Retirees NOT forced to sell shares for IRS

Retirees may NOT be forced to sell shares by IRS
Congress passed the $2 Trillion bailout bill that may allow retirees to stop selling shares to fulfill the RMD requirements of their retirement accounts. While this measure and others would allow savers to keep more of their savings, waiving the RMD for 2020, the House bill would work in favor of those who don’t need to live off of their IRA or 401(k) retirement funds. This would benefit those who are not living off their retirement nest eggs at the present time. The RMD is calculated on the previous December account balances for all those over 70.5 years of age. We must pay taxes on the gains that have been cut drastically by the C-19 market sell off. To reach the amount specified by our RMD, we would need to sell more shares than we would have had to a month ago. Waiving the RMD requirement for 2020 would reduce the tax revenue this year. Taxes will need to be increased in coming years to pay for the additional $2 Trillion spent by Congress.

My shares of stock and mutual funds are hanging on
I have increased my shares by NOT selling. The dividends I receive are adding more shares because the share price has fallen. Shares are on SALE. This is why Buffett is buying not selling. Buffett’s companies like Geico are still in business and collecting $ millions in premiums so he has $ billions to buy shares of Kroger, Delta, etc when the price is low for growing firms. Like Buffett I am buying stocks and shares of quality firms while they are on sale. They are on sale because of panic and the fact that some active mutual fund managers don’t want to end the quarter with a big loss. They will say they only lost 15% when the market index is down 25%. So they are selling at a loss which they can offset with some gains. I am not worried about my investment return number for the quarter. I am investing for future income and so when the price goes up, my shares will be worth more. And I will pay no taxes which will surely go up.

GOP uses the virus to give their “friends and family” more of our tax dollars
Did they forget the last time: Big and reckless businesses got bailed out, with no one going to jail, while ordinary Americans lost their homes and jobs? The virus is just an excuse. Some on the right are calling it an act of God--the better to justify their support of massive government spending. One White House official said Trump “doesn’t give a [expletive]” about the plan’s impact on the federal debt. “It’s all about the markets and the economy for him. It’s all about the jobs numbers.” Re-election is the prime driver. The Senate Republican plan to send every household $1,200 for each adult and $500 for every child is an inefficient and ineffective way to stabilize the economy. It’s also a cynical ploy by Mob Boss Trump and the GOP to buy the next election. The better strategy is to get money into the hands of cash-strapped businesses that promise to use it to keep workers on their payrolls. A better effort would be to make sure states can pay all the laid off workers who will need the essentials. Unemployment insurance can’t cover the estimated 80 million workers out of a full-time job. The last time we had millions of unemployed we did something about it: we made work for them. We built buildings, schools, dams and bridges. Dams not coal make electricity.

It took 4 years for the stock market index to recover from 2008 lows
Depending on your portfolio profile, it will take time to recover from this stock market correction. If you use the stock market as your checking or savings account, you will suffer when you sell. If however, you are a long-term investor, just turn your head from the daily gyrations and BUY like Buffett. Last year the stock market gained 31%. The long-term average is still 11%. If you pay your advisor 2% you will have to wait a longer time. If you think of your money in terms of short- and long-term reserves, this correction has no impact on your ultimate goals. John Bogle, founder of Vanguard, said that you can control what you pay for advice not control the market. Giving away 2% of your long-term money will decrease your final accumulation by up to 63%. “Over a 50-year investing lifetime, that little 2 percent fee will erode 63 percent of what you would have had. As Bogle puts it, “the tyranny of compounding costs” is overwhelming.”

Who got rich from the last bailout?
Your tax dollars are going to make many rich people richer. During the last bailout crisis, even the foreign banks and profitable firms got money they did not need. None of them said no. This time Boeing, which killed a lot of people from bad management, got BILLIONS of our money. The whole leisure class industry wants $ BILLIONS including The Boss’s hotels, golf resorts, and global properties. Most of those crying for bailouts had large surpluses from huge profits during the last 12-year bull market. They spent it on themselves—buybacks, CEO bonuses, more jets, etc. Remember, many of these firms have paid no taxes for years. Like The Boss, they have used every trick in the book to avoid paying their fair share. An unbiased analysis of this situation would be that America is a socialist country for the rich. We pay subsidies to profitable firms and have been doing so for decades. Subsidies to the elites is what American is all about. Even our Reps use info illegally. Lobbyists tell our Reps what to subsidize in return for election money. Why are we still providing oil, coal and gas subsidies to profitable companies? Trump pays farm/oil/gas companies when the market price falls. He promises agribusiness price guarantees and support payments to keep that group voting for him. The national debt has surged from $20 trillion to $23 trillion since Trump started. He promised to pay it all off. Instead he has made our tax yoke heavier in the future.

File your taxes for free
TurboTax and other for-profit tax prep firms are due to raise prices soon. If you have your documents, use your favorite software now and file your tax now for refund. The payment, if any, can be in July; the filing should not. Rumors confirmed: filing delayed to July 15. Check your state for deadline. The federal and state filing can cost you nothing at https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/. Another site has no cost or restrictions: https://www.creditkarma.com/tax. And remember you can usually reduce income and thus tax by making a deductible contribution to your IRA. File now for refund: 90 day interest-free extension if you owe. https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-drop/n-20-18.pdf

Sell your stock or home without gains tax!

You can sell your long-held stock or home without gains tax!
If you have stocks that have gained a lot and now you fear selling because of the capital gains tax, one solution is to wait till your income is under $80,000 (MFJ). At that stage, the tax is 0%. To avoid future tax on this money, put up to $6,000 a year into a Roth IRA for each of you ($7,000 over age 50). If you have owned your home for a long time and now wish to sell, you can avoid the tax on $500,000 capital gains for joint owners. In most cases you don’t even have to report the sale and gain unless your real estate person files an unnecessary form. If your gain is over $½ million you can’t avoid the gain by doing a 1035 asset exchange. However, you can use the exclusion more than once.

Is a charitable remainder trust a viable alternative to the Stretch IRA?
First name a charitable remainder trust as the beneficiary of your IRA to avoid the taxes due on your tax-deferred account. Second, name the trust beneficiaries, such as children or grandchildren, so they will collect the fixed payouts for life or for a set number of years. Third, name the charity to get what’s left (a minimum of 10% of the initial value of trust must be donated). Do the heirs have taxes to pay each fixed payout? Yes, just like inheriting an IRA except the tax can be paid out over a longer period of time. Make sure your trust is legal in your state.

Insurers win again
Lobbyists for the insurance companies are most responsible for the end of the estate plan of leaving your kids your retirement fund, IRA and Roth IRA. Employers will ‘encourage’ their employees to buy an insurance product (annuity) to pay income to heirs over time. Insurers will be given $ trillions by retirees on the promise of ‘guaranteed funds for life.’ This ‘guarantee’ is what most people say they want. Trouble comes when inflation cuts the value of each monthly payment by HALF. Annuity benefits are set at purchase even when interest rates are low. Insurers will have our money whether we live for 30 years or 5 years. Some insurers will ‘pass away’ before their annuitants do: some heirs will get little. Employers receive a benefit too. They will not be liable if something goes wrong with the plan. We will be fighting an insurance conglomerate not our employer for the rest of our payout. We give up our principal even if we die in a year after purchase. Most annuities have no refund option.

Vanguard or Fidelity?
Study: Vanguard was able to run their funds in a more tax-efficient manner. The research clearly found that Fidelity was the winner on expense ratios. This was true across the board. The result is perhaps surprising given Vanguard’s record of historical cost leadership within the industry. Still it’s clear in the data that Fidelity holds the lead on fees. The researchers found that Vanguard funds were, on average, slightly more diversified. Generally, either Fidelity or Vanguard funds appear reasonable picks for most investors, with the investment strategy being perhaps the more important question. But the Johnson family still makes money from its clients.

Taxes: from you’all to the tax-credit class
Look at the effect of the tax breaks of 2017 and 2019: US increased the deficit to $1 TRILLION for the 1st time. Billionaires and corporation pay less than we do: 17%-21% vs 32.9% for us. The social safety net for us is being cut: SS disability, food stamps, SS benefit reduction, loss of national free space, loss of clean air and water, loss of independent justice, loss of voting opportunities, loss of credibility in world. Subsidies to corporations going up with OpZone Zero tax plan, coal/gas/mining subsidies, bank subsidies, corn/farm/tariff subsidies, Boeing subsidies, ExIm bank subsidies, hedge fund subsidies. ZERO tax US corporations include Netflix, Amazon, Chevron, Delta Airlines, Eli Lilly, General Motors, Gannett, Goodyear, Halliburton, IBM, Jetblue Airways, Principal Financial, Salesforce.com, US Steel, and Whirlpool. There were 60 in 2018, Trump is the US authoritarian ‘socialist’ like Putin. All the tax benefits go to the top elite class just like in Russia. Like the USSR oligarchs, US oligarchs move their money offshore to avoid taxes. We already have socialism: those who have more pay least for American society. Working people pay 32.9% while rich pay 17% or less.

Why stocks are the best long-term investment even with market corrections
Warren Buffett has to be one of the all time successful investors. His company (Berkshire Hathaway) owns many other companies and the returns from owning its stocks are 20% double that of the market overall at 10%. Mr Buffett explains how he is successful in his letter to shareholders. It is worth reading because it is written in high-school level English not broker-speak. Most of his shareholders are not finance people. He explains how wealth is created by using compounded earnings. He explains why he is a ‘buy and hold’ investor. DALBAR, the firm that keeps score, shows that active trading investors earn just 3.79% whereas buy and hold index investors earn 10-11%. This is why the largest money managers have attracted more index investors from the brokerage business. Study after study shows that over time index investors who don’t trade earn more even in downturns. Sure, there are hedge funds that have done well during certain times but we don’t know which ones and when it will happen. Buffett put his $1 million bet behind his advice and beat 5 popular hedge funds from 2008 to 2017.

File your taxes for free
TurboTax and other for-profit tax prep firms are due to raise prices soon. If you have your documents, use your favorite software now and pay your tax due on April 15. The payment, if any, can be in April; the filing should not. The federal and state can cost you nothing at https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/. Another site has no cost or restrictions: https://www.creditkarma.com/tax. And remember you can usually reduce income and thus tax by making a deductible contribution to your IRA.

New tax avoidance plan

New tax avoidance plans for the wealthy
The best and brightest have a new way for you to avoid your fair share: insurance. Thanks to our reps in DC, it is one of the few products that lets you grow your legacy tax FREE and give your family a big seed fund FREE. Now you can avoid estate tax too with a special trust. Insurance dedicated funds are great for advisors too—big fee; no redemptions. You buy a private-placement life-insurance policy. The insurer invests in alternative assets such as hedge funds. Profits are not taxed because of certain restrictions. Beneficiaries get money when you die. You can’t pick the funds but no one can know how your account is doing either. No tax on the growth or legacy means you can distance yourself from most American’s net worth even more. Your advisor does well also. Our reps and lobbyists made this loophole and they could fix it too.

Who benefits from TrumpCare bill?
1%--40% of 1Trillion tax cuts go to top 1% and increases deficit immediately.
Trump tax windfall is retroactive to Jan 2017 for $250,000 or more incomes.
Insurers—create “sham” coverage policies: pay less; get less. No penalty on CEO pay.
Trump promised: target pharmaceutical companies over drug prices Jan 2016
Congress gets to keep ObamaCare coverage and 10 essentials and preexisting.
Seniors—pay up to 5 times more for less care. Nursing homes will expel middleclass.
Trump said: “lower numbers, much lower deductibles” Jan 2017
Disabled—Medicaid cut $600 billion so states will have to send disabled back to ERs.
Medicaid cuts start 2021 so Congress does not need to deal with the crisis!
Working poor—tax credit not cover cost of private market policy since most don’t pay taxes. Very little of state block grants will go to subsidizing coverage for Trump voters.
AZ gives us prelude to what happens to you when Medicaid cut: people die.
Trump: "I am going to take care of everybody. I don't care if it costs me votes or not," Trump said. “The government's gonna pay for it." Jan 2016  $3 million tax credit.
Most Americans don’t even know TrumpCare will change their lives dramatically. Maybe GOP wants TrumpCare to fail since mandate is GOP idea. Most Reps must vote party or lose seat next election from Koch money. AMA says NO: do no harm
Congress people KNOW these bills are bad for most Americans because they exempt selves:
Wealthy tax credit: $3 million per each uninsured death if passed

Can your investment plan carry you to age 100?
Every year you delay costs you $100,000 later
Attitude and genes have everything to do with living longer. Many retirees work past our assumed “retirement” age. Many work because they love it; others because they have to. Most realize our early-in-life choices determine our financial fitness for the future.
Example: invest just 10% from your first job onward and you will have enough later. A low-cost stock index fund has grown at 11% over time so your money doubles every 8-10 years IF you leave it alone to compound.
You can use an IRS-approved trust that makes all your earnings FREE of income tax for the rest of your life. Social Security will cut benefits by 2034 and income taxes will have to pay for the deficit of $161,000 each. Taxes don’t go down for us. Only the rich can afford to cut their taxes by living off capital. You can die without ObamaCare.

Wealthy Koch network plans to buy elections with $400 billion
The end of the environmental protection, Medicaid, Medicare and federal safety net when we get sick or get old are the goals of the “killer” network. They will spend $400 billion to buy our elections and push their agenda—tax cuts for the rich and the end of regulations that protect us from accidents and environment devastation. Koch and their friends will continue to take federal and state subsidies for their coal and oil operations as they pollute our future water and health. Koch uses religious themes to help seduce evangelical partners like Trump lawyer Sekulow’s CASE. Koch drove KS to near bankruptcy with their no tax for business plan and want to do the same to America.

Is your advisor providing you with accurate information?
The number one reason investors pay advisors more than they need to is ADVICE. Yet 35 percent of investors are not confident the information they receive is reliable. 41% say they either are not provided with core information about performance or they do not know if they are provided with all information. Investors are paying for a pig in a poke. There is good reason we don’t trust financial information. Wall Street hides the facts and regulators let it happen—they get paid. Things are changing finally. Vanguard, the low-cost pioneer, has made it easier to see total costs clearly. People want info: simple and readable. Bogle, the founder, created transparency by eliminating the middleman. Vanguard funds are owned by us investors; not Wall Street gurus. All costs (fees, commissions, loads, charges, and trading) are listed on the first page. You don’t need a broker or advisor. In fact, their fees etc could take up to 63% of your money over time. If you are invested for the long-term in a market index, you will earn the historical return of about 11% not the managed rate of 3.79%. When your advisor tells you that they can get a better rate, ask for proof. 90-95% of managed funds earn less. Costs are the best predictor of success—low cost means we keep more. Remember, when your advisor moves you out of the total market: 3 market days account for 95% of annual market gains—trading is dangerous to you; not them. The best trick is when they cherry pick the dates to compare to a benchmark or use start up fund returns.

10 highest rated and lowest rated cars of 2017
Consumer Reports says Toyota iA is rare in that it’s a safe, reliable, fun-to-drive entry-level car. It’s also CR’s highest-rated subcompact. The Cruze is the best-selling Chevy car in the world. Prius and Miata best in class. Kia Optima with fewest problems. Impala is the modern version of the classic highway cruiser. Top small SUV is Forester; large is Toyota Highlander. The Audi Q7 beat Tesla S. Finally, the Honda Ridgeline is just right.            On the other end, we have the 10 worst: Mitsubishi’s subcompact Mirage, Mitsubishi MiEV, Fiat 500L, Chrysler 200, Toyota Tacoma, Dodge Journey, Mercedes CLA, Maserati Ghibli, Rover Discovery Sport, and Cadillac Escalade.

Trump can create jobs if he wanted to
After Trump promised to save jobs and Carrier got $7 million from IN, the jobs are going to Mexico. Same story at Boeing where Trump boasted about saving jobs: Five months ago at a Boeing factory in South Carolina, President Trump proclaimed, “We are going to fight for every last American job.” On Thursday, workers at the North Charleston plant learned they’d soon face layoffs. Boeing on Friday issued 429 new layoff notices to union members in Washington State. 12,000 jobs went overseas since The Don took over. In this economy, change is the only constant. Business can’t be forced to keep $25 an hour jobs when $3 overseas. Jobs are created when new tech provides whole new markets to blossom. Electric cars /appliances are the future and they need batteries not more oil.
Despite putting money in coal jobs and canceling the Paris accord to reduce warming, Trump ignores jobs created in renewables—solar, battery, wind. As sea levels rise, jobs in coastal infrastructure are needed. The Don should be encouraging the growth trends: jobs with the highest growth between 2014 - 2024. Not all need a college education. Yet he cuts the retraining programs in coal country and around the nation.
