Are interval funds right for you?
An interval fund is a type of closed-end mutual fund that doesn’t trade on public exchanges. Interval funds are among a broader class of limited liquidity structures—that including business development companies, tender offer funds and non-traded REITs—are meant to be more accessible to retail investors with lower minimums, no drawdowns, simplified tax reporting and regular liquidity windows (intervals). Interval funds have investment minimums as low as $25,000 to $50,000 and are open to accredited investors. They typically provide redemptions up to 5% per quarter. Most carry some cash reserves or a liquidity sleeve alongside their core investment strategy in order to make that liquidity available. Interval funds are popular as a vehicle for debt and fixed income strategies. As of 2022, about 60% of interval funds fit into this bucket. Real estate is another popular asset class for interval funds. The fund periodically offers to buy back a percentage of outstanding shares at net asset value (NAV). The rules for interval funds, along with the types of assets they hold, make this investment largely illiquid as compared with other funds. High yields are the main reason investors are attracted to interval funds. Minimum investments are often between $10,000 and $25,000 and have expense ratios as high as 3%. This is way beyond the 0.04% cost of an index fund. Your sales fee of 5.75% may lower your returns also. Calculate the impact of all costs on the fund you invest in since promises of high yield are not guarantees.

Yes, because the compounding of stock returns over time, you can create a $1 million fund in about 34 years. You pay about $102,000 over time and compounding does the rest. The average annual stock market return is 11%. From 1989 to 2022, the return was 11.94% before inflation. $250 per month is manageable for most folks. That may be a new car or the total internet plus screening program fees. As long as you are not paying off a huge debt, $250 is a small price to pay for a comfortable retirement. And a $ million may not be enough since people are living longer and medical bills are getting higher. Since 1976, the Vanguard 500 Index fund (VFINX) has provided over 11% average annual return. After 20 years your balance is over $200,000. As the fund pays dividends you pay no tax on interest annually. As a regular investor, this is the best set up for a life of growth and income.
