JPMorgan counting on us buyandhold investors to save them

Turn off your RMD auto-distribution: don’t sell shares now
Those of us with automatic RMD distributions may want to suspend this service temporarily. We have until December 31 each year (unless this is your 1st year) to take the amount required from qualified accounts in order to pay tax on the gains. Taking your RMD at the bottom of the market will cost you more precious shares than previous years. Don’t LOCK-IN your losses! I put an alarm in my cell to tell me to switch RMD distributions back on in July, Aug, Sept, Oct, Nov or December just in case I forget. We must take our full calculated RMD by December 31. Our past schedule is void. Hopefully the market will regain some of its 25% losses by then. You can do this on Vanguard’s account summary page with the link in right column:
“Required minimum distribution”

It took 4 years for the stock market index to recover from 2008 lows
Depending on your portfolio profile, it will take time to recover from this stock market correction. If you use the stock market as your checking or savings account, you will suffer when you sell. If however, you are a long-term investor, just turn your head from the daily gyrations and BUY like Buffett. Last year the stock market gained 31%. The long-term average is still 11%. If you pay your advisor 2% you will have to wait a longer time. If you think of your money in terms of short- and long-term reserves, this correction has no impact on your ultimate goals. John Bogle, founder of Vanguard, said that you can control what you pay for advice not control the market. Giving away 2% of your long-term money will decrease your final accumulation by up to 63%. “Over a 50-year investing lifetime, that little 2 percent fee will erode 63 percent of what you would have had. As Bogle puts it, “the tyranny of compounding costs” is overwhelming.”

Why market timing does NOT work
JPMorgan found that the 40 best days accounted for more than the entire S&P 500 return from 1993–2013. If you miss the best days trying to time the best exit and enter days, you end up with returns just above the inflation rate: 3.79%. Buffett says: “The stock market is a device for transferring money from the impatient to the patient.” We need patience while it is going up and going down. “A very low-cost index is going to beat a majority of the amateur-managed money or professionally-managed money.” Why? Because no professional has beaten the market return over time. They say they have but they picked two of their lucky days to market their hype. Research: from 1871–2016, the 5 most positive monthly returns in S&P 500 history came in the 1930s as the U.S. came OUT of the Great Depression.  Time to BUY: smart money moves to Vanguard.

JPMorgan counting on us buyandhold investors to save them
Speculators who send stocks down by selling to avoid the lows in a panic like the current one are counting on us long-term investors to bail them out according to JPMorgan. Strategists at the bank reckon there’s a good chance that buy-and-hold managers like pension funds, insurers, sovereign wealth funds and the like are ready to stabilize markets with stock buying in order to rebalance their portfolios away from bonds. Stocks have fallen so much that many institutions will be forced to sell bonds to rebalance their holdings. Some analysts say that rebalancing is not necessary since stocks and bonds eventually rebound to their original ratios in the long term. Rebalancing is actually selling winners before their time. It is a form of market timing. Tortoise not hare wins.

How teacher 403b plan advisors get paid
Teachers may be losing HALF their potential retirement funds to advisors and plan sponsors. Some 403b plans are actually annuities with excessive fees—2.5% a year plus recordkeeping fees, maintenance fees and contract fees. You might be contributing a great amount of your salary every year—$4,400 a year—but plans are taking $2,000. If you invested in stocks and your account grew to $500,000 by age 66, you would be paying over $12,000 a year for few services. Services would be in the form of a telephone service center, not a live advisor. Even though your school organization is charged by law to provide fiduciary duty (best options for you), they contract it out to an insurer or other “third party.” There are so many ‘mouths’ to feed that you are left with the crumbs. 401k plans at larger organizations are now repaying their workers after many years of overcharging for retirement fund services. Your teacher union may have already started action against your 403b plan administrator. Robbing you blind.

Who got rich from the last bailout?
Your tax dollars are going to make many rich people richer. During the last bailout crisis, even the foreign banks and profitable firms  got money they did not need. None of them said no. This time Boeing, which killed a lot of people from bad management, wants $60 BILLIONS of our money. The whole leisure class industry wants $BILLIONS including The Boss’s hotels, golf resorts, and global properties. Most of those crying for bailouts had large surpluses from huge profits during the last 12-year bull market. They spent it on themselves—buybacks, CEO bonuses, more jets, etc. Remember, many of these firms have paid no taxes for years. Like The Boss, they have used every trick in the book to avoid paying their fair share. An unbiased analysis of this situation would be that America is a socialist country for the rich. We pay subsidies to profitable firms and have been doing so for decades. Subsidies to the elites is what American is all about. Even our Reps use info illegally. Lobbyists tell our Reps what to subsidize in return for election money. Why are we still providing oil, coal and gas subsidies to profitable companies? Trump pays oil/gas companies when the oil/gas market price falls. He promises agribusiness price guarantees and support payments to keep that group voting for him. The national debt has surged from $20 trillion to $23 trillion since Trump started. He promised to pay it all off.

File your taxes for free
TurboTax and other for-profit tax prep firms are due to raise prices soon. If you have your documents, use your favorite software now and file your tax now for refund. The payment, if any, can be in July; the filing should not. Rumors confirmed: filing delayed to July 15. Check your state for deadline. The federal and state filing can cost you nothing at https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/. Another site has no cost or restrictions: https://www.creditkarma.com/tax. And remember you can usually reduce income and thus tax by making a deductible contribution to your IRA. File now for refund: 90 day interest-free extension if you owe.

So how does your advisor broker survive on $0 commissions?

Happy Holiday

So how does your advisor broker survive on $0 commissions?
There is no FREE lunch especially in financial services. Schwab paid its chief executive, Walt Bettinger, an 8.9% compensation hike in 2018 to $15.6 million (down from 2016 of  $19.54 million), about 150 times the firm’s median employee pay of $104,281. Charles gave himself $6.05 million, up 9.6% from 2017. Like others, Schwab had a profit margin of 45%. So how do we give them so much money if not in commissions? Firms execute others’ trades: Selling order flow. Firms earn interest on your cash. Earn from loans: margin trading and options trading. Earn from money management accounts: quarterly fee for ‘holding’ your money. Securities lending: covers shorts. Remember, most firms have such huge economies of scale that trading millions of shares a day at only 10 cents each is worth $ millions for senior management. Some firms are market makers and so have a virtual monopoly on certain markets. For instance, two former Deutsche Bank traders were found guilty of trying to rig a key lending benchmark (LIBOR) that was considered one of the most important barometers of the world’s financial health. Some brokerage firms are also capital creators selling IPOs: the stocks of new companies for big fees. There is no need to pay for advisors. Amateur traders usually lose money. Most smaller active stock managers may become history since beating an index is too hard.

Congress just gave insurers and salespeople a big bonus
They passed the SECURE Act, "The SECURE Act will make it easier for employers to offer as part of their retirement plans annuities that provide a guaranteed stream of lifetime income," says an insurance lobbyist. Employers and their retirement plan person can entice us into high-cost plans that lock up our retirement dollars into an insurer’s vaults. Using industry trick-phrases like “guaranteed income you can’t outlive” and misleading charts with best possible outcomes, employers can wash their hands of any future responsibility for the inevitable low payouts down the line. For instance, when we chose an annuity of $1000 a month in 2020, we will have no recourse when it buys only $500 a month benefits later on. Currently, a retiree can shop and buy the best annuity deal out there with their money. Under SECURE, employers will be able to escape any future lawsuit when an annuity ‘guarantee’ goes wrong. We are NOT secure with SECURE.

How much IRA money should you convert to Roth IRA?
If you have a good idea how much income and thus tax you will pay for 2019, you can calculate how much IRA money to convert. If you file jointly, your $100,000 earned income puts you in the 22% bracket. With the standard deduction of $24,400, you can estimate the amount of IRA income to be taxed on for the year. You can convert to a Roth IRA as much as you can afford since the $7,000 limit on contributions does not apply. Example: $100,000 - $24,400 = $75,600. With $5,000 added income (SS, pension, interest, dividends, gains, etc) you can convert up to $88,000 without hitting the 24% bracket. Of course you will owe an extra $19,360 tax on top of the $17,600 AGI income tax. Pace it out over time. Use the FREE efile software to calculate: https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free: now open: https://www.freetaxusa.com/ .

How much will you be required to withdrawal from your IRA 2020?
IRS expects those over 70 ½ years old with a traditional IRA to take a certain amount out and pay tax on the taxable amount. Your IRA trustee or custodian reports your year end IRA account balances to the IRS and if you allow, calculates your RMD for the year. IRS tables tell us the divisor based on your assumed longevity. RMD is the ‘minimum’ you need to acknowledge and pay tax on. You can take more and pay more tax now. The IRS leaves it up to you to report how much of the RMD is taxable each year. Some people added already taxed money to their IRA (before the Roth IRA) so no need to be taxed again. You can adjust that RMD by removing money from your IRA and paying more tax before year-end. You might do that if you have no income other than SS benefits or you had to meet an emergency. Reducing the IRA balance by year-end will lower the RMD for the rest of your life. Thus if you have a $100,000 in your IRA your RMD is $3,773.58 because you are expected to live 26.5 years more when you are 71. If you took out $20,000 the year before the calculation, your RMD would be $3,018.87 the following year.

How to fight health care overcharges by your providers
Recently I got a bill from my colonoscopy provider. I thought all screening procedures are FREE since my expensive health care plan is usually excellent. My employer told me on my W-2 box 12a that my shared cost was $26,920.68. I did some research and printed out the FREE screening protocols for ACA ObamaCare compliant health plans. The ACA Preventive health initiative by Obama is meant to reduce long-term costs by catching problems early. I assumed my provider knew this when I confirmed that all the costs of my procedure would be covered. So I sent a copy of the ACA regs to the provider’s billing address with a note that I was covered. They just sent more bills and emails for months. The doctor’s office ignored me. Like in the movie Rainmaker, we pay premiums and the insurer-doctor complex assumes we will give up fighting. Since I knew they were wrong, I wrote a letter to the CEO of my insurance company asking him to pay the bill and set the provider’s billing clerk straight. They called the provider group HD and told me I would not get another bill. Most people would just give up and be sued and perhaps be thrown into bankruptcy. It happens a lot since we have no power against the insurer-doctor complex.

Vanguard cut fees AGAIN
Vanguard has cut some fees 20% for funds and ETFs. Why is that important? Over time you will earn and KEEP substantially more of your hard-earned money. If you are investing for the long term, you could give up $143,000 on $10,000 deposit with that 20% extra fee. Compounding the extra fees works for your advisor just as well as it can work for you. This fact never comes to mind for most of us because our employer’s HR person never tells us exactly and completely what our 401k or 403b investments cost. Some of them don’t know. Most of us have no idea which options are best for us when we start our plan. Some employers don’t even look at fees when giving the plan advisor the annual check up. Even if they know what the fees are, they don’t care because WE are ones paying them. It comes out of our earnings even before our earnings are credited to our accounts. We don’t see them. Our employer has the fiduciary responsibility for choosing the best options for US not the advisor. However, most employers don’t take their duty seriously and this has led to many lawsuits. Over time, this can cost you over $100,00 in lost earnings on your invested money.

Your retirement plan takes 63% of your nest egg?

How much has YOUR retirement plan stolen from you?
The people who work for non-profit institutions often have the WORST retirement plans.
In fact, millions of people—teachers, clergy, nonprofit and charity employees who have NO say in their 403(b) plans—may be losing $10 billion each and every year to middlemen who do little to help them, according to Aon. Over your lifetime of saving—and teachers are some of the best savers—your fees will erode 63 percent of what you would have had. Fees go to sales people you have never even met. In short, because of the financial products forced on you by your employer, you may end up with $100,000 instead of $150,000. Your union and your employer actually went along with this HUGE rip-off knowing (kickbacks) the plan options you had to take were not the best. There is no oversight of the insurers and mutual fund firms that take fees up to 2.5% instead of the normal 0.5%. 403b plans are their “cash cow.” These firms know you know nothing about investing, so they throw hundreds of costly options into your plan in the name of choice. Worse, some public employees will not receive Social Security. Most honest advisors use index funds or ETF for unsophisticated retirement savers. And the rip will go on since the new Fiduciary Rule (client’s interests first) does not cover the 403b.

Is a market index mutual fund right for you?
What criterion do you use to decide about your advisor’s recommendations? Do you try to understand why that security is picked? Can your advisor tell you why this one will help you reach your goals in what time period? What are the alternatives that might entail less risk? Index funds and ETFs (commissioned index) replicate a market return if they have low fees. Cost is the best predictor of your investment success. So that is the first question I ask. You need to know about the history of a security/company you buy. No investment product is perfect so you may be safer with an index that contains 500 companies not 1. Broad market indexes are popular because you’re buying many firms. This protects you from one firm or sector failure. Stocks have higher returns when you hold them for over 15 years so for that part of your investments, they are right for you. If you need another part of your money to be there when you need it in less than 15 years, a low-cost balanced fund with bonds can provide 9% a year. http://www.saferchild.org/power/
Vanguard’s best funds have provided over 11% over time: https://www.amazon.com/Vanguards-Top-Ten-mutual-funds/dp/150073909X

How much can you invest in your retirement account in 2017?
IRS just announced the new 2017 limits in https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-drop/n-16-62.pdf. For IRA and Roth IRA contributions, it remains $5,500. For 401k, 403b, 457 and TSP it remains $18,000. A deductible IRA cuts off at AGI of $196,000 if you have no plan at work. It is $119,000 for marrieds who have a plan at work and $72,000 for singles. For those of you in company pensions using 430c2d excess employee compensation you have a special election up to $1,115,000. If you already have a healthy IRA, you can convert any part of it to a Roth IRA making it a tax-FREE shelter for the rest of your life and your heirs. This can be your family legacy plan at no extra cost too.

Your vote counts? Lobbyists guide government decisions no matter how you vote
When a large corporation has a problem with the government, who do you think they call to fix it? They call their lobbyist like Teneo. They pay our former President, congress person or Speaker of the House to go talk to their friends who still collect measly ($100k) government paychecks. They take them to lunch or pay for this or that. Voilà the decision comes down that fixes the problem. What Teneo and others are selling is access. Corporations buy “juice”; influence and it is a deductible expense to them. “The ability to bring business and political leaders together to meet the C.E.O.s was all part of the selling point.” $1 million a month buys all kinds of influence in 12 different areas—regulation, security, negotiation, diplomacy, financial, etc. For instance, Ms. Abedin worked for Teneo while simultaneously worked as Mrs. Clinton’s aide in the State Dprt. There are over 10,000 lobbyists “running” this country. Don or Bernie don’t have a chance. You need “juice” to change things: https://www.amazon.com/Create-Your-Tax-FREE-Financial-System/dp/1466367466

Use your Tax Credits to avoid income taxes like Trump
Most of us receive only 4% of federal tax breaks like food stamps and Earned Income Credit if you are poor or the property tax and mortgage credit if you are middle class.
The Tax-Credit Class pays less income tax with capital gains and dividends because it is “unearned.” So if you actually work; you are taxed MORE. For instance, Warren Buffett pays 17% on earnings while we pay 33% total tax. The Tax-Credit Class pays NOTHING on assets they got from a “rich uncle” and on their home when they sell. Most of us don’t “itemize” so we lose all kinds of tax credits. We pay 33% of income for many taxes. We are nickel and dimed for 97 kinds of taxes. The Tax-Credit class deducts medical expenses, job hunting and work expenses not reimbursed by others, deferred compensation (bonus and stock portfolio worth more later), investment loans and costs, investment losses, stuff they lose, stuff they own. They can eliminate income tax by listing losses from buildings, race horses, farms, oil, leasing and businesses they own as partners, LLCs, C and S corps. Trump actually deducted $916 million but most of it was other people’s money. Some bank debt was cancelled which normally is taxable but not after RE lobbyists got Congress to change rules in 1993. Trump is tax-FREE for 18 years.
