What can your investments do for you?

What can your investments do for you?
Most retail investors have no idea what they should expect from their money over time. Sure, everyone says they want to be rich—tomorrow—like the lottery. Well, if you have played the lottery, you know it is just an additional tax. Odds of winning big prizes are greater than you becoming a star athlete. The most successful investors are those who follow the advice of legends like Warren Buffett and John Bogle. Buffett used Bogle’s low-cost 500 Index to beat the 5 hedge funds run by a Wall Street guru. Buffett used a low-cost 500 large company index because you are almost guaranteed the highest return over time that way. Buffett relied on the compounding of high earnings with low costs over more than 10 years to be assured his wager of $1 million won. Over time, your investment in a low-cost index fund of large companies will be more successful than the average brokerage account owner. Are there exceptions? Sure, but you won’t know until AFTER you lose money to the index. 11% over 30 years can compound your $250 a month 401k or IRA money into $1 million or more. Buffett picked Vanguard’s 500 Index because of the record: One year 31%; 3 year 15%; 5 year 11%; 10 year 13%; 11.15% since 1976. As Bogle said: "Don't look for the needle in the haystack. Just buy the haystack."

If you own a business, almost everything is deductible: pay $0 tax like Don
Our tax system has been set up to favor business. As you learned from our president, he has used the rules to pay ZERO or near zero taxes for years. He says that makes him smart. Looking at his most recent tax law changes, one thing is clear, the wealthy and most business don’t pay tax or pay very little compared to the average tax burden of 33.9% for the middle-class working stiffs. In America, we are better off running a business than working for one. The IRS even lets us reduce our income from business losses so we pay less. However, there are rules for a small business. Rules you need to know include the 50% limit on deduction for meals, no write-off for unpaid invoices, not all startup costs are deductible, not all fringe benefits are deductible, and you can’t deduct if you can’t prove you’re in it for the profits, like Trump. With the internet, it is relatively easy to learn what you need to know on the tax side of the business. You can’t assume anything. Be prepared to pay dearly for tax prep if you can’t do your own business taxes.

Longevity risk: it’s all in the genes
Many folks are living longer. Family genes provide a general rule: if you parents lived past the average age of 79, you probably will too. Most are not prepared to finance 20-30 years of retirement income. About 1 in 3 65-year-olds today will live past age 90, and about 1 in 7 will live past age 95. The standard advisor answer is putting your money into an annuity since they promise to pay a monthly income for the rest of your life. Sounds good but did they explain that inflation will take half the buying power of your monthly income in about 20 years? Insurers price their products at the current low interest rate. Right now you can receive $524 a month with a payment of $100,000 if you are a male age 65. You can’t ‘outlive’ this $524 but by age 85 it will only buy $250 worth of goods. If that $100,000 represented the bulk of your assets, what do you do now? Instead you could take income and keep growing your assets for later. Annuities were fine in the last century when people died by age 68: Not fine now unless you are the seller!

Your employer will now guess at your monthly retirement income
The SECURE Act requires retirement plan sponsors to tell workers how much their current savings will generate in monthly annuity income in retirement. The new law, sponsored by the insurance industry, aims to provide employees with a ‘clearer’ picture about whether or not they’re on track to retire. But your employer’s plan is making a lot of assumptions. First, when will you retire? Second, which investment option do you have and how long has your money been working. A 401k of $100,000 for a married couple could pay around $6,000 a year or $500 a month. The final monthly figure depends on a few annuity factors. Some plan sponsors already use their annuity table which assumes very low interest rates for accumulations and distributions. If you had plans for a higher amount per month from your nest egg, just don’t let your employer talk you into the annuity they now sell. Their ‘guaranteed’ annuity protects them, not you from inflation and insurer collapse. Using a simple low-cost balanced mutual fund, you could earn over 9% a year now and thus spend much more income later.

File for the quickest refund FREE
If you meet certain criteria and have your documents already, federal and state can cost you nothing at https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/. Another site has no income/forms restrictions: https://www.creditkarma.com/tax. The software helps you avoid common mistakes before you file. Even if you make a tiny mistake, the IRS usually catches it without penalty. I have used most of these programs for years even though my income is above the limits. Most charge nothing for the federal and state. Some charge only $12.95 for the state. For 2019, six states have kept the health mandate tax if you don’t have health care cover so that state return may get complicated. Once you file your first year, your previous years’ data is there and pre-fills your forms: Saves a lot of time and money. Try it before you spend $200-300 at a for-profit preparer. No refund due? File to keep your ID from scammers. Your W-2 should be sent to you by Jan 31 according to IRS. Your refund can be in your direct deposit account in 10 days. Check mobile: IRS2Go within 24 hours after IRS receives your e-filed return for status.

Best gift for your young person—lasts a lifetime

Best gift for your young person—lasts a lifetime
Your child or grandchild could have a $2,000,000 Wealth Reserve providing tax-FREE income later in life. Your annual or monthly gift could provide your favorite child with real “social security:” their own tax-FREE money fund. You help them take advantage of the miracle of compounding. Your gift becomes a $1-2,000,000 Wealth Reserve. You could reduce your taxable estate by up  to $500,000 for each child. Your child or grandchild will NEVER have to pay taxes on the money either. Social Security will exhaust its reserve fund in about 2034, according to 2018 projections. Every year you delay helping them with a gift costs your favorite kid $100,000 later.

Rethinking living life to age 100?
Longevity—living longer—and longevity risk—running out of money—are real concerns for anyone age 60 today. Maintaining physical fitness from the beginning to end of life will be paramount. Getting outside, encouraging sports, reducing the time we sit, and spending more time walking and moving will greatly improve individual lives. There is good reason to think we will work longer, but we can improve work quality with shorter workweeks, flexible scheduling and frequent “retirements.” The problem is living in cultures designed for lives half as long as the ones we have. Flexibility is the key to living well longer through different stages than in the past.

Where can you invest $100 for your child’s future?
Teach your child to invest the Buffett way. Success with money starts early. Compounding over time assures your child of security. You have a great opportunity to teach your child how to become successful with money. They can learn to take care of themselves and even become wealthy from your guidance TODAY. You can show them how to take advantage of the greatest power in finance: compound interest and the time value of money. Warren Buffett, who turned his paper route savings into $60 billion, credited compounding over time for his wealth. "My wealth has come from a combination of living in America, some lucky genes, and compound interest." $100 a month can reach $867,000 in time.

Part-time job tax reporting change
IRS ruled recently that if you receive a 1099 MISC for work done which is NOT “your regular trade or business for a profit,” you may report it as miscellaneous income on line 8, 1040 instead of as a new business. Even if the payer makes a mistake and enters it in box 7, you are allowed to treat it as ‘other income’ as in box 3. If you use tax prep software, you are now allowed to move the amount reported in box 7 to box 3. This means you are not forced to complete the self-employment tax Schedule SE and business Schedule C. Usually, miscellaneous payments are for occasional remuneration for a task, not a business or trade involving expenses and the profit potential. Also for retirees, adding payments to their SS earnings record may reduce their future benefits since the remuneration may decrease the average earnings formula calculated annually. Example 1: retired social worker provides part year classes in yoga at her church. Unless she reports the $2500 from box 7 as box 3, she will owe over $800 additional tax or loss of refund. She is not teaching yoga for biz profit and there are no expenses involved in the activity. The IRS will accept reporting non-business income on line 8 despite an entry in box 7 on 1099 MISC. https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/i1099msc--2019.pdf
Example 2: high school student works at local CVS and plays drums for occasional events at a YMCA. He is learning to be a drummer as a future artist. He has expenses like transport, sticks, new heads, etc in pursuit of a profit. His 1099 MISC earnings total is in box 7. He must complete Schedule C and SE since he is an artist for a profit.
Confirm new ruling with your tax preparer.

Social Security will not be enough
Retirees receiving SS benefits in 2020 are getting a raise—a COLA. However, most will see a decrease in benefits since the Medicare B cost has gone up to $144.60 and is often deducted automatically. Looking forward in retirement, this will probably happen in future years. Plus, Congress is not likely to fix the failing SS benefit reserve fund which the trustees warn may cut benefits by 21% in 2034—just 14 years from now. For those near retirement, this is a warning: forget that new car costing over $40,000 and invest it. For those with 20 years or more before retirement, add an extra $250 a month to your 401k, Roth 401k, IRA or Roth IRA now.

How average is your tax deduction for charity?
If you still itemize deductions, this category has not been capped like the property and state income tax category. But how much can you reasonably deduct without generating a letter from the IRS? Perhaps if you stay close to the average for your income level you will be ‘safe.’ No one is ‘safe’ since the average taxpayer is just as likely as the super wealth to be audited. However, most of us don’t have the same lawyers as the tax avoiders do to fight the audit. I am asked how much to deduct by some clients when I do their taxes. I say “whatever you have receipts for.” However, the Vets, Red Cross and others don’t give you a value on your donation receipts. Any valuable item like a $4,000 wheelchair needs an appraisal or purchasing documentation. The IRS provides round numbers here: https://www.usatoday.com/ story/money/taxes/2018/07/06/how-much-average-taxpayer-give-charity-taxes-2018/36561381/ Be prepared to give receipts or docs if you claim much more than your income group average. Fewer middle-income folks are itemizing since the standard deduction was doubled last year. In recent years the IRS has quit auditing many wealthy folks. The IRS goes for the single mother with children since they know she has no money and no lawyer. America now has Socialism for the Rich:

This investment is what most people are looking for
Most ‘investors’ are not traders. They understand that steady growth over time is better for their future happiness than constant worry about the current hot ‘opportunities.’ When we look at the funds that offer both growth and income before and during retirement, we use a fund’s long-term returns as a guide. Recently, a popular site called Seeking Alpha examined a fund that provides a well-rounded solution. The summary: “The Vanguard Wellesley Income fund, a mere conservative balanced fund, outperformed the S&P from 2000 to 2019. This fund proved suitable for all seasons, evidenced by its performance during major market meltdowns (i.e., 2000 and 2008). Three words might describe this fund: longevity, consistency and performance.” A total return of 9.7% since 1970 seems like an exceptional bargain in the growth and income space. A yield of 2.56% makes this fund superior to most fixed annuities for income since your capital is preserved. This is one of our choices for pre and post retirement.

Congress may give insurers and salespeople a big bonus for 2020
If they pass the SECURE Act, "The SECURE Act will make it easier for employers to offer as part of their retirement plans annuities that provide a guaranteed stream of lifetime income," says an insurance lobbyist. Employers and their retirement plan person can entice us into high-cost plans that lock up our retirement dollars into an insurer’s vaults. Using industry trick-phrases like “guaranteed income you can’t outlive” and misleading charts with best possible outcomes, employers can wash their hands of any future responsibility for the inevitable low payouts down the line. For instance, when we chose an annuity of $1000 a month in 2020, we will have no recourse when it buys only $500 a month benefits in 20 years. Currently, a retiree can shop and buy the best annuity deal out there with their money. Under SECURE, employers will be able to escape any future suit when an annuity ‘guarantee’ goes wrong. We are NOT secure with SECURE. Learn the annuity facts: https://www.amazon.com/Annuity-Decision-Tree-questions-answers/dp/1546454497

Trump: ‘Don’t pay ANY taxes like me’

Trump: ‘Don’t pay ANY taxes like me’
The companies that paid nothing in taxes were “able to zero out their federal income taxes on $79 billion in U.S. pretax income,” according to this study. Lowering the rates and using various loopholes, subsidies and credits, Trump eliminated “$20.7 billion in the federal revenue last year” according to the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy. Amazon, Chevron, Netflix, Eli Lilly, IBM, General Motors, etc are reaping tax cut benefits and paying nothing. John Deere, for example, reported earning $2.15 billion in U.S. income before taxes. It owed no U.S. taxes in 2018 and reported the government owes the company $268 million because of various deductions and credits, the report says. We pay for Deere’s profits! The cut in the corporate tax rate alone will save corporations $1.35 trillion over the next 10 years, according to the Joint Committee on Taxation. The cost of interest alone on the national debt runs $896 million each day!

What does it take to build a comfortable nest egg?
Time: Make Money the Old Fashioned Way. Fidelity analyzed its accounts that produced the highest returns. They found that account holders that did NOT 'manage' their accounts or died were the most successful. You can earn more in your investment account by NOT touching your money. When you let someone 'manage' your money they tend to waste it and then charge you to boot. Warren Buffett's teacher, Benjamin Graham, once said: Buy stocks like you buy groceries not perfume. Just buy the stock market index and keep buying. You own the most profitable firms worldwide. Recently, Warren Buffett has proved this strategy. Buffett made a bet with a hedge fund manager for $1 million 10 years ago. Buffett's strategy earned over 7% a year versus 2.2% for Wall Street's 'best and brightest.' He won!  Time and buying a broad group of stocks is what it takes to build a nest egg. Over 30 years, the index earned 11% a year vs 3.79% for a ‘managed’ account.

Do you really need an emergency fund? Make it tax-FREE
Nearly 3 in 10 of us dip into our retirement savings, according to Transamerica. Common reasons for taking 401(k) loans or hardship withdrawals include paying down debt, unplanned medical expenses, and paying for higher education. According to Forbes.com, most of us are taking vacations that we can't afford. One study they quote says that 74% of people say they'll go into debt to pay for their vacation. On average families spend 10% of their annual income on vacations! These withdrawals may get you through a tough time, but they also destroy the growth of your retirement savings, and you could pay penalties on these distributions. You're better off setting aside money for emergencies in a separate mutual fund. Aim to have three to six months' worth of living expenses. When we take from our retirement funds, we destroy the miracle of compounding in the future. We could end up with less than $5,000 in retirement, according to a Northwestern Mutual study. Statistics show that 80% of working people are living paycheck-to-paycheck. Time is the key to compounding and starting over after an emergency devastates a nest egg. Compare how long it takes to catch up with our savings if we have to start over or start late from this graphic: http://www.saferchild.org/power/

10 Best Used Trucks Under $10,000

Many corporations pay NO taxes!
We pay their tax bill, eventually—debt is now $22 Trillion and counting—a $65,600 per person. Avoid future tax increases. You may not have started work with a $100-200 million boost from your father like Trump, but you can create your own tax-FREE stream of income like his. Clearly the Trump tax plan helps businesses and the wealthy. There is no reason why you cannot benefit from the tax code too. Using § 408 of the IRS code, you can create an unlimited account that grows without current or future tax. It eliminates taxes when taken out for your needs and can pass to your heirs totally tax FREE. No matter what your income, this helps you avoid future taxes to pay off the national debt.
With the recent increase in the national debt, you can avoid the future tax increases that are sure to strike most working Americans. Many American corporations and wealthy people have moved their wealth, corporations and the good-paying jobs to other countries. Many avoid taxes with complex tax shelters and subsidiaries.
Luckily, there is a way for you to avoid paying their taxes. You can use a FREE special IRS-approved tax shelter to protect all your savings and investment earnings. You can build a $1/2 million fund by investing $250 a month over time. You can use the tax laws for your benefit like the people in the top 1% income bracket do!

New Jersey insists brokers/advisors MUST give us ‘best available options’
Under the New Jersey regulation, brokers would have to make recommendations about securities and provide investment advice "without regard to the financial or any other interest of the broker-dealer, agent, adviser, any affiliated or related entity … or any other third party." Brokers also must recommend the "best of the reasonably available options" when opening or transferring assets to a specific type of account or suggesting that clients purchase securities or other investments. The proposal also states that disclosing conflicts of interest is not enough to comply with the rule.

Trump new tax avoidance scheme for his buds
IRS has published the new regs for avoiding taxation for Trump’s family and friends’ ‘opportunity zone’ investments. They get to delay taxes. Ivanka and consort Jared have already jumped on this at the Jersey shore. It offers massive tax breaks to developers who invest in ‘downtrodden communities’ like Long Branch, N.J., where oceanfront condos list for $2.7 million. Investors who have capital gains from previous investments can defer taxes if they move them into Opportunity Zone projects. And they can permanently avoid paying taxes on any new gains from investment in the zones if they hold onto the investment for a decade. Thus Trump’s family and friends have set themselves up for FREE money for their future.

Study over 30 years show how to live healthier
The results showed a correlation between healthy behaviors and cardiovascular issues: Women and men who maintained the healthiest lifestyles were 82% less likely to die from cardiovascular disease and 65% less likely to die from cancer when compared to those with the least healthiest lifestyles over the course of the roughly 30-year study period. The study suggested that maintaining these five habits could add up to 10 years or more to a person’s life: 1. Maintain a healthy diet 2. Exercise daily 3. Keep a healthy weight 4. Limit your alcohol intake 5. Don’t smoke.

Tax evaders leave us with the bill

Tax evaders avoid $ billions of taxes and move jobs overseas
1000s of US corporations that profit from our purchases are not paying taxes on their income like we have to. The Supremes decided corporations are people and have “religious freedom.” Yet they don’t pay taxes on their income no matter where they make it—We must pay no matter where we earn it. Since they don’t pay taxes, we must make up the difference.
Is this fair?
Microsoft, for example, with $76.4 billion in foreign earnings, said that if it had brought those earnings home in 2013, it would have reduced the deficit by $24.4 billion. MS would have to pay 32% of income just like we do.
Aren’t you tired of paying the tax bill for MS, Google, Apple, Citi, GE, 1000 others?

Is advisor advice right for you?
In a recent survey, 23 percent of respondents weren’t sure why they do not work with a financial professional. Others said they prefer to make their own decisions (24 percent), and they feel financial professionals are too expensive (23 percent). The 35 percent of respondents who do work with financial professionals share some traits. For example, 68 percent are more likely to have calculated their retirement income need; 53 percent are confident or very confident about maintaining their lifestyle through retirement; but only sixty-eight percent of these respondents plan to continue to work with a financial professional through retirement. New tools online can replace advisors for Gen X.

“5 year hiatus in my 401k cost me $250,000”
Tim writes that he stopped investing at work for about 5 years when he was 33. He thought buying a new car was the right thing to do but it cost him about a quarter million in his retirement fund. He was investing $250 a month in his low cost 500 index fund. He now has $570,000. He figures he must keep working for 5 more years to get to his goal of $800,000. Compound interest makes his nest egg double in about 7-9 years. He will move some of his funds to a bond fund for his retirement income just as Warren Buffett does for his family: http://www.amazon.com/Warren-Buffetts-Vanguard-Funds-Retirement/dp/1496148592

Is a longevity annuity right for you?
The Treasury now allows longevity annuities in retirement plans. However, are they a good deal for you? Proponents argue that we are living longer and these deferred annuities insure lifetime income. Most start paying monthly income at age 85. Putting part of your nest egg in a guaranteed income vehicle sounds great but your money isn't liquid anymore. An emergency could require the money. The interest rates at the time of purchase may be low and thus you lock in low income for the rest of your life. Inflation reduces your purchasing power. Most annuity buyers don’t understand the costs and limits of the product. There are better alternatives that should be considered: http://www.amazon.com/The-Best-Annuity-Strategy-Income/dp/1497532019

GOP Crazies
Boehner's announcement that Republicans would sue President Barack Obama over the administration's decision last year to delay the health care law's employer mandate has left many feeling CRAZY. Crazed and confused!
That's because the GOP House lawmakers ALREADY voted to do the exact same thing -- defer until 2015 the Obamacare requirement aimed at making businesses provide health coverage to their workers, or pay a penalty. Boehner suing Obama because he did what House already made law. Obama is also carrying out the Bush II law giving children crossing border a place to stay for court date and lawyer and judges.

Photosynthesis on leaves makes food and oxygen in ‘photo’
The photo was achieved by using an X-ray laser to record snapshots of molecules as they split in the reaction- a method know as X-ray crystallography. In photosynthesis, oxygen is created at a metal site, which contains a cluster made up of four manganese atoms and one calcium atom. This cluster is the site that drives the light-driven process of water splitting. According to the study, it takes four light flashes to split one oxygen molecule from two water molecules. The X-ray bounces off the materials projects a picture.

More wasted tax dollars
In 2013, federal agencies made $97 billion in overpayments, according to agency estimates. Underpayments totaled $9 billion. The amount of improper payments has steadily dropped since 2010, when it peaked at $121 billion. This $100 B does not include over $125 B to corporations as tax-FREE loans or $100 B subsidies to make oil, ethanol, sugar, peanuts, cotton, beef, on and on and also NOTHING at all. Congress people like Bachmann receive money to NOT plant on farms they don’t live or work on. Bachmann is a Swiss citizen. The farm bill cut food stamps to increase crop subsidies.

Now you will have no private life at all.

SCAMS           Why are we still paying $700 Billion a year for WWII deployments?
We are paying for 164,253 of our active-duty armed personnel to be in 150 countries around the world. We have about 50,000 in Japan and 50,000 in Germany.
Are we preparing for WWII again? There are 1,208,083[1] armed personnel in the United States. Our taxes pay for about HALF of the WORLD’s military expenditures every year. We have wasted $398.6 billion so far on the F-35 program—they can’t fly safely.
We just can’t afford to pay for everyone else’s defenses anymore.
Japan, Germany and S. Korea can pay for its own defense.

Supremes allow corporations to decide coverage—no more cancer treatments are next?
Supreme Court ruled that the owners of private companies may refuse on religious grounds to offer employees insurance coverage for birth control. Some religions claim that death by natural means is God’s will. Scalia and Co face many NEW requests to cancel health insurance now. Constitution does NOT guarantee equal treatment for all according to Supreme majority. Congress must decide to stop Supreme’s change to Constitution’s guarantee for equal treatment for all.
