Retirement fund catch up strategy with same dollars

Retirement fund catch up strategy with same dollars
If you feel you need to catch up with your retirement fund you are not alone. Thousands have had their accumulations stopped by the virus pandemic. Some were laid off and some had their employer 401k match stopped. With a new investment option, you can restore your retirement fund goals—and you can do it with the same contribution dollar amounts. Whether you are saving in a 401k, IRA or Roth IRA or other pension plan, the key to meeting your long-term goals with the same level of portfolio risk is cost. First, find out what you had been paying for your investment options. For example, if you were paying total commission, annual expenses and 12b-1 fees of 1%, you will end up with $80,000 less than you would if you paid HALF that amount annually. Most investors have investment options that cost less and produce the same annual returns over time. By using the less costly version, you can reach your planned end number even though you have lost some time investing. If you keep giving away that extra 0.5% to your current fund provider, you will need to add an extra $1,400 a year to reach your total target accumulation. Switch to the best low-cost funds available.

Is “modified value investing” right for you?
Expensive advisors at Bank of America claim their “quality plus value” approach would have led to continued outperformance after the financial crisis. Value investing has been lagging the growth style for some time. Value investing is usually means stocks that appear to be trading for less than their intrinsic or book value. Value investors actively ferret out stocks they think the stock market is underestimating. Growth investors tend to favor small, young companies poised to expand, expecting to profit by a rise in their stock prices BofA said its “quality meets value” stock screen turned up names like Intel, Verizon, Coca-Cola and UPS. But BofA is really talking about ‘blue chip’ stocks. The four examples given above are not trading at “less than their intrinsic value.” They are in most consumer and pension portfolios. Since Warren Buffett is known as a value investor, his recommendation for most investors is to stick with the low-cost index and keep the high-cost stock pickers’ fees. Plus you own these stocks via the index.

We each pay $10,739 for health care so rich have the best
We spend DOUBLE what other countries spend but we get sick and die earlier. All the spending goes to care for the wealthy. There is no basic care for each of us. Even the middle class earning over $100,000 a year will be unable to afford care if they lose their job. This so-called “Free-market” system is a means of subsidizing the wealthy and owners of the hospitals, drug firms and insurance firms that lobby our Reps to keep the windfall growing. Our life expectancy—one measure of poor healthcare—has been falling since the ‘90s while other developed countries has been rising. In 2017, the Swiss lived 5.1 years longer than Americans but spent 30% less per person, for instance. We spend more than any other country for care but we get less. We don’t negotiate drug or procedure prices unlike almost every other industry. That is not capitalism, that’s socialism for the rich. Compare what is happening in the financial sector—lower commissions, more access to info, more service choices, lower costs overall. If you have a serious illness, your hospital, doctor and drug bills are full of overcharges that bankrupt most people even when they have great insurance. A ‘free’ virus test can cost $2,121.

Was your advisor advising you during this volatile period?
One-third of investors said their professional was nowhere to be found during the pandemic, according to a new study by J.D. Power. Since most folks who pay advisor fees say they pay so they have someone to discuss their situation with, it seems their advisor is getting paid for no work. Since fees can rob us of up to 63% of our total possible accumulations, it does not seem fair to give up so much for so little. Advisors are not going to know what to do in this market since we have never faced a soaring market with 50 millions out of work. Advisors give out common sense and call it “professional” service. Paying a 1% fee every quarter does not seem terrible until we look at our returns. If we earn 3% total return and we pay 1%, we are not being served well. Is your advisor a trustworthy resource in times of trouble or just an expense? There are alternatives. This is the time to make the change since earnings will be low for the foreseeable future. Unless your advisor cuts costs, you lose.

Tax return due July 15: Extension automatic with form
If you could not meet with your preparer and can’t complete the online tax return using one of the FREE software programs, you can obtain an extension to October 15 just by filing a form with an estimate of what you owe. IRS wants the money—the return can wait—since they have 3 years to find any errors. Fill and print and pay form:  https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4868.pdf  Paper return refunds delayed again. No folks.
If you cannot pay now, sign a payment plan so you pay over time. Since millions are out of work, this is expected to be big solution. It is unclear what your interest rate will be.

Holding a stock and bond index: pros & cons

Holding a stock and bond index: pros & cons
In times of unknowns and unknowables, trust the common basket of securities to see you through. Hey, you never know what will happen so your low-cost index funds will provide the ONLY sure thing: low costs beat high costs in every survey and period. Remember, with a broad index fund like the Vanguard Total Stock and Total Bond, you own a bit of everything—Apple, Amazon, new drugs, new tech, toilet paper, etc. All your costs and expenses can rob you of 63% of your total accumulations. In times of trouble, it is best to stay with the group. Yes, the leader or scout may be the hero but often they just fall by the side. Unless you have insider information like those in Congress, you should follow Warren Buffett’s advice.

How 5 one-liners offered by financial advisors work
There are tricks of the trade by financial sales people who need to keep selling without you knowing you are being sold. There are no actual get-rich-quick advisors out there. Sales people are natural confidence people because without your confidence in them, they would go hungry. There is an art to getting you involved so they can build confidence. The goal is to create a congregation of followers much like a mega-church. Think of Madoff’s Ponzi followers. They sought his financial ‘genius’ con thru his followers. To get you on board, sellers use soft sell: “if things change, call me.” Low teaser rate: “3% interest” gets attention. The “unbiased problem-solver.” The stock market “problem fixer.” The “self-helper” similar situation. No sales person can survive by waiting in the shop for buyers to buy. Sellers must evangelize to build a congregation so they can receive your ‘gifts’ quarter after quarter.

Does ‘free’ trading platform really help you?
For those seeking high rewards from fast trading of securities—gambling—broker-dealers have opened the gates to ‘free’ trades. Because people, usually young men, believe they are “masters of the universe,” B-Ds now have blood on their hands. Alexander Kearns, 20, killed himself after his Robinhood account showed a negative balance of more than $700,000. He used ‘borrowed’ money on options trading. Robinhood reacted by claiming they will now change how money is ‘displayed.’ They will NOT be guiding young users. They want to “innovate, lead, and go beyond the status quo.” Meaning: “where everything is seen as one big casino.” Action, whether vid games or online trading or online casino betting, is now entrepreneur heaven. There is no reason to learn a trade or play amateur sports, when the action is inside your wallet. There can be electronic cautions built into every ‘blood’ sport before your family learns the hard way.

Taxes in retirement: a necessary evil?
The virus has made some reconsider retirement now or later. Some will not be back to work since work needs fewer people—at least for a while. Others know now that they need to work a few more years since the virus has disrupted their plans. Perhaps the virus struck hard in your family and a big change is necessary. Most people are not better off as a result of the Trump tax changes. And now with the $3-4 Trillion spending increase, we all have to consider that taxes must go up. Wealthy folks have already found ways to pay less and have found ways to move their income overseas. Most working people have not seen an increase in inflation-adjusted wages for decades. There is greater concern for taxes now than before the virus recession. Luckily we don’t need offshore tax shelters or high-cost accountants to shield our future income from taxes.

Why costs matter
When your favorite securities are yielding record lows, costs—trading and annual fees—can kill your investment portfolio. Thus Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO) pulled in more than $16 billion in the first six months to push its asset base above $140 billion. Some of the new money likely stemmed from outflows from SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY). SPY had $21 billion of redemptions, as investors sought a cheaper alternative to SPY’s 0.09% expense ratio. VOO’s 0.03% expense ratio generates more interest from cost-conscious retail investors for asset allocation purposes, while the high liquidity that stems from SPY’s daily volume of approximately 100 million shares appeals to institutional investors. Low-cost bond index funds had inflows too. If the yield on your intermediate-term bond fund is 1.73% and you are paying 0.70%, you net less than if paying 0.20%. 40% of your earnings are going to your advisor. Over time, that cuts your total income in half due to the “the tyranny of compounding costs.” For fixed income investors, costs matter more than equities since historically, equities provide inflation-beating returns. Unfortunately, 70% of savers are not aware that they were paying any fees at all.

How to get your retirement fund back on track

How to get your retirement fund back on track
For those of us who have jobs, the most important fact is that no one knows what will happen with our investments. Forget trying to time the market or taking anyone’s advice about the next big thing. We are not going to refill our retirement fund quickly. This event will have HUGE unforeseen consequences. Instead of putting our faith in one person—broker, advisor, neighbor or newsletter—we must hold fast to the market growth over time. The market is down 8% so far this year. A balanced fund is down 2%. Since there is no silver bullet, patience must be our watchword. If you are waiting for your job to return, resist the impulse to raid your 401k or other retirement fund: You give up all your future compounded earnings. Exhaust all the other alternatives first: cut expenses, claim refunds on ongoing contracts, sell what you can, ask for help from employer, landlord, creditor, etc. Last crisis, we lived on credit cards instead of touching our retirement fund. Cash-out your old savings bonds. They probably aren’t earning interest anymore. Loans on cash value life insurance are more expensive than using it for loan collateral. Sell one of two cars. Use your ‘Go to Hell’ fund.

Conservatives want Free-market capitalism
TV star Glenn Beck says conservatives want free markets but do they really? Beck would not be able to right off his expenses as deductions thus lowering his taxes. He would not be able to obtain subsidies for his operations—subsidies we tax payers have to pay for. Free markets praised by conservatives brought us dirty water, air and violence. Richard Nixon had to create the EPA to control them. When companies are free to pollute, they do, move on and then our taxes have to clean the pollution. When companies are free to manufacture unregulated/tested products they kill us. GM killed over 100 because of a $2 faulty ignition; Purdue killed thousands with addictive opioid; NRA promoted guns as mainstays for manhood so America’s unarmed deaths by gunshot soared. Beck makes up stories to satisfy those Americans who feel left behind, left out and left alone. His theme that socialism is a costly and dangerous failure that leaves desperation, poverty, and bodies in its wake is exactly what we have in American’s poverty life. In our capitalist system, the poor are hungry, alienated, and without health care. The rich move their money overseas so they don’t have to pay their fair share of taxes. Check the list of subsidies that we taxpayers have to give large corporations so they can have more money. Even the private jets get paid for by us. America has socialism—socialism for the rich.

Scared people buy annuities: which is right for you?
Indexed annuities sales grew by 44% over the first quarter of 2019. Indexed annuities offer some protection against stock market losses, as well as the potential to profit from the market’s gains. While investors could benefit from gains in the stock market, the annuities also guaranteed a minimum rate no matter how poorly the market performed. Insurers don’t lose money so that guarantee comes at a hefty cost. Fixed annuities are like a bank account with a fixed rate of return. You earn less because the insurer’s current bonds pay less. Variable annuities provide performance based on an underlying portfolio of mutual funds. You pay fees for the annuity and for the funds so the value can fall over the short term. You have costly tax-deferred growth and a death benefit. Finally, immediate annuities pay a fixed amount starting the next month. They guarantee that amount for your life so inflation can cut your real income in HALF over 20 years. Annuities are almost impossible to cancel so they are used to supplement your retirement incomes. The bulk of your retirement income should be from a balanced mutual fund: stocks for growth; bonds for income. Some funds have low fees so you earn more.
