Missing tax
forms?
Some mutual
funds and brokers have delayed sending our reporting forms so far. They were due
to us by February 1 but the IRS does not enforce their rule. Despite the
delay or lack of forms, we are required to file by April 18 this year. Missing
data can be estimated using a form (4852) the IRS sends to us. We will usually
file an amended return (1040X) to provide the correct information where
possible. From my experience it is better to file a return in time even if you
have a valid excuse. Even if you are not
required to file, the filing form may be helpful in some situations. You
can avoid paying someone to file your return by using the IRS site: https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free.
