Trump has already promised that we not Mexico will pay for The Wall. The tax cut for corporations will be paid by us as a new tariff (‘border adjustment tax’ fools nobody) of over $1 trillion. Walmart, Dollar Gen and oil refiners are already reminding us they will just pass the tax on to us as price hikes. Mad Max maker Mnuchin fears a global tariff war while Exec VP Bannon claims Boeing and GE will smile. Meanwhile our real wages will continue to slide from the high in 1973. If we get a tax cut of 4.9% as promised, it will be taken by Walmart et al. And what about The Don’s promise of the return of the $25 an hour jobs. When you look at the facts—real facts—that robot sales have tripled in some industries, first in cars and now in every unskilled worker job, you might want to show The Don the new factory. Some robots cost only $25,000 and so more jobs require running a computer than a lathe. He should learn that today’s firm must constantly retrain workers just to stay competitive. Instead of building The Wall and giving tax cuts, he should be giving corporations a tax CREDIT for worker training. The border tax will not be enough to pay for his tax cuts.

GOP states continue to keep Dems from voting

AR reinstated a voter ID law that was found as unconstitutional by the state Supreme Court 2014. The only voter charged with voter fraud this year is the GOP chairman in CO, Steve Curtis. Dems do not need to cheat at the voting booth because they can elect winners every time unless the GOP and their Russian friends cheat. Trump has claimed that millions cheated on the last election that HE WON. He forgot his civics lessons: It is legitimate to be registered in multiple states. Most of his family and colleagues do just that and yet they are not charged with voter fraud. Perhaps if the Dems checked in PA and MI they would find enough GOP voting twice for Trump that the actual president is Hillary. Other GOP states have continued to make up stories of fraud in order to keep Dems from voting at the places and times they have voted in the past. Voter suppression is bigger than fraud. Now the GOP uses the tactic of changing Dems normal voting places.

The Don is signing an executive order to promote domestic oil, coal and natural gas by reversing much of Obama’s leadership in world warming. Dismantling Obama’s plan is misguided at best. Even Exxon knows we are headed in the wrong direction. Short-sighted action has consequences. America has made progress in slowing emissions and abundant gas will nix oil and coal expansion. An adult who knows better would do what is best for America’s future. For instance, would an adult cut medical research, infrastructure and community development grants to help pay for an expensive luxury? Mexico will NOT pay for The Wall and no adult would promise something they did not know they could do for sure. An extra tax on things we buy from Mexico may not pass Congress. The Don wants to cut research into medical cures and funding for new roads and bridges here at home. These are tangible benefits. The Wall is easily tunneled under. How can you leave your brokerage advisor for a better deal?

I help people do their taxes as an AARP tax aide. Some have brokerage accounts or mutual funds that are not giving them the returns they want. They can’t tell me what their advisor has put in their account when I try to determine short or long-term securities. They look like they never even asked what they own. I cannot discuss their assets or situation since I am a volunteer with AARP. However, I point out that many investors are going to Vanguard because of the low-cost funds they offer—both index and managed. Retirees do not have enough time to weather a market storm of minus 25%. Typically, advisors move their clients into bank-like securities—GICs, Stable Value, Cash equivalents—when they stop working. But clients have 30 to 40 years ahead and need growth and income. Actually some have huge bank savings producing $400 to $800 in taxable interest every year. I can’t suggest that they buy a balanced fund like Vanguard’s Wellesley Income so they can earn 8-9% for their future retirement needs. What do Trump voters think about his lies? IRS says there is no reason he cannot release his taxes. The Don says voters don’t care yet 74% say he should release his tax returns. His voters wanted affordable health insurance coverage NOT just access to substandard coverage. They don’t want to file bankruptcy because of a hospital stay. His voters wanted to shake up the system but not end miners training, clean air and water, Meals on Wheels, child lunch program and Big Bird. Why aren’t voters upset that Trump did not cut the $ billions of corporate subsidies and lobbyists instead of programs for the poor?  And what about drug prices he promised to cut? Why hasn’t he negotiated lower health care costs? Do voters get a laugh when he accuses the former president and our allies of tapping his phone? Do his supporters think FBI lies when “no support” for Trump’s claim of wiretap? Do his voters still think Obama is not an American after Trump kept saying it for 5 years? Do voters like his unseemly deference to the dictator Putin? Are they OK with Putin invading Ukraine and Eastern Europe? Why do many of his top people seem to be tied to Russian oligarchs? What does Putin have on Trump that causes this softness?

Do voters believe the crazy entertainers that permeate the conservative radio, TV and blogs like Rush, Fox, Levin, Breitbart, Info, etc that tell Trump what to think?

What will you do when GOP tells you buy your own insurance or go without?

If you are earning under $50 an hour will you be able to pay $15,000 to $25,000 to insure your household? If you are employed part time or not able to buy at work, will you be able to afford a stripped-down policy at $2,000 each for your family? Despite what Trump says, you may have access to only 1 policy you can afford and it may not cover a hospital stay or surgery. Half the bankruptcies were medical debt in 2001. Two of my doctors won’t take insurance, and the others are not very good. Millionaire Congressmen pitch “choice” and “competition will reduce the cost of insurance” but in most of America there is no competition. As Romney boasted, “I want to fire my insurer” if I don’t like them. Trump and Congress can afford to do that because we give them outstanding health coverage. Health insurance is like our military defense. Conservative Congressmen do NOT mind paying Lockheed a subsidy for the F-35 fighter program. They pay every over-budget bill from Lockheed even though the bills are a “disgrace.”

Why is keeping all Americans healthy any different? 24 million will die early.

How great is The Don’s deal making, really?

Consider all The Don’s foreign building projects when you remember that he had to take his US deals (Taj, Plaza, Trump Air, etc,) to bankruptcy court 6 times. Since the banks are not likely to want to be hosed again, The Don goes to the “bank” of last resort: the mob. He has extensive contacts in Russia at a time when the USSR’s assets and businesses are being taken by “only the strong Ivans survive.” He makes a deal with the notorious Azerbaijani oligarchs tied to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard. The development deal does not go well.
