Advisors are trying to become psychologists

Some “financial” writers just don’t know

“6 Safe and Smart Investments for Retirees” is misleading and mostly wrong. There are no “safe” investments. Even the fixed rate bank CD is subject to loss of purchasing power. That means you can’t buy what you could have 5 years or even 1 year before. Same for “tax-free” municipal bonds since bonds might end up costing you money. Lending to an individual without some security can leave you with a big loss. Peer-to-peer lending is not without risks: the borrower could default. Annuities are touted as a “safe” investment. However, you can lose money since annuities have many costs and conditions. Insurers make sure they don’t lose even if you have an emergency withdrawal. Even government I bonds have risks. The core rates are low and you will be disappointed if inflation is flat. The costs associated with being a landlord of a rental property can include the human toll of constant aggravation from tenant demands. SS benefits include an inflation-adjusted monthly payment that is good for life and backed by the government. Waiting to age 70 to claim means benefits will be much greater for life. So, every one must decide on a balance between risk and reward. Retirees will need more money for a longer period so the risk of not having enough must be addressed by continuing to invest in a diversified portfolio including stock funds.

IRA: tax-FREE or tax-deductible?

Depending on where you are in your investing life, one or the other IRA is an appropriate source of retirement income. The “traditional” IRA lets you reduce your current income so you pay fewer taxes NOW. The “Roth” IRA lets you increase your retirement income by avoiding taxes then. Thus, you have a significant choice. Given your overall income level, you can reduce income taxes during your whole working life OR you can exclude federal and state income taxes later when you may need more income. This means that depending on how you invest your Roth investments, you could have a potentially greater nest egg to spend and never pay taxes on the withdrawals. In fact you can convert the money in your traditional tax-deferred account to a Roth at a later time when it may benefit you more. The IRA expert, Ed Slott, (IRAhelp.com) can explain why a Roth conversion is his No. 1 tax tip for this year. You may need to use his site to calculate which deal is better for you at your current stage of investing.

Save $1000: maintain your vehicles

Don’t ignore “check engine” light. Keep tires at correct pressure. Change oil and regular maintenance as your manual says not as your mechanic wants. Check your PCV valve, windshield cracks, fluid leaks when parked, and any unusual noises. Save more over your car’s lifetime buy shopping for insurance every 2 years. Insurers change their marketing plan every year and it is easy to $500 every time you shop. Major carriers will cut premiums if you are able to raise your deductible. Many have over 20 discounts your agent may not tell you about (commissions are a % of premiums). Bundling policies (including “Umbrella” cover) may or may not save total premium. I have had home insurance for 30 years and would lose money by combining with other policies.

Advisors are trying to become psychologists

This advisor says people are asking: Can you help me define the next stage in my life? What’s going to be my purpose? What’s my “aspirational lifestyle”? And how does that guide my financial choices? Sounds like your therapist not your advisor. Almost all advisors have had no training in answering these questions. He thinks people are demanding humanistic advice of their financial counselor, and he thinks he as a wealth manager can use this need to grow his business. His firm partnered with Columbia University to develop an advisor training program that is based on providing a more holistic, “purpose-driven” approach to planning. It’s been incredibly popular with both advisors and clients he claims. This advisor thinks advisors need to help clients “envision their aspirational lifestyle in their next life chapter.” He says people want more financial stability in retirement. This “stability” is usually interpreted by sellers to mean annuity needed. This writer actually works for an annuity company so his remarks support the push for high-commission/fee annuity sales. And most advisors are focused on revenue growth for their firms. In fact, 72% new advisors quit as most of the training programs are very sales-based. Wall Street wants revenue not therapists.

Our Universe is Mind-Blowing

Light is both a particle and a wave depending on how we look at the light.

I don’t think that there is any such thing as a position or a velocity of a particle.

Everything (galaxies to stones) in universe made of subatomic energy ‘vibrations’

A subatomic ‘particle’ is the smallest possible vibration (quantum) of a quantum field.

Mass–energy equivalence: E=mc^2.  At the smallest level; Everything is moving

Energy into matter: scientists converted light energy directly into matter in one step

In place of atomic lattice, light waves used to create an optical lattice with same geometry

Physics Nobel Prize: “entanglement” 2 particles share info instantly at a distance

Quantum mechanics violates local realism: two objects behave as single system at distance

“It may be that gravity and quantum mechanics are exactly the same thing,” Leonard Susskind

Gravity might induce the collapse of quantum vibrations into 1 quantum state—our world

Strange state of physics that allows energy to flow frictionlessly through a material

Bending light from extreme gravity reveals largest black hole so far

Curved SpaceTime: heavy masses and simultaneously quantum effects become visible

There is no TIME at this level because of force fields come and go in all directions.

Universe expanding: events may not come together like they did before: created our time.

Our planetary system: rarest system: only 1% of all systems with same number of planets

Inside protons, neutrons, it is the fields of the virtual particles that creates its mass.

Gold made from neutron stars: collisions produce more neutrons:79 protons,118 neutrons

The proton is so complicated science still finds new energy entities/forces every year.

“Empty space is a boiling, bubbling brew of virtual particles that pop in and out of existence in a time scale so short that you can’t even measure them.” Space expanding.

The electricity we use comes from the field around the wire not from electron itself.

Perfect time to convert part of your IRA to a Roth IRA

Is putting off retirement right for you?
A quarter of Baby Boomers plan to postpone their retirement. The virus pandemic has changed a lot of lives and plans. If you start Social Security benefits you cannot go back. Previously this was allowed. This makes your decision all the more important. Many will wait because they do not wish to begin taking retirement money from an IRA or pension now. Studies have shown that doing so can hurt you in later years if you have a big reduction in your nest egg immediately. If you have 30 years in retirement, you don’t want to begin with a bad 1st year. Also, this is one of the worst times to buy an annuity since future benefits are calculated on the current very low interest rate. You could only receive $437 a month for life in return for your $100,000 if you were male age 60. On the other hand, if you had to retire due to job shut down, you could receive $896 a month for 10 years in the hope you would be better situated later. Delaying SS benefits to age 70 provides a much larger monthly income: $3,790 maximum for someone who files at age 70 compared to $2,265 maximum for someone who files at age 62. Maximum benefits require higher incomes for your final 35 years of work. The average benefit is $1,503. Also remember taxes are due on up to 85% of SS benefits if your total income is higher unless you have tax-FREE Roth IRA income.

With the virus passing 4 million, what can you do to save your nest egg?
If there's anything you should expect out of 2020, it's volatility and unpleasant surprises. Most people are checking their account more often and that is a recipe for disaster. Panic selling is what happened in 2007-8. The stock market fell 37%. Some investors think they can avoid the market drop by selling. But your advisor doesn’t know when the market will come back as in 2009-10 with 27% and 15% growth. We can’t control the virus or the market so we must focus on our nest egg end time. A stock market index fund is the only asset class that has proven 11% returns over time. Wealthy investors in hedge funds etc have a really bad record of losses. They can afford to take a chance on alternative assets; we can’t. Warren Buffett, one of the most successful investors, says holding a low-cost stock index fund so we take advantage of compounding earnings is the best way to protect our nest egg, rain or shine. Costs are all we can control.

Is buying the ‘hot’ fund now right for you?
Advisors and young investors try to pick the ETF funds that are rising or will rise during the current conditions. They want to ride the wave to the top. Problem is: momentum trading does not work. Over time, picking the hot security usually results in disappointment. Why? No trend lasts for long. With index funds of all types, the past trends have been changed—watered down. Be wary: past performance is no guarantee of the future; only the hype. The owners of Wall Street firms are great at the hype. What else do they have? They don’t have a predictable product nor a person who has golden hands nor a crystal ball nor a way to control the underlying factors nor a magic wand. All they have to make the sale to you is the B.S., the “story” as my firm’s FCs used to call it.

Why are target-date funds so popular?
Short answer: they use the three best investment strategies available to working people. First, they are usually low cost. This means that over time, you don’t give up over 60% of  your earnings to sellers. Second, they use compounding—the miracle of compounding—earning money on money by itself. Third, they usually hold index funds which can provide 11% earnings from many profitable companies—you are diversified. The added bonus is that as you get closer to retirement, your assets and contributions become less volatile—from 90% stock to 30% stock balance. Unless you are wealthy enough to loose 1/3 of your wealth in a derivative or leveraged hedge fund, this one fund decision is all you need to be a successful investor. It just takes time. Warren Buffett recommends it.

Perfect time to convert part of your IRA to a Roth IRA
If your income and thus taxes will be lower during this pandemic, converting taxable future income to tax-FREE future income may make sense now. If you are over age 59 ½, you can take out IRA money with no penalty—just extra taxes—at lower rates than future years. If your income and tax burden allow it, taking any amount--$10,000, $20,000 even $30,000 from your future retirement account is a smart move now since all the earnings in the future will be tax-FREE. Even if you are in retirement now when you do NOT have to take your 2020 RMD—forced IRA distributions—your tax liability will be less this year so you can afford to take and pay tax on a chunk of your IRA. Because the stock market is still positive, you can convert your stock IRA money to future positive income with no tax in the future. Many advisors see higher taxes in the future (to pay for the Trump tax cuts to the wealthy and virus expenses). You benefit two ways: take advantage of lower current taxes and avoid paying the increase later. You will pay less tax later as you take out smaller traditional IRA distributions AND your future taxable income will be less. Roth IRA balances can accumulate for your whole life without distributions or tax payments. You may be able to avoid income tax on your Social Security benefits too.

How the super wealthy—$100 billion—avoid income tax
Zuckerberg’s net worth just passed $100 billion. Can you write $1,000,000,000 one hundred times? He joins Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates in the clouds. Zuckerberg’s net worth is largely derived from his 13% stake in Facebook. Since these guys and other uber gelt holders do not have to take a salary, they have no taxable income. Think of that! Like the old Robber Baron times, they can sit in their home offices and clip coupons/dividends. Yes it is possible to pay no taxes. Our president claimed that he pays no income taxes too. However, we know he owes a lot so that may be how the wealthy buy things—they live on loans. So Zuck, Jeff, Bill and Don can just text their bank and get a loan every year to pay for maintaining their lifestyles. You don’t pay income taxes on a loan. They also don’t pay for the public services they use—airports, roads, courts, army navy air force. We pay for those on their behalf. Because their companies pay for most of their ‘overhead’ private planes, health insurance, gym, body guards, meals, etc, they don’t need to pay much “out-of-pocket” expense either. We pay for that when we buy stuff.

Some Americans pay; others receive

Americans live in two separate and unequal worlds
And the bailouts reflect this. In early March, the Fed kept cash flowing -- and limited losses for some billion-dollar hedge funds that made wrong-way bets with borrowed money. For some, what could be called the Fed’s triumph of efficiency could also be interpreted as rewarding rich gamblers. Neighborhood business owners, many of whom did the right thing by closing their doors to help stop the spread of the virus, have had to white-knuckle it for weeks. Some of the 1.7 million applicants approved for PPP loans describe bureaucratic runarounds. Those like Robyn Shultz sweat it out, waiting for the Treasury Department to calm the confusion and for Congress’s additional resources to arrive. “I was told I was caller number 1,403, and it would be around a three-hour wait,” said one applicant. “I stayed on the line for several hours before it went dead. I never ended up connecting with anyone.” Many small businesses say they are angry that bigger companies have gotten PPP loans and they haven’t. On April 19, several small businesses filed a lawsuit in federal court in Los Angeles against four lenders -- Wells Fargo & Co., Bank of America Corp., JPMorgan Chase & Co. and US Bancorp -- accusing them of approving big loans first. Many big businesses have access to money but took PPP ‘loans’ because they are free. “I really have no faith,” Shultz said. “I have no faith in the system. In this government. In this leadership.” Again, it is socialism for the rich.

Investors opened IRAs at a record level in the first quarter
Millennials, the Fidelity report noted, accounted for a majority of the new IRAs, with contributions among that group increasing 41% over last year, while the amount they contributed increased 64%. Among female millennials, the number of IRAs increased 20% from a year earlier. Surprisingly, market swings did not hold investors back from moving money into their accounts. Hardship loans averaging $10,550 were up slightly before the virus hit on a mass scale. The CARES Act allows more flexible withdrawals so future rates will be higher. Investors did not make big changes to their portfolio asset allocations even with market downturns. Most investors seem to be “staying the course” as John Bogle Vanguard found used to advise. Impatience leads to losses.

State revenues are negative
No sales tax and huge unemployment comp bills spells higher taxes or cuts in local services. Not enough tests, lack of personal protective equipment24 million newly unemployed, not enough ventilators, tens of thousands of shuttered business. Our GOP Senators have said they don’t want to help our states out. They are busy helping their friends in high places who will pay for their next election. Trump will give cash-rich oil companies direct access to our Treasury. That means our federal income taxes will go up to pay off the federal deficit. Some blue states have had to buy their own medical equipment at gouged prices. The feds have just come and taken it. Jared, Trump son-in-law says of the fed supplies:  “it's supposed to be our stockpile,” not the states.’ So with less coming in and more going out and the GOP advocating bankruptcy, we taxpayers will be asked to step up and pay more. Many wealthy people have already moved out of the states, so they won’t be paying their fair share. Don’t pay their taxes.
