Best advice I ever got: “Don’t use a broker/advisor”

Can Congress set a limit on credit card interest rates now at 29.99%?

My bill from Sears shows Citi charging 29.99% on my card balance. Of course I use other means to pay it off in full. But can’t Congress do better than let us be held captive at 30% interest? No one would ever be able to pay it off at min payment of $29 a month. Another card interest is set at 29.74% and my statement says it would take me 15 years and cost me FOUR times the balance to pay it off. I understand that our Congress people actually let the banks set these rates instead of our “representatives.” "Citibank actually drafted the legislation.'' It is no wonder that consumer debt is again overwhelming to most middle-income folks. The average rate is 24.25% and going up. New cars at $50,000 or more will take over 84 months to pay the loan off. These rates were high even before the Fed raised rates for borrowing. We consumers will never get ahead and maybe that is the intent of our Congress people.

Don’t Borrow Your Own 401k Money

Most people who do never get to pay it back and then they end up with less than $100,000 for 20 years of retirement. They lose one of the best savings programs available to working people. You are giving up the Miracle of Compounding on your money so that your $100,000 could have become over 700,000 over time. Even if you do pay yourself back you have lost the time it could have grown. You will never gain back the time. Most plans don’t let you increase your annual contributions so you never get ahead. Your plan will charge you interest plus the usual fee to process the loan. If you were earning 11% on your money and now you are paying 9% as loan interest you are losing the value of the plan. If you’re younger than 59 1/2, you’ll pay a 10% penalty for an early withdrawal from your 401k. You also get hit with taxes if you don’t pay off the loan in time. Some plans have complicated rules so please examine the fine print before using a loan. Finally, question the value of using up your future income. Explore other ways to find emergency funds: a HELOC, a bank loan, selling or hocking your antiques, or even getting family and friends to pitch in.

Best advice I ever got: “Don’t use a broker/advisor”

This came from my manager at my 2nd paying job—Assistant Director of a bureau of the NYC Health Department. He shared his Fidelity statement where he had his self-directed (no advisor) IRA. He kept contributing to it for over 5 years and had a balance over $200,000. He told me his account was earning over 29% a year for some time and so he didn’t need an advisor. I started investing right away. Later when the earnings of this Fidelity account returned to ‘normal’—under 10%—I moved my money to my brokerage account when I was hired as a manager there. I was assigned a broker and his advice almost cost me my previous earnings. I learned how a brokerage firm worked and soon moved my money to Vanguard after receiving my securities licenses. An account managed by an advisor can rob you of 63% of your long-term earnings. When I need advice about a financial matter, I use Vanguard’s unbiased salaried advisors. Since they don’t sell products, they have no incentive to “sell” any strategy. Later I learned that I am following Warren Buffett’s strategy and advice. Fee-only planners can help too.

Graduation gift that lasts a lifetime

Show your teen the easy way to be secure: a $ million tax-FREE fund. Make sure you teach your kids how to create wealth the easy way. My parents were not investors. At my first job, I had no clue which investment option to use for my 401k contribution and company match. The HR person told me to put it into the “safe” stable value fund. That was the worst choice at my age I learned later when I got my securities licenses and MBA. If I had followed their advice I would have ended up with about $150,000 instead of a Wealth Reserve of $877,233 about 33 years later. I have used this 'Wealth Reserve' as I call it to have funds to buy low-cost insurance, to help buy two homes and 5 cars with higher down payments or cash, and now to receive $2,900 a month in retirement supplement. Now your child can build an account that provides tax-FREE education and retirement income too. The stock market provides 11% a year over time: double your money every 7-9 years. Only buy and hold works; timing market is for broker fees.

Time is on their side: https://www.amazon.com/Give-your-child-leg-up-manage/dp/1096505355

Investors Not Seeing Value in Advisor Advice

A new Morningstar study found participants rated advisors “as providing similar value to investment or trading platforms and only slightly above financial media.” The only high value listed was the value of reaching investors about management risk: “advisors are personalizing the risk experience for them in a very tangible manner.” Advisors may monitor risk and reward to keep them in line with an investor’s goals and risk tolerance.” However this can mean an adjustment may not be needed for years in order to coincide with years to retirement dates and maturity. Since most investors are not gamblers, speculators or traders, paying an advisor 1-2% of total portfolio value every year seems like a very high cost to bear? One estimate of life-time advisor fees is giving up “63 percent of what you would have had.”

Rely on Buffett’s advice instead: https://www.amazon.com/Warren-Buffetts-Vanguard-Funds-Retirement/dp/1496148592

Fidelity study of best investment strategy shows “buy and hold”

The best investment results long-term were accounts where the owner was dead or forgot they owned the account. "Fidelity had done a study as to which accounts had done the best at Fidelity. And what they found was..." Ritholtz: "They were dead." O'Shaughnessy: "...No, that's close though! They were the accounts of people who forgot they had an account at Fidelity." Despite countless studies and proofs, most investors and their brokers want to “keep on top of their money.” Our emotions are hurting us when it comes to investment decisions. Of course, it doesn’t help that brokers and advisors only make money by “managing” our account. Even master investor Warren Buffett used “buy and hold” strategy to win a $ million bet from a stock picker using 5 different strategies. His annual report stated that “We continue to make more money when snoring than when active.” (berkshirehathaway.com/letters/1996)

Can ChatGPT Predict How Stocks Will Perform?

Without a long-term test, some headlines are claiming this new AI ChatGPT can predict stock performance. The financial industry has claimed their formulas and research can predict stock success for over a century. That is why people pay stock pickers but few succeed. A ChatGPT study looked at headlines about companies for a year and claimed ChatGPT could predict correctly on “daily stock market returns, but it actually outperformed traditional sentiment analysis methods.” In the past when every Wall Street firm started using the same strategy, it disappeared. But unless you are a day trader with lots of cash, you are not likely to succeed with this new claim over time. Better chance of succeeding comes from Buffett: “... a virtually cost-free investment in an unmanaged S&P 500 index fund – would, over time, deliver better results than those achieved by most investment professionals...” Warren Buffett's astonishing statement comes from his recent bet. He offered $1 million to five of Wall Street's investment geniuses and he beat them with a low-cost stock market index fund from Vanguard. He cites the power of compound interest as a secret to his great returns of over 20%.

Which kind of investor are YOU?

This is the most important question to answer before you start giving your hard-earned cash to some stranger. The answer and the strategy that follows from your answer will determine whether you are successful. Why? Because your answer tells you whether to follow the market’s ups and downs or to ignore everyday changes and expect an exceptional outcome later. There are basically two kinds of investors: short-term speculators and long-term co-owners of businesses. Speculators are really gamblers who bet their money on a “sure thing” security tip from a broker/advisor or a family/friend. Gambling is fun if you are prepared to lose your entire bet. If you have the maturity to only bet a small part of your total savings, then you are paying for entertainment. On the other hand, if you are buying and holding shares in a company stock or mutual fund that owns securities, you are participating in their successes. You are guaranteed to do better than the speculators. Because you are not buying and selling, you benefit from the Miracle of Compounding. Companies’ shares grow in price AND the reinvested dividends get multiplied. A $250 a month investment ($3,000 a year) grows to about $1.6 million in 40 years. You contributed $120,000 over time and succeeded with over a million dollars. Since no broker/advisor has ever beaten a low-cost market index over time, you want to avoid giving the bulk of your money to salespeople.

Our Universe is Mind-Blowing

Light is both a particle and a wave depending on how we look at the light.

I don’t think that there is any such thing as a position or a velocity of a particle.

Everything (galaxies to stones) in universe made of subatomic energy ‘vibrations’

A subatomic ‘particle’ is the smallest possible vibration (quantum) of a quantum field.

Will Biden’s tax increase on capital gains hurt or help you?

Are you paying too much for your 401k or 403b at work?

Most employers keep the fees hidden so many working people have no idea. Some think their pension plan is free. Larger employers must keep fees low since many have been sued for charging excessive fees and kickbacks to themselves. However, if you are working for a small or non-profit employer, you are probably being scalped. Depending on which investment option you have chosen in your plan, you could be losing money. Fixed (no loss) investments like stable value funds may earn 2% or less. If inflation is 2% as it is now, you are losing money. Worse, some non-profits offer pension plans run by insurance agents. My wife was losing money in her tax-deferred annuity plan and was charged a surrender fee when she tried to transfer it to a low-cost provider. Many plan participants are urged to invest conservatively when hired so their life-time nest egg hardly grows at all. You may end up with less than $200,000 instead of accumulating $500,000. John Bogle, founder of Vanguard, said “the tyranny of compounding costs” is overwhelming. You may be giving up 63% “of what you would have had.” If your contributions are matched by your boss, this may overcome the high costs. Otherwise you are better off using the IRS-approved tax-FREE account.

Pay less; earn more: https://www.amazon.com/Robbing-You-Blind-401k-fees/dp/1493588966

Why is it critical to start investing as early as possible?

Why are the rich getting richer during this time when so many don’t even make the minimum wage? Part of the answer comes from the idea of compound interest. Warren Buffett swears by compounding: “MY WEALTH HAS COME FROM A COMBINATION OF LIVING IN AMERICA, SOME LUCKY GENES, AND COMPOUND INTEREST.” For those of us who invest in order to have enough money for retirement, time is critical. Buy buying the stock of profitable companies, we can earn about 11% a year over time. The stock provides dividends which buy more stock. Because of profits, each share is valued at a higher level each year. These two combine to make the value of our money double in about 7 years. If we invested $9 a day for 40 years starting at age 20, our account would show $2.1 million. If we waited to start investing until age 40, it would cost $82 a day to reach that amount. Time investing takes the place of cash. The rich who already have $2.1 million at age 60 might have $4 million by age 70. If they had $4 million at the beginning of 2020 when they lost their jobs, they would have over $5 million now just by holding on to their low-cost stock index fund that increased by 45%.

Follow Buffett’s advice: https://www.amazon.com/Warren-Buffetts-Vanguard-Funds-Retirement/dp/1496148592

Will Biden’s tax increase on capital gains hurt or help you?

This question will come to you during the next year. Consider this: the rich don’t live on wages that are taxed like we do. Many use family money to buy assets like commercial buildings. As the assets appreciate, there are no taxes on the rents. There are loans. The loan interest is paid by the rents. The loans finance the lifestyles of the rich—homes, cars, planes, servants, etc. The loan proceeds are not taxable. They actually get an interest deduction on the money they live on. To buy a bigger building, they don’t pay tax on the sale like you would because the IRS thinks the new building is just an exchange. Some like Mr Romney set up partnerships offshore so the lower taxes paid by the partnership actually offset taxes owed on other income. He also exploited the IRA rules to delay taxation on the gains from the companies he launched at Bain. The wealthy pay less than HALF the taxes we pay. The rich use gifts to charities they create or control to offset income also. The wealthy employ professional tax advisors to reduce/eliminate their income and capital gains taxes. Some use offshore tax havens to avoid the taxes we pay. If you don’t have capital and profits, Biden’s taxes may reduce all our tax increases.

Reduce your taxes legally: https://www.amazon.com/Tax-Free-Living-2012-strategies-build/dp/1477452702

Is getting paid to move your 401k right for you?

Some financial service firms will pay you up to $3,000 to move your pension to their self-directed IRA. Why do you think? Good will? Charity? No, it is because they want you to pay their fees for the rest of your life and beyond. However, read the small print—you have to let them hold your $1.5 mil to get $3,000. Such a deal! Over the next 30 years of your retirement, you may pay them 1-2% which will be over $100,000 for an average size 401k. One of my readers shared his story: $500,000 IRA rollover which costs 1% a year over 20 years in retirement equals $100,000 in fees he gave up to his advisor. I helped him transfer his money to a low-cost provider which cost him $2,000 a year not $5,000 a year. Consider better options for you not your advisor.

https://www.amazon.com/Best-Robo-Advisor-Ultimate-Automatic-Management/dp/1537111957/

Best stocks to own for the coming years

When you look at your most recent investment statement you should be delighted. The stock market is up 45% for 1 year; 17% for 5 years; and 14% for 10 years. The long-term average is 11% before your advisor’s charges and fees. My readers are telling me that they are buying more Apple, Amazon, Facebook, Google, JPMorgan, Visa, Home Depot, and other large companies. They are avoiding crypto for now. They want to continue to enjoy the benefits of an expanding economy and they feel unsure about new trends. Most of my readers are investing for the long-term—retirement or retirement income for their future 20 or 30 years. Most of them are not fast traders. They take their IRS-required minimum distributions by withdrawing dividends and selling shares across the entire portfolio. They don’t know which stock to hold. The future of each stock price is unknown. They are planning to live to age 100.

Is a 529 college savings plan right for you?

If your state does not match the Fed’s deductibility feature, you can open any state 529 plan. You pay no taxes on the earnings in your plan. You can open multiple 529 plans, and you can roll over your funds from one into another 529 plan once every rolling 12 months. Check the Morningstar Top 529 College Savings Plan Rankings. Utah and Michigan are top plans and pay bonuses. You can accumulate more in your plan by opening the account yourself—brokers take fees annually. You can set up the plan even before you or your adult children have a child. There are many options if the plan is not tapped right away for education for the intended person. Eventually, if you or someone else does not use the funds for an education, the plan is like an IRA—tax on earnings and 10% penalty. So you could use the plan to grow funds tax-deferred if you have maxed out your IRAs. Check options to pay for college: https://www.amazon.com/Education-Funding-Save-right-plan/dp/1482549956/

Minimize taxes on your retirement income

You found out that Social Security benefits are taxed—up to 85% of that income could cause you to hit the next tax bracket. A little planning can help you control when you are taxed on income in retirement. Unless you are really wealthy and can put most of your nest egg in tax-FREE municipal bonds paying 1%, you need a little knowledge to avoid the worst. The premium for the Medicare Part B program goes up at different income levels. If you try a Roth IRA conversion, you could trigger higher taxes on other income. Capital gains taxes are increased for higher income years. Reducing future IRA withdrawals (RMD) may be possible with a qualified charitable distributions QCD processed from your IRA. Control taxes: https://www.amazon.com/What-your-RMD-much-spend/dp/1718946716

Why smart investors do NOT sell high; buy low

Why smart investors do NOT sell high; buy low
Every time we have a severe correction like 2007-08 or 2020, investors have to re-learn the lesson of the sages: Don’t time the markets. Over the past 71 years, there have been 13 bear markets, lasting an average of 13 months, with declines averaging 25.8% before markets recovered. By contrast, the 14 bull markets since 1949 have been longer and have had disproportionate gains, lasting an average of 48 months and gaining an average of 129.0%. A $10,000 investment in the S&P 500 Index in 2004 would have grown to $36,418 by December 31, 2019, despite the 51% downturn of 2008–2009. Returns for other periods may have been less favorable and that other market segments may not have recovered from this downturn. As the Putnam chart shows, if you had timed the market and missed 30 or 40 best days, you would have lost money. Smart investors look at similar charts when they get the itch to sell. No one can predict the future!

25% of us are using our future money for today’s needs
Many Americans are raiding their retirement accounts to pay for basic necessities, including groceries and rent. Over the last two months, the average withdrawal from retirement accounts was $6,757. Half of Americans who were recently furloughed or let go have saved less than $500 for retirement in the past year — and 70% have saved less than $1,000, according to SimplyWise. Of those who have an individual retirement account, 401(k) plan or retirement savings account, 1 in 5 now plan to tap those funds. It is difficult to find other ways to buy food and pay rent, especially since Congress let us take the money without penalty. But if a job loss or severe economic trouble goes on for month after month, we could be devastated. Like the Great Depression, we may be standing on food pantry lines sooner that we think.

Recover your retirement fund
The stock market has risen to the level of last August. If you did not sell, you may be able to meet your goals and timeline. No one can predict the future based on the past because we have never been through this kind of condition before. Plus, no advisor can predict the future anyway. Since nobody knows when the market will recover and refill your retirement fund, it is best to do nothing. Warren Buffett, expert unbiased advisor, says "The stock market is a device for transferring money from the impatient to the patient." We make mistakes when we are in a hurry. No advisor can tell you which investment to buy now to help you recoup your lost ground quickly. Quick gains are for gamblers who are willing to lose or who can’t control their emotions. We can concentrate on what we can control—cutting expenses, building emergency funds, looking for a new job—not on conditions we can’t control.

Women need a Wealth Reserve
Women generate just 83% of the retirement income men do. That’s $47,244, 17% less than the median household income for men ($57,144). To make it worse, women live longer than men so they need more, not less. You and your family can solve this mismatch by creating a special tax-FREE account I call your “Wealth Reserve.” Before and after you retire, build funds in your tax-FREE account. Only earned income can be contributed to this account at first. However, if you don’t work but your spouse does work, you can still invest in this account. You can contribute up to $6,000; if you're age 50 or over, it is $7,000. You can withdraw your funds tax-free. In retirement, you can let your money grow tax-FREE while you take money from your pension and other accounts. You can add to this account even after the wage earners retire. You and your family can make sure you have enough even as you live longer. Plus there will be no income taxes due on your long-term accumulations. This could save you 22% in taxes.

Is a reverse mortgage right for you?
Reverse mortgages allow you to spend down your home’s equity even while you continue to live in it, then pay the money back when you move out, often from the proceeds of a home sale. Last year more than 30,000 Americans borrowed against their homes in this way. During the last recession, some borrowers fell victim to high fees and questionable marketing tactics. Reverse mortgages are generally structured so the homeowner gets a monthly payment for as long as they live in the house. The loan comes due after the homeowner dies or moves out of the house. At this point, the loan will need to be repaid — which might mean selling the home in order to come up with the funds. The one you’re most likely to encounter is a federally-insured home equity conversion mortgage, or HECM. Most reverse mortgages have variable interest rates which may cause cash problems in the future. Go to a HUD-approved housing counseling agency and look for agencies specifically approved to provide reverse mortgage counseling. Although reverse mortgages may help you stay in your home longer, they aren’t cheap.
Plus all the maintenance, taxes and fees continue. As always with mortgages, it pays to shop around, getting quotes from at least three lenders, to make sure you get the best possible deal.

Where do retirees keep their money?
There are many advisors who tell clients to use bond interest for retirement income. After all, fixed bond coupons paying 6-8% were ‘safe’ and guaranteed a fixed income compared to stocks. Recently, low interest returns have dominated the economy so this may not be good advice any longer. With the advent of Target-Date Retirement funds, some retirees have discovered balanced funds that manage stocks and bonds over time automatically. Some retirees have relied on balanced funds like Vanguard Wellesley Income fund for many retirement years—providing 9% returns since 1970. Some retirees and pre-retirees are taking note of the current tax rates and lack of forced sales for RMDs to move more IRA money to Roth IRA accounts. Later if taxes go up to pay for this pandemic event, they can use tax-FREE money to reduce their total tax expenses.

How Congress people make money with their ‘crystal ball’
Yes, there is a law against insider-trading, even for the wealthy and the connected. But law enforcement doesn’t go after Congress people who have intelligence reports we don’t see. They get away with it. They have their own system so they make sure few get punished. Plus, Congress people are rich enough to have ‘third party’ people (trustee) to trade on their behalf with the information. Take Rep. Phil Roe. He purchased stock in Zoom, the teleconferencing company, and Moderna, a company developing a vaccine, while dumping shares of Royal Caribbean Cruises and Disney. As markets crashed around the globe in early March, the ‘representative’ sold nearly 100 stocks over a two-day period. A spokesman said Roe does not personally manage his investments. So it is just luck that Roe’s trustee makes trades on the basis of knowing what is coming? Roe makes $ millions and so does his trustee. We are not fooled.

Another way the wealthy takes our tax money
Trump and the GOP have provided another perk for the wealthy. Wealthy financial advisors keep our tax money (‘loan’ for employee salaries): big bonus. One firm, Lakeview Capital Partners, an Atlanta-based registered investment advisor with about $3.3 billion in assets under management, was the latest firm to disclose it received a Paycheck Protection Program loan from US. Do financial advisory firms which are already wealthy and receive about $33 million in annual fees ($3.3 Billion at 1% fee rate) really deserve $581,000 of our tax money? Lakeview is planning to keep the money under the ‘forgiveness’ regs. One critic: “these firms have to be in the position of dealing with bear markets,” he said. ”they know they don’t need the money. They know the loan was intended for small businesses like restaurants where they need to keep employees employed. It was not meant to be an indirect windfall for [advisors] RIAs.”
