custodial firm. Your advisor could act on their own (discretionary) or need your permission to buy and sell each item. You give away control of your assets in a discretionary account and you usually pay a fee on all assets. This may stop churning your assets. But do they act as a legal fiduciary—give you the best deal possible? It is hard to know without research.

Trump Tax Shelter avoids taxes

Trump promised to save Medicare for working Americans
As a candidate, Trump repeatedly said he would never cut Medicare, Medicaid or Social Security. Now he wants to cut Medicare by $554 billion and Medicaid by $250 billion. He will send Medicaid money to states to eliminate coverage for citizens they don’t like. He will cut the subsidies to millions who use the marketplace to buy insurance. His budget cuts funding for the National Dislocated Worker Grants – which provides support to those who lose their jobs because of factory closures or natural disasters and the Adult Employment and Training Activities initiative, which serves high school dropouts and veterans. Trump wants to cut $214 billion from the food stamp SNAP program in the next decade, a reduction of nearly 30%. He is reducing Section 8 federal housing subsidies by more than $1 billion, zeroing out community development block grants and eliminating a $1.9 billion fund to cover public housing capital repairs—no new boilers. 29 programs that aid poor children in education will be cut. Trump selling our airports, our lands.
There will be No cuts to subsidies for oil, gas, coal, agribusiness, drug firms, or arms manufacturers. War machine gets more than it asked for from Trump. Plus parades.

Trump’s attitude about both sides of the story
Trump suppresses the other side of the FBI story. Now he won’t release the other side’s view of the process of FBI surveillance of known Putin agent “advisor to the Kremlin” Carter Page. The irony is he wants sexual predators to receive ‘due process’—let’s hear the other side. However, he is not willing to let us read the Dems’ memo about the FBI.
The Don complains that wife beaters and sexual harassers like him do not get due process—we don’t hear why they beat and harass women since we don’t have assault trials. He favors hiring and praising wife beaters with tacit approval of the GOP religionists. He seems to believe that if a predator like Judge Moore claims an ‘absolute denial’ that that proves he was not a child molester. Does this not leave many Trump voters with more concerns about his ‘grabbing’ habits and paying prostitutes $137,000 for sex and twisting the ‘fake facts’ to his benefit? Lies about Tower wiretap.
Is there anything that gives ‘conservative’American’s pause? Not sexual assault, not prostitution, or not one-sided propaganda? Power corrupts absolutely.
Why can’t we hear from both sides for truth’s sake?

GOP gives military-industrial complex $700 billion more
Americans vote for the conservatives because they promise to not spend lavishly. It seems the GOP has changed to the spending party. Senate leaders have reached a two-year deal that would set defense spending at $700 billion for 2018 and $716 billion for 2019. “I’d rather we didn’t have to do as much on non-defense, but this is an absolute necessity, that we’ve got these numbers,” said the Senate Armed Services Committee’s Jim Inhofe. Ryan has pushed for cuts in Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security in order to fund the increases but Dems resisted the cuts. Kentucky Republican Rand Paul cried about debt on Thursday after voting for the massive debt increases for his tax breaks earlier. GOP likes to borrow to pay their donors and then cut programs that benefit working Americans. The rich get permanent relief from future taxes while our tax rate reductions expire in 2026. GOP increases--not decreases--debt.

Best last minute tax saving move
Tax filing began Jan 29 even though all the forms are late in arriving. If you find you owe tax instead of hitting the refund button this year, you may still be able to claim your refund. You can reduce your 2017 income and receive a tax credit. Credits reduce your taxes dollar for dollar. In effect, Uncle Sam can help you reduce taxes AND save for retirement at the same time. On line 32, Form 1040 or line 17, Form 1040a, you can enter up to $5,500 ($6,500 over age 50) as IRA contribution to reduce your income. If you meet the qualification, a credit will show up on Line 51, Form 1040 or Line 34, 1040a. You subtract this credit from your tax. EG: Income $66,000: tax refund is $3,335, without IRA contribution. With the contribution, the refund is $4,392 or $5,553 if you both make the contribution. Credit against tax is $400. IRS checks to see you have IRA.

Trump giving investment advisors another break
Trump’s SEC will not fine or censure your advisor for hiding the 12b-1 fees that mutual funds charge every year to pay for marketing funds to other people. They should be disclosed before you buy. Trump has given advisors a pass if they ‘self-report’ by June 2018. Advisors need to tell you that the class of shares they sold you benefits their firm and themselves and that there are cheaper shares available. In the past several years, the SEC has brought cases against nine firms over failure to disclose conflicts around the receipt of 12b-1 fees. Trump is removing safeguards in every agency. Manipulation by WS firms is rampant. Since no one sees the disclosures in the prospectus, you may not know that your advisor fees can take up to 63% of your possible accumulations.

IRS free filing sites avoid $300+ cost of filing taxes
Commercial tax prep sites offer expensive loans as advances on your refund but you can keep your whole refund using the IRS free filing partners. Refunds can be in your account within 2-3 weeks. The average refund is over $3,000. Check your refund: https://sa.www4.irs.gov/irfof/lang/en/irfofgetstatus.jsp
You can create a tax-free retirement fund of $500,000 with that amount each year. If you need free tax preparer service for your 1040, use AARP Tax Aides near you. Bring last year’s return and ID: https://www.aarp.org/money/taxes/aarp_taxaide/
Use your refund to fund your tax-FREE IRS approved account: https://www.amazon.com/Tax-FREE-Retirement-code-lifetime-income/dp/1475206976

Why luxury cars are NOT selling
Why are sales of Mercedes, Porsche, Lexus, etc falling like a stone? Well-to-do buyers want something different. They want 707 horsepower, 10 speed luxury rides. What? Yes, if you can drop $80,000+ at a local lot, you want something to impress. BIG trucks are the thing. GM, Ford and Jeep are making more money. You can control 7 different road surfaces, use big chrome wheels, a power tailgate, cameras on four corners and an adaptive cruise control system like Audi’s. The seats are nice too.

Take your tax break now

Trump tax breaks: for bling-bling; not jobs
Can you believe that the wealthy waste $110 million for this instead of creating new jobs and new businesses? This is what Trump’s tax credit class does with tax cuts that we have to pay for. (Who else makes up the loss in revenue?) Looks like wall graffiti in Brooklyn? Wealthy people buy toys and art that do NOT create jobs. Jobs are created when the middle class has money to spend. But their income has not increased above inflation since 1974. Rich people don’t wake up one day and think they can put their extra tax break money into a new factory. Why would they pay $20 an hour for labor when they can pay $1 an hour? Even ‘Make America Great’ Ivanka does not make her clothes line here in the US. Wealthy people and their advisors buy yachts. Advisors’ customers don’t buy yachts. Keep your Wall Street advisor fees. Create your own tax break.

Trump could be a great president
He could end ever-increasing health care costs by using his “negotiating” skills. He could end the Bush II ban on negotiating drug prices. He could follow the VA contract for Medicare and ACA. He could negotiate a fair price for common procedures and treatment so everyone would know how much broken bones, colonoscopy and epipens cost in every state. He promised on the campaign to reduce obscene costs. Americans will have “great health care at a fraction of the cost.” Bring down drug prices by importing cheaper medications from overseas and allowing Medicare to negotiate drug prices. Require price transparency from health-care providers so patients can shop for the best prices. “You will be able to choose your own doctor again.”
Trump could be a great president but his Xorders and agency appointments are being shaped by lobbyists from religious right, NRA, health insurance, oil and gas, IT. He has put the oil drillers shill at the EPA, private school advocate at Education, TX dancer at Energy, bank money launderer at Commerce, and movie producer at Treasury. He has cut investor and worker protection regs to allow abuse of consumers again. He is turning America into a Tammany Hall-style political business supporting his brand.

Is the new border tax right for you?
Congress should reject a proposed $1 trillion border adjustment tax (BAT) that would drive up prices for us and cost us jobs. This is the plea of retailers. They say: the Ryan-Brady plan would transition the United States from its long-standing income tax system toward a consumption tax system. The plan includes a 20% border adjustment tax on imports including auto parts that go in new cars and every car that is maintained. My 98 Subaru window control was just replaced and it came from Mexico. It cost over $100 new. It would cost $120 if leader Ryan’s new tax were in effect. Higher costs may mean fewer purchases and thus fewer Americans working. Tax increases should NOT be focused on those who spend almost all our income on products that are needed. It should focused on those who buy bling-bling. They have the money to spare, not us.

Trump to cancel school services so we can pay for rich kids in private schools
Mental health services. Civics and arts programs. International education and language studies. Anti-bullying activities. Gifted and talented initiatives. Full-service community schools. Check if your child’s assistance program is on the list of cuts. Most are aimed at students from low-income families and students with disabilities. Even Russian commented on the cruelty of the cuts. Justification for cuts is that it ‘duplicates activities that may be supported with other Federal, State, local, and private funds.’ Education funding is a local mix of programs that may not happen in poorer communities. Billionaire DeVos has never worked nor sent kids to public schools so these cuts could be chosen capriciously. She advocates private religious education and wants the public to pay for it. Trump has proposed redirecting $20 billion in federal spending toward a grant program for states to expand vouchers and charter schools. NC GOP is in sync with Trump’s plan: N.C. Senate cut education funding — but only in Democratic districts. AZ hires teachers without training or certificate for public schools so GOP can send kids to private or religious schools. KS tried the Trump cuts plan and is almost bankrupt now.

Is your advisor right on retirement income?
Is your advisor giving you 1990s advice still? Things have changed since the 4% rule worked 25 years ago. First, you are less likely to remain a couple. Second, your nest egg may not be earning what it could have then. Third, you may live longer—45% chance to live to be over age 90 if you are 71. Fourth, 1-year interest rates are now 1.4% not 8.75%. Fifth, what did the Monte Carlo analysis determine? Sixth, are all your future liabilities fundable in the correct sequence? Seventh, is your Spending Plan in place? Eighth, is your investing sustainable? Ask your advisor to check your income stream with this guide. Remember, your advisor is paid to serve the firm NOT you -- only Fiduciary does.

GOP tries and fails to create segregated voting again
White NC racists engaged in an ‘unconstitutional racial gerrymander’ according to the Supremes. "The Constitution entrusts states with the job of designing congressional districts," Justice Elena Kagan wrote for the majority. "But it also imposes an important constraint: A state may not use race as the predominant factor in drawing district lines." Gorsuch did not hear the case or the vote may have been different. Voters in seven states — Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, New Jersey and Washington — have turned to independent commissions in an effort to reduce political "gerrymandering," the map-drawing method that leads to districts easily won by Democrats or Republicans.
Will Trump stop Dems from voting with special rules from myth of voter fraud? There have been 492 cases of mostly local elections by absentee ballot from 2000 to 2017. 492 of 480 million ballots. Typical: Olivia Lee Reynolds was convicted of 24 counts of voter fraud. While working on the 2013 campaign for her boyfriend, she filled out absentee ballots for voters. Trump’s ‘proof’: people are registered in two states. Not illegal. Jared, Sean, Steve, and Tiffany are a few of your own team. Don, not illegal to be registered.

Credit Unions for your emergency funds?
Checking accounts are NOT usually the place to hold your funds for short-term savings but we found another exception: 1.75%. Need cash; write a check or ATM. Need a loan; pay 1% less. Anyone can join.

Will GOP take your coverage away with TrumpCare?
Will you be in the 23 million Americans that lose coverage under AHCA? It cuts more than $1 trillion from the assistance the government gives low- and moderate-income Americans, primarily through Medicaid. That means those in their 50-60s would see 850% increase. In some states, you couldn’t buy ANY policy. The bill also restructures the system of insurance marketplaces created by Obamacare to guarantee health coverage to Americans, even if they are sick. Before the 10 essential benefits, insurers could charge smaller premiums but then limit or deny you coverage when you got sick or ended up in the hospital. Millions of us fell into debt or bankruptcy from medical bills. GOP could cover everyone as a birth right as in "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness" which America promised were “inherent & inalienable” rights. Instead, the GOP will use the money from your health care to buy Trump an aircraft carrier and other military toys. But terrorists don’t have ships or planes. If you live in a GOP state, your premiums may go down but your policy will not cover you for much. And what if you are in an accident you may get well but in bankruptcy.
Remember, Congressmen who voted TrumpCare for us will keep their ObamaCare coverage because it is better coverage.
Why should we accept less than they receive for free?

30 cars Consumer Reports says are “never buy”
You can buy any car that meets your fancy and people do. Savvy shoppers know in advance what they are getting themselves in for. Overpaying for a car may be our second biggest financial mistake. How much does the ego boost or peer envy cost? They are all here from Fiat to Tesla. You do NOT get what you pay for in vehicles or in financial products. You have to understand what you buy and the seller is the least qualified to help you do that.

Avoid taxes in retirement

Avoid taxes in retirement: Give yourself the tax-FREE income you want
Advisors are wrong—we don’t need 80% of salary in retirement. A recent survey indicates that today's retirees are bringing in far less than that -- about 66% of their pre-retirement income on average. The average retired couple in this survey, before taxes, brought in $58,000 per year. Most of that money is coming from Social Security 43%, then traditional pensions 19%.

Workers will work long past age 65

This leaves less opportunity for young people. Make every dollar count.

Where do you invest now that Bill Gross’s run as bond guru is over? Wellesley Income fund has provided 10% return since 1970 with 60% bonds. Low cost (0.18%) is the key to long-term success. Gross charged 0.85% to 1.60% and so he had a hard time in this low interest rate world. Gross provided only 12% total return since 2000 where Wellesley gave you 22% vs DOW 56%. GOP crazies
In one of the weirdest and most Floridian moments in debate history, Wednesday night's gubernatorial debate was delayed because Republican governor Rick Scott refused to take the stage with Democratic challenger Charlie Crist and his small electric fan. Crist is running as Dem after swearing off GOP after the right criticized his leadership.

Should you take the life-long pension or the lump sum from work?
This is the question many have to face as they retire. If you can’t afford to hire a planner to do the numbers for you, consider that a pension usually pays you a fixed amount until you die. If longevity is in your family, this is a plus, just like good health and your fear of the market if you self-invested. If you have other sources of income and hate to budget and like steady income, take it. If you like to control your future and create a greater retirement income, read Ian Sender’s new book: http://www.amazon.com/Lets-Do-Numbers-Creating-Retirement/dp/1502775522

Employers “Guaranteed” benefits are B.S.—don’t count on them!
Some cities and counties are taking away benefits that they had long promised workers. This has angered many retirees, and an advocacy group, ProtectOurSeniors.org, has supported a bill introduced this year in Congress that would prevent companies—public and private—from taking away earned health-care benefits. The bill would also require companies that filed for bankruptcy to pay retiree pensions for at least three years.
“Post-retirement health benefits are not entitlements, they are earned benefits that were paid for by workers and guaranteed by employers,” one advocate said.
Shifting retirees onto the exchanges means more sick people—higher costs.
“Guaranteed” benefits are no longer guaranteed. Wealth is the only guaranteed system: http://www.amazon.com/Create-Your-Tax-FREE-Financial-System/dp/1466367466

What is a “robo-advisor” and do you need one?
Wall Street’s quest for more revenue takes a twist—in order to keep profits high, they are going electronic. Your broker/advisor can now offer to do what you could do all along—use low-cost index funds at a low-cost trading website. Of course, you will still pay through the nose for this “professional” service but now it’s done by staff. Your advisor will have more time to “gather more assets” instead of processing your paperwork. The “Robo-advisor” will manage “low-cost portfolios of ETFs, “smart” rebalancing, automated tax-loss harvesting, automatic money transfers and automated dividend re-investment.” Here is the reason you are being handed off: “the platform allows advisors to scale their business, automate workflows, develop new client relationships and provide clients with a modern digital and mobile experience. An advisor dashboard allows advisors to view all relevant data at the firm level (assets under management, clients, business metrics) and at the client level (balances, allocations, performance and so on).”
Robos are also provide “paperless forms and client agreements; Web and mobile apps; bank-level security; billing software and fee collection; the generation of statements and reports; and technical support seven days a week. All client-facing materials -- including the Web site, mobile apps, client statements and e-mails -- are branded with your advisor logo.” Great for advisor—no need to call just use app!
Since your broker/advisor is going robo, you might want to go really low-cost: http://www.amazon.com/Wealth-Without-Wall-Street-Commissions/dp/1442168137

SCAMS           Why are we still paying $700 Billion a year for WWII deployments?
We are paying for 164,253 of our active-duty armed personnel to be in 150 countries around the world. We have about 50,000 in Japan and 50,000 in Germany.
Are we preparing for WWII again? There are 1,208,083[1] armed personnel in the United States. Our taxes pay for about HALF of the WORLD’s military expenditures every year. We have wasted $398.6 billion so far on the F-35 program—they can’t fly safely.
We just can’t afford to pay for everyone else’s defenses anymore.
Japan, Germany and S. Korea can pay for their own defenses.

Shame the Iraq army?
A Kurdish woman fighter is leading the battle against Islamic State jihadists in the Syrian battleground town of Kobane, a monitoring group and activists said Sunday. "Those who know her say she is cultivated, intelligent and phlegmatic," said Mustefa Ebdi, a Kurdish activist from Kobane. "She cares for the mental state of the fighters and takes interest in their problems," he said.

Army lied to soldiers about chemical weapons exposure
American troops were exposed to chemical weapons multiple times in the years following the 2003 invasion of Iraq, while the Pentagon kept their discoveries of the expired or degraded weapons secret from investigators, fellow soldiers, and military doctors, according to a published report. On at least six occasions, soldiers were wounded by those weapons. In all, the NY Times reported that 17 U.S. soldiers and seven Iraqi police officers were exposed to chemical agents during the war. The U.S. government said its number was slightly higher, but did not release a specific figure.
The Army, further, reportedly admitted to The Times that it had not followed its guidelines for treating soldiers exposed to chemical weapons in the years following the invasion.
In one case, a wounded soldier who suffered burns and blisters due to mustard gas was presented with a Purple Heart by former Secretary of the Army Peter Geren. Weeks later, he was told that he had been denied the medal because the Army had determined that his wounds had not been suffered in enemy action.
