Best Way to Withdraw From Your Retirement Accounts

Will a $250,000 retirement fund be enough?

CORRECTION

Last week: “Your RMD will tell you how much you need in retirement” blurb was misleading. RMD is the required minimum distribution from your deferred retirement accounts (401k, 403b, other pension) so that income taxes can be assessed. The amount of your RMD is calculated by your mutual fund or brokerage from IRS tables based on your age and deferred accounts total at the end of the previous year. Because we all must withdrawal our amount, use an RMD calculator to test the total amount we will need to live on in retirement: our nest egg. https://www.aarp.org/work/retirement-planning/required-minimum-distribution-calculator.html For instance, if I need $833 a month, $10,000 a year for my basic needs, I use this calculator to estimate how much of a fund to accumulate. Based on this estimate, I will need to accumulate at least $250,000 in order to cover my basic spending. The IRS tables and our life expectancy changes so don’t use this calculator to determine your RMD for yourself. You can take your RMD out of one account, or take bits from each one, so long as you withdraw the required minimum amount. You can take more but it is taxed.

Stocks are on sale but you must be patient

Stocks represent ownership of a company. If you are patient, the value of what you own can grow significantly. Some stocks produce dividends (profits) that are taxable and some don’t. For instance, if you had purchased one share in Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway in each year since 1965, you would be a multimillionaire. You would own parts of 50 profitable companies. Each share is worth over $500,000. The value of your stocks grew at 20% a year on average but you had to be patient. (Annual report, p 3) You lost 48% of the value in 1974 but gained 129% in 2 years. Buffett does not pay dividends so you would have paid no taxes on this stock each year. You pay when you sell. However, you could borrow from your broker with stock as collateral if you needed quick money. The stock is down 10% —HALF of the broad market index decline YTD. There are many stocks that retain earnings (no dividends) so you have your choice of assets without paying tax on growth every year. You choose when to pay taxes.

Best Way to Withdraw From Your Retirement Accounts

When we retire we are faced with decisions that we should have planned before the day of retirement. Based on our goals for the future, we should have decided in advance which accounts to hit first, second and third. We should have already decided to transfer our tax-deferred accounts from our employer and former employers to one trustee—a mutual fund or brokerage. We should have already decided to take Social Security or wait to maximize our benefits. Some wait to their age 70 to receive almost double the amount at age 62. We should have already calculated our basic spending needs so that we would know we would use only the required minimum distribution not our Roth IRA or our individual securities. We should have already calculated how much tax we would pay on our RMD, Social Security and pension benefits. If we use fixed income assets like CDs and annuities, we may owe tax on these accumulations. You may have other issues and questions about the sequence of spending so a fixed-fee financial planner may be the best option at this time. A one-time fee is cheaper than 1-2% annual fee for 30 years.

You don’t need an advisor to accumulate a $1,000,000 fund

Saving and investing is not as hard as the financial industry makes it out to be. The folks who are successful in accumulation for retirement follow a few simple rules that they learned early, usually from their parents. Schools don’t teach basic investing. They teach how to open a bank account to spend a pay check. Employers can’t give us good advice since that makes them liable for our mistakes. Rule 1: start early—use your first employer’s tax advantaged plan. Rule 2: invest in low-cost stock index mutual funds inside a tax-deferred of tax-FREE account—use an IRA if your employer’s options cost more than 0.15%. Rule 3: invest the same amount each payday. Market timing and stock picking do not work over time. Rule 4: Cost is the best predictor of success. You can plan for retirement the correct way and have a $1 million when you need it.

Light is both a particle and a wave depending on how we look at the light.

I don’t think that there is any such thing as a position or a velocity of a particle.

Everything (galaxies to stones) in universe made of subatomic energy ‘vibrations’

A subatomic ‘particle’ is the smallest possible vibration (quantum) of a quantum field.

Mass–energy equivalence: E=mc^2.  At the smallest level; Everything is moving!

There is no TIME at this level because of force fields come and go in all directions.

Universe expanding: events may not come together like they did before.

Inside protons, neutrons, it is the fields of the virtual particles that creates its mass.

“Empty space is a boiling, bubbling brew of virtual particles that pop in and out of existence in a time scale so short that you can’t even measure them.” Space expanding.

The electricity we use comes from the field around the wire not from election itself.

Reduce taxes: 2019 IRA contributions by July 15

Reduce taxes: IRA contributions made by July 15
Since the filing deadline was extended to July 15, so was the 2019 IRA contribution deadline. We have more time to buy stocks on sale: $6,000 plus $1,000 for those over age 50 means less taxable income; less tax. Since stocks and funds are down 20% or more, we have a great way to add thousands of dollars to our LONG-TERM fund. Remember, only this asset class can beat inflation over time. Inflation can take up to HALF the purchasing power of our retirement dollars in 25 years. You may even increase your Savers Credit—a reduction in the actual tax owed. Another smart move: convert depressed IRA funds to Roth IRA funds. There is no longer any income limitations on Roth IRA conversions. Also this year your income may be lower since you are not forced to take RMDs. With smaller taxable incomes, you can convert more reduced IRA money and pay tax on a lower amount of income. We were able to slip into the 12% bracket from the 22% bracket this year and thus pay less for 2020 income. Also NJ does not tax SS benefits so we even saved on state taxes. A Roth IRA provides tax-FREE income later when taxes go up to pay for this $2 Trillion bailout.

Billionaires push unproven malaria drug that has killed
Job Creators Network is urging Trump to “CUT RED TAPE” and make an anti-malarial drug called hydroxychloroquine available for treating those sickened with the virus even though it has killed healthy people. Scientists have not tested it on virus patients. Despite this Trump endorsed the use of it and people have died. In Arizona, a couple who heard the president tout the drug ingested chloroquine phosphate — a chemical they’d used to treat their koi fish — mistakenly believing it would prevent COVID-19. The man died and his wife was hospitalized, according to NBC News. Several politicians have voiced the view that seniors should be sacrificed in order to get people back to work and save businesses. One thought leader volunteers ‘grandmas’ to die. Now ventilators are too expensive to make/buy Trump decides. In history, panic has caused mistakes that killed people by providing bad ‘cures.’ Because society elites have good health and access to superior medical care, they advocate their solutions for every person without thinking through the ‘collateral damage.’ If ‘back to work’ senior virus carriers handle your ‘Home Depot’ purchases, you are exposed. Trump ignores Italian-style deaths by promoting April 12 as deadline for back-to-work no matter the risk to actual people. Airlines have filed bankruptcies and kept working before. CEOs always got paid their bonuses. Now Trump and his Treasurer can pick the businesses they like to get a bailout.

Bad time to take money from your already depressed account
Under new Care Act, rules on 401(k) loans would also be relaxed, and some retirees would avoid so-called required minimum distribution, or RMD, rules that might have been onerous. One provision in the bill would let investors of any age take as much as $100,000 from retirement accounts this year without paying an early withdrawal penalty. They also could avoid taxes on the withdrawal if the money is put back in the account within three years. If it can’t be returned, taxes could be paid over three years. People diagnosed with the virus are eligible, along with anyone who “experiences adverse financial consequences” as a result of the pandemic, including an inability to find work or child care. Retirement plan sponsors are told to rely on employees’ word that they’re eligible. Taking money from your future is a hard decision. You not only sell shares at the worst time in 20 years but it will take twice as long—maybe another 20 years—to recoup that money. Besides you will lose the compound earnings during that loan time. Better to trade down your car or borrow from your bank. Like the Great Depression, these are the times that try our soils.

How Trump and tax-credit class hit Corona jackpot
The stimulus bill removes limits on the amount of losses that wealthy investors can use to offset taxes, by writing down the gradual depreciation of assets like real estate. Trump, Kushner and friends will have NO income taxes for years. Plus their accountants can go back to previous years and receive tax refunds. We will be paying Trump and friends for their losses. “There's a huge tax giveaway for people like him and his family in the stimulus package," said the nonprofit legal aid group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington in a tweet. So when you pay your taxes in the coming years you should think of all the money you are giving Trump, Kushner and all the real estate ‘developers’ out there. Trump is barred from the bailout, not his companies. They don’t even have to keep their employees on as other businesses have to for their jackpot. "To a certain degree the government is picking winners and losers in the stimulus bill and we will probably see it become even more political," one strategist said.

Are target-date funds the safest place for my retirement funds?
Unless you have millions of dollars or a Wall Street guru with a perfect record, you are safer in TDF than with a person who makes a living handling your money. An advisor, broker, agent, or money manager are those we traditionally look to when the markets crash. Most don’t save us from disaster. You may be a lucky person to have a sales person who sold your stocks before they went down. Only one or two actually predicted and executed a ‘safe’ sell-all strategy. TDF have the explicit strategy of investing for the long term. The good part is they don’t go down as far as some actively traded securities. They also don’t go up like the active traders claim their choices have. About 21% of retirement money is in TDF. 60% of new money went into TDF. Unless you have a crystal ball, there is no safer vehicle for your long term money. It is the simple and correct solution for most people saving for retirement. As Vanguard founder John Bogle said, you can't control the market, but you can control your investment fees. Paying just 2% a year to your salesperson mean you are giving HALF of your long-term accumulation away. And your salesperson is not always right!
Why did your ETF close and return money to you
72 ETFs with $1.4 billion in assets shut down and returned their money to investors in the first quarter. Many ETFs are really leveraged market-timing active funds which must act quickly to get out of the super-heated loans. Some use derivatives to amplify returns or losses of the securities they track. Since leveraged ETFs are specially created products designed for speculators, individuals who buy or trade them without understanding how they work should be extra cautious. Many leveraged ETFs are not structured like ordinary ETFs. And unless you know your ETF intimately you will get burned in volatile times. These ETF's shares are destined to lose money over time, a reality that is exacerbated by the fact that the portfolio rebalances daily. Due to compounding, leveraged ETFs held over the long term can see strikingly different returns than the fund's target. Because these funds reset each day, you can see significant losses—even if the fund itself appears to be showing a gain. These are a way to gamble without risking the dangers of directly employing margin debt. You can take the long side (bet that it will increase) or the short side (bet that it will decrease) as both have their own respective ticker symbols.

This is why rebalancing is not necessary
Markets have corrections, recessions and bad times. Selling and re-buying is not the best LONG-TERM strategy. New research by Campbell Harvey, Duke U, found that “investors need to understand that rote re-balancing is an active investment decision that increases risk. In an up market, you are selling soaring stocks; “all of a sudden your portfolio has done worse than if you had just let it run.” Re-balancing kills compounding. Almost every broker/advisor tells you to sell when your stocks are soaring and buy something else in order to maintain your 60/30/10 or 80/20 asset allocation. Transactions are their life. But Warren Buffett says: We continue to make more money when snoring than when active. Over time your portfolio of 50/50 stocks/bonds will maintain the growth and income you need to provide a sound lifelong return. For example: Vanguard Wellesley Income Fund has provided 9.5% annual returns since 1970. Corrections (rebalancing) were automatic and limited losses. Since 1970, 7 down markets have still produced over 10% for the S&P500. The market is now where it was Jan 2019.

Retirees NOT forced to sell shares for IRS

Retirees may NOT be forced to sell shares by IRS
Congress passed the $2 Trillion bailout bill that may allow retirees to stop selling shares to fulfill the RMD requirements of their retirement accounts. While this measure and others would allow savers to keep more of their savings, waiving the RMD for 2020, the House bill would work in favor of those who don’t need to live off of their IRA or 401(k) retirement funds. This would benefit those who are not living off their retirement nest eggs at the present time. The RMD is calculated on the previous December account balances for all those over 70.5 years of age. We must pay taxes on the gains that have been cut drastically by the C-19 market sell off. To reach the amount specified by our RMD, we would need to sell more shares than we would have had to a month ago. Waiving the RMD requirement for 2020 would reduce the tax revenue this year. Taxes will need to be increased in coming years to pay for the additional $2 Trillion spent by Congress.

My shares of stock and mutual funds are hanging on
I have increased my shares by NOT selling. The dividends I receive are adding more shares because the share price has fallen. Shares are on SALE. This is why Buffett is buying not selling. Buffett’s companies like Geico are still in business and collecting $ millions in premiums so he has $ billions to buy shares of Kroger, Delta, etc when the price is low for growing firms. Like Buffett I am buying stocks and shares of quality firms while they are on sale. They are on sale because of panic and the fact that some active mutual fund managers don’t want to end the quarter with a big loss. They will say they only lost 15% when the market index is down 25%. So they are selling at a loss which they can offset with some gains. I am not worried about my investment return number for the quarter. I am investing for future income and so when the price goes up, my shares will be worth more. And I will pay no taxes which will surely go up.

GOP uses the virus to give their “friends and family” more of our tax dollars
Did they forget the last time: Big and reckless businesses got bailed out, with no one going to jail, while ordinary Americans lost their homes and jobs? The virus is just an excuse. Some on the right are calling it an act of God--the better to justify their support of massive government spending. One White House official said Trump “doesn’t give a [expletive]” about the plan’s impact on the federal debt. “It’s all about the markets and the economy for him. It’s all about the jobs numbers.” Re-election is the prime driver. The Senate Republican plan to send every household $1,200 for each adult and $500 for every child is an inefficient and ineffective way to stabilize the economy. It’s also a cynical ploy by Mob Boss Trump and the GOP to buy the next election. The better strategy is to get money into the hands of cash-strapped businesses that promise to use it to keep workers on their payrolls. A better effort would be to make sure states can pay all the laid off workers who will need the essentials. Unemployment insurance can’t cover the estimated 80 million workers out of a full-time job. The last time we had millions of unemployed we did something about it: we made work for them. We built buildings, schools, dams and bridges. Dams not coal make electricity.

It took 4 years for the stock market index to recover from 2008 lows
Depending on your portfolio profile, it will take time to recover from this stock market correction. If you use the stock market as your checking or savings account, you will suffer when you sell. If however, you are a long-term investor, just turn your head from the daily gyrations and BUY like Buffett. Last year the stock market gained 31%. The long-term average is still 11%. If you pay your advisor 2% you will have to wait a longer time. If you think of your money in terms of short- and long-term reserves, this correction has no impact on your ultimate goals. John Bogle, founder of Vanguard, said that you can control what you pay for advice not control the market. Giving away 2% of your long-term money will decrease your final accumulation by up to 63%. “Over a 50-year investing lifetime, that little 2 percent fee will erode 63 percent of what you would have had. As Bogle puts it, “the tyranny of compounding costs” is overwhelming.”

Who got rich from the last bailout?
Your tax dollars are going to make many rich people richer. During the last bailout crisis, even the foreign banks and profitable firms got money they did not need. None of them said no. This time Boeing, which killed a lot of people from bad management, got BILLIONS of our money. The whole leisure class industry wants $ BILLIONS including The Boss’s hotels, golf resorts, and global properties. Most of those crying for bailouts had large surpluses from huge profits during the last 12-year bull market. They spent it on themselves—buybacks, CEO bonuses, more jets, etc. Remember, many of these firms have paid no taxes for years. Like The Boss, they have used every trick in the book to avoid paying their fair share. An unbiased analysis of this situation would be that America is a socialist country for the rich. We pay subsidies to profitable firms and have been doing so for decades. Subsidies to the elites is what American is all about. Even our Reps use info illegally. Lobbyists tell our Reps what to subsidize in return for election money. Why are we still providing oil, coal and gas subsidies to profitable companies? Trump pays farm/oil/gas companies when the market price falls. He promises agribusiness price guarantees and support payments to keep that group voting for him. The national debt has surged from $20 trillion to $23 trillion since Trump started. He promised to pay it all off. Instead he has made our tax yoke heavier in the future.
