Where did your advisor leave you?

Great savings ideas to beat inflation

The Feds tell us that reducing inflation is harder than running it up so let’s get ready for the long haul. My grocer has not shown signs of reducing their markups in everything. My house-brand can of French cut beans went from 68 cents to 99 cents in one week this spring. As with drugs and other commodities, the middle persons are probably making the extra 31 cents. I don’t think the farmers or pickers got much of the increase. We save by using the house brand for all things. You could move to a cheaper town if you find a job. For car and home insurance, we save by raising our deductible since most risks have a low probability. Some of us save by going directly to the manufacturer to buy our coverage and our needs. Since this is not always the case, you must shop and buy only what you need. The largest potential savings comes from ending credit card debt fast: my card charges 29.99% (mob rates) if I don’t pay the monthly balance on time. One of the largest savings has come to folks who gave up on their broker/advisor and go directly to Vanguard. Vanguard is unique since the firm itself is owned by its own users. It is responsible for the largest savings for many of my readers—saving 1-2% of a portfolio over time is hard to beat. Avoid $10,000 or more EVERY year for an advisor. Some readers pay a one-time fee for planning advice. In order to save a lot, you will need to go through your expenses item by item.

Where did your advisor leave you?

Buffett bought more energy stocks as the market fell this year. If you are a long term investor you can weather the storm. Buffett has been through this all before. What is his answer: buy when stocks are on sale. This makes sense but this is one of the hardest things to do when stock prices fall. World's greatest investor's retirement advice: Avoid “high-fee managers.” Retirement income for life from 2 Vanguard funds he recommends. Warren Buffett's will provides for his family by directing that his cash assets be invested in just two Vanguard funds: One will provide cash for the coming year and the other will provide a sound future. The best way to protect your family's future is to be invested in the stock market. Pure and simple. When you have stock assets, your money compounds at higher rates when your account fees are 0.01-0.05%, not the retail rates of 1.5-3%. You don't have to settle for retail products that are structured to provide the middle person, Wall Street with higher revenues. The average investor earns just 3.79%, not the 10-12% market rates. (QAIB) Don’t be an average advisor funding machine.

Alternatives to high college costs

A trade could pay better and cost less to succeed. An electrician can make $131-215K and work at a brewery. The electrician that came to our home charged $200 just to visit. The Sears-affiliated service tech took us for $750 to fix our washer. My relative is a traveling nurse and gets to see the world free while earning up to $4,900 a week. If you have no intension of running up student loans, fortunately some corporations actually pay for your training too. If a trade is not right for you, what about dealing with people? Many jobs pay very well if you must deal with ornery customers. My first job was electrician helper during the summer and I made more than my father. More companies are giving jobs to robots so time is running out.

Top investments for taxable accounts

We can’t control how the markets behave or the rate of inflation, but we can manage taxes. Your advisor may not consider the taxes you will have to pay when they suggest a strategy or a security. But taxes can substantially reduce your income especially over time. If your current income is under $100,000, you are better off paying tax now and investing in a tax-FREE account. Long-term, your savings can be huge. Investing $250 a month during your working years can provide $1,000,000+ and it can all be tax-FREE. This account can also save you paying income taxes on dividends and interest annually as you would on mutual funds and securities that throw off dividends and interest every year. Further, you do not need to pay taxes on securities with huge capital gains until you want to use the money. Stocks like Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway pay no dividends so there are no taxes to pay until you sell.

How to get back on track for retirement income

So after 3 years of destruction in savings: Covid, layoffs, inflation, moving, quitting, starting a new job— whatever, how you get back to your goal of having enough income for retirement. Assess: what do you need to do; reset your goals. You can still catch up but you need to stick with a serious commitment. Love the stock market: stocks can provide over 10% return per year. No other security can do that. In most market downturns, the total return over 10-15 years provides enough time to recover your loses. So dips in 2020 were overcome in 2022 and dips in 2009 were past over in 2012. Putting your nest egg in the CD deep freeze will kill the growth of an incubator. You may have to work another year before ‘retiring.’ Most people keep working even part time in order to satisfy financial and social needs. You need to understand what “retirement” time has become. Many folks are living longer and thus the old way of living on municipal bonds and CD interest is not appropriate. Many retirees used to fear financial risk and maintained a hording attitude near retirement. However, since you or your partner may live to age 100, you need to make a new plan. Risk is controlled; not feared. With income and expenses planned out, 75 is the new 65.

Double your investing to catch up. https://www.amazon.com/Reset-Your-Retirement-Income-retirement/dp/1512304344

How much does retirement cost?

How much does retirement cost?
How do average working people afford to live in retirement? Two-salaried clients— school teacher and office manager—making on average $60,000 during their whole careers, earned enough to have a $1.2 million retirement fund--$40,000/year. How did they do it? Bought 2 used cars every 4-5 years. They invested 5-8% of their checks in stock index funds inside tax-deferred accounts at work and their own deductible IRAs. Bought house 40 years ago $200,000; now worth $700,000. Camping/hiking vacations. Eat out once a month. Did their own home cleaning, repair or maintenance. Bought food, clothes, toys, etc on sale or house brand. Paid for 2 master’s degrees (no scholarship) and a child’s private college degree. Covered 3 lay off periods; bankrupt once. Saved $3-4,000 a year on securities and insurance. One took SS benes at 62; one at 70. Gross income now: $90,000—SS, pension, investments.

Supremes give wealthy another way to avoid our taxes
Progressive tax rates at federal and state levels are meant to reduce the gap between us and the tax-shelter class that evades taxes. Taxes were meant to avoid another Robber Baron period. Now the Supreme Court has decided the wealthy were paying too much state tax. Now we will be forced to pay more to make up for the shortfall created because states can’t tax income from wealthy trusts. The rich can now move their trusts and avoid income tax for beneficiaries’ trust. The Supreme Court has essentially opened the door to trust planning that could ‘avoid state taxation altogether.’ Plus they can now avoid an audit when they move to a low-tax state. We, who are left, pay more state taxes.

DIY Financial Independence: Freedom Workbook
Put your money to work so you don’t have to.
Use your IRS-approved tax shelter—Pay 0% on asset gains.
Accumulate $250,000, $500,000 even $1,000,000 tax-FREE. You achieve Financial Independence by having enough money to do what you want. When you don't have to rely on work to survive, you are financially independent. Playing it safe won't achieve it. You don't have to be super wealthy to become free of money worries. Financially independent people have one thing in common: they put their money to work so they don't have to. If you don't put your money to work, you will never be free.   'Compound interest' is the name of the process by which money makes money. You don't need to do a thing besides sending $250 to work every month. You earn money every time you buy things. You own part of the businesses. Compounding is what Warren Buffett counts on for success.
“My wealth has come from a combination of living in America, some lucky genes, and
compound interest.
How much can your money earn for you? It depends on how long it works and where you put it to work. The best strategy is to use your Wealth Reserve to shield your money while it works in places you shop. You can use a special IRS-approved Tax-FREE account to avoid all tax on investment dividends, earnings and interest. You can also avoid the fees and commissions on this account. Your $250 a month investment may grow to $1,000,000 or more and it is all tax FREE. That $3,000 a year for 33 years ($99,000) compounds to $1 million if you put it to work: capitalism.

Trump’s medical price stability promise is dead
The health care companies have killed any chance for giving US a break. It is impossible to shop and compare prices even for a simple standard item. There are hidden costs in every procedure even if you knew the contract price between you doctor and the hospital. Those who argue that when we have ‘transparency’ we will shop and save are overlooking the conflict of interest of the sellers. I can’t tell my doctor to use the hospital or center where I found the lowest cost. I don’t trust the doctors who work at that center and vice versa. The doctor and the center are NOT on my side in this deal. Doctors make special deals with centers in their best interest, NOT mine. Like sales people, doctors make more by doing more volume with this center vs that center. Like my broker, they get paid more by selling one firm’s product over another. Or take a simple blood test. The median retail price in one place is $20 while the same test costs $443 in another. And what about life-saving insulin, up 1,700%? I can’t shop in India or China for insulin!

What can an annuity do for your retirement?
Congress wants to let the financial industry make a killing on annuity sales to retirees. Is this good for US as we retire at 10,000 per day? An annuity is a steady income for your lifetime. Insurers buy bonds with your money and dole it out to you monthly over time. You will receive less in buying power over time. Inflation takes HALF the value in 20 years. Insurers earn 1-3% depending on the type you buy. You receive a good deal if you live to be over 90. If you die before age 85, you lose. However, if you don’t feel comfortable using a 0.23% balanced (stock/bond) fund and having the fund firm send you a monthly check, this may be your best deal. A balanced fund earning over 8% a year can beat inflation over time. You keep your buying power and have a legacy too.

What are the options to save for college?
A tax-advantaged account called ‘529’ is available through any financial firm. What are the alternatives to a 2% savings account? Investment options range from all stock to all bonds. The middle road, overweighted to bonds, seems to work best for the 15-20 year average time to accumulate. Some plans offer age-based options. Some states provide a tax deduction. Some plans are sold direct without commissions and some cost you more. Many states allow anyone to use their plan. Some states offer low-cost management. Usually you can invest whatever amount you like but $100 a month for 15 years could provide over $40,000 for school for young and old—any educational purpose.

Give your child a leg up with money
Make sure you teach your kids how to create wealth the easy way. At my first job, I had no clue which investment option to use for my 401k contribution and company match. The HR person told me to put it into the 'safe' stable value fund. That was the worst choice at my age I learned later when I got my securities licenses. If I had followed their advice I would have ended up with $150,000 instead of a Wealth Reserve of $877,233 about 33 years later. We have used this 'Wealth Reserve' as I call it to have funds to buy low-cost insurance, two homes and 5 cars with higher down payments or cash. Now we receive $2,500 a monthly in retirement supplement.
I found the advice of the smartest money manager of our time--Warren Buffett--is the best. It turns out his simple investing plan is best. Buffett: Panic is buy signal.

GOP tax plan failed to END subsidies and loopholes to the special interests

GOP tax plan failed to END subsidies and loopholes to the special interests
GOP promise to ‘reform’ tax code in A Better Way. Speaker Ryan wrote:;;
“The tax code is littered with hundreds of preferences and subsidies that pick winners and losers and create complexity. Instead of free-market competition that rewards success, our tax code directs resources to politically favored interests, creating a drag on economic growth and job creation. In fact, Washington encourages individuals and businesses to make investment decisions based not on the most promising new technologies and innovations, but instead on the promise of tax savings. Many of these tax preferences, sometimes referred to as “tax expenditures,” are special-interest giveaways that are masked as tax breaks instead of direct grants. For fiscal year 2016, such “spending” through the tax code amounts to more than $1.4 trillion, or almost three-fourths of the amount of revenue raised by the entire Federal income tax. When Washington picks winners and losers with the tax code, the American people ultimately pay higher tax rates and keep less of their hard-earned money.”
Starve special interests by using the code for Tax-FREE retirement: https://www.amazon.com/Tax-FREE-Retirement-code-lifetime-income/dp/1475206976

Congress tax ‘reform’ lowered tax rate but kept subsidies for profitable companies.
HALF of Americans will see taxes raised to pay for subsides and loopholes
GOP tax ‘reform’ means lowering the rate to 20% AND increasing their subsidy. We currently subsidize the oil industry by as much as $4.8 billion a year, with about half of that going to the big five oil companies—ExxonMobil, Shell, Chevron, BP, Conoco Phillips—which get an average tax break of $3.34 on every barrel of domestic crude they produce. But they are already profitable at $100 a barrel so why the subsidy. We taxpayers have been paying them a subsidy to drill since 1916. They don’t need the subsidy and depletion allowance anymore but our ‘reps’ depend on their money to get elected so the Congress does not repeal subsidies in the ‘reform’ bills.
Oil is not alone: gas, coal, cotton, Corn, Wheat, Soybeans, Rice, Beer, Milk, Beef, Peanut Butter, etc
Special interests won! NO subsidies/loopholes repealed! Tax shelters left open!
GOP repealed NONE of the 1,833 business subsidies. GOP repealed 32 deductions used by middle class. Apple and 500 corporations can leave their $2 TRILLION profits UN-taxed overseas. They also get to keep their subsidies and loopholes and foreign cash reserves we still pay for. They were NOT repealed. 1,833 large companies have received federal grants and/or tax credits worth $17.8 Trillion. Instead of giving our money to firms and people that are already making money, we could pay down the debt, which used to worry the GOP. Since our tax cuts are reversed in 2025, you need a shelter.

There is just one way left for us to avoid paying for corporate and wealthy tax breaks
The GOP has just one ‘corporate subsidy’ repeal in the ‘reform’ bill—“marginal oil and gas wells.” All significant corporate and tax shelters were left in tact. Trump’s mob, Commerce Sec Ross, State Dept. Tillerson, advisor Cohn, Treasury Mnuchin, Fed v-chair Quarles, and Ambassador Jon Huntsman hide their money in various shelters under fake firms/names. The new report says they hide their money in the Cayman Islands. Apple hides its money in the tiny island of Jersey. What can we do to avoid paying for these subsidies and business tax credits? You and I do NOT have to hide our money in a foreign country. We do NOT have to hire a lawyer to create fake firms and names. You and I have a legal tax shelter here with an IRS Sec. 408 Trust.
Avoid paying for their tax breaks with your legal tax shelter: https://www.amazon.com/Create-Your-Tax-FREE-Financial-System/dp/1466367466

ONE THIRD of us will have higher taxes in 10 years to cover this ‘tax cut’
The Tax Policy Center ran the numbers. By 2027, 31% of middle-class filers would see tax hikes. Repealing the Alt. Minimum Tax created by GOP so the rich pay something means the burden will shift to those making between $48,600 and $86,100. GOP has rigged the tax ‘reform’ to trick us into giving them HUGE extra money for their tax shelters. GOP budget has big cuts in funding for Medicare and Medicaid in our future. Hidden in the budget they just passed are cuts of $4 Trillion in spending including nearly $500 billion in cuts to Medicare and $1 trillion to Medicaid. This means that in a few years, you and I will need to pay more for a relatives’ nursing home and our own health care. Plus our taxes go back up. Treasury Mnuchin says our tax cuts end while corporate cuts are permanent. You and I need a tax shelter like the Trump class.

Younger singles go for Bronze ObamaCare for less
If your employer does not offer care, you may save by using ObamaCare, ACA, HealthCare.gov same. Employers usually require you to pay—some take over $6,000 from your pay for some plans. If you have no health issues but still need catastrophic care for an accident or illness, you may find exactly what you need at HealthCare.gov. Subsidies for the monthly premium are available to those with incomes of $45,000 and so the only expense may be the deductible. If you anticipate no health expenses, your annual outlay could be tiny. Open enrollment for 2018 ends this Dec. 15. 2.3 million have signed just in 18 days—more than when Obama was prez. Congress is unlikely to fix it by 2018, an election year. Get help: https://localhelp.healthcare.gov/#/

Most rich people would rather have better infrastructure than less tax
When you are already wealthy, you have fulfilled your desires and your relative position in the community hierarchy does not change when everyone gets a tax break. KS cut in taxes recently (and then a reversal) proved that cuts don’t produce growth. They just mean schools are worse, roads aren’t repaired, water pipes, power lines, other utilities are not fixed, and the quality of life falls. Granted that some tax money is wasted and governments are subject to corruption. However, rich people can’t live on special things alone. Their Rolls won’t last long on potholed streets. But not every American wants to live in a company town like Wichita with the Koch ‘blessings.’ In fact, most Americans think this tax cut is wrong at this time. The wealthy donors that keep our ‘reps’ in champagne like it. The rich have always had legal ways to cut taxes without the IRS. Corporations have thousands of ways to cut taxes now—shelters, fake subsidies, global addresses, tax lawyers, and lobbyists for Congress. Congress could do better for all working people. Corporations don’t even plan to expand the economy.

Overpaying for car insurance can cost $640,000 over time
65% of us overpay for coverage. If we save the average of $500 a year by purchasing the right policy and taking our discounts, we could have an extra $640,000 by the time we retire. Most people have coverage for at least 50 years. For 40 years, our $1000 savings could grow to $530,000. Investing that $500 a year in a low-cost stock index fund uses the Miracle of Compounding over time. It is just math: https://www.amazon.com/Miracle-Compounding-Turn-day-into/dp/1470176513. Make sure you shop to avoid high premiums: https://www.amazon.com/Vehicle-Insurance-Beware-Double-Coverage/dp/1480027634

Trump and GOP are promising higher wages from corporate tax cut
“The hourly wages of high-wage workers rose 41 percent in the 34-year period between 1979 and 2013; the hourly wages of middle-wage workers grew 6 percent in that time frame, and the wages of low-wage workers fell 5 percent” according to the Economic Policy Institute. We did NOT see a bump in wages when Bush II cut taxes. Why would a company use its added cash to pay us more when we have been taking less since the 70s? They don’t use their subsidies to pay more wages, why would they use cash? Wouldn’t you keep it in a shelter or pay your own executives and investors more if you were in charge? Since the firms have money why would they invest the cuts in new operations? They haven’t and won’t. Fed revenue from corporate taxes has fallen while our taxes for Social Security and Medicare have ballooned. Our taxes are low compared to the world.
NO Don, this is NOT a middle class tax cut: https://www.amazon.com/Only-little-people-pay-taxes/dp/1478222441

Where is the best place to save for your kids’ college tax-FREE?
Morningstar, the fund-rating service, has upgraded its rankings on six 529 college-savings plans and downgraded three others, the research firm announced Tuesday.
Bright Start College Savings of Illinois received the gold ranking. The other gold programs—Invest529 of Virginia, the Vanguard 529 College Savings Plan of Nevada and the Utah Educational Savings Plan—remained unchanged from last year. Among the downgrades, Franklin Templeton 529 College Savings Plan of New Jersey sank the lowest, dropping from neutral to negative because of its uncompetitive fees and sudden declines in equity exposure that leave it open to market-timing risk, Morningstar said.

Can 13 women be wrong: The Don’s ‘women are very special’ Groping genitals ‘special’

My Theory on Trump/Putin ‘love’:
Trump got Russian help/funding for business from business/mob ties to Putin. US banks not interested in more bankruptcies. No one expected him to win so no harm getting Putin help. Don owes Vlad’s mob money so they sent mob gofer Manafort to run the campaign. ‘Colluding’ Putin style. Trump always has a fall guy to blame when caught in lie. Sessions claims campaign execs all too inept and overwhelmed to collude on purpose.

TrumpWorld – using presidency to make money the old fashioned way: theft

The president can’t have a conflict of interest.” The Don is above the law?
Fires FBI head because he was investigating The Don’s Russia mob ties.

Trump’s America looks like pre-civil war America: Trumpism is authoritarianism.

"The President would have left American students in a foreign jail because their families didn't lavish sufficient praise on him. How can someone in such a big office be so small?"

2017 Nov. House of Representatives introduced articles of impeachment against President Don Trump, charging him with firing FBI Comey, violations of the Emoluments Clause, actions "undermining" the judiciary and freedom of the press.
