Many readers’ portfolios have returned to their values as of August 2022
In a poll of my readers I have determined that for us “holding-period-forever” folks there has been little movement in the value of our well-balanced portfolio. Not one of us sold during the market drop of 18% in 2022. So we did not sell in a down market as Warren Buffett has recommended. We sold our losing speculative stocks in order to take advantage of the $3,000 loss deduction for 2022 taxes. We bought similar stocks to avoid a “wash sale” penalty. Those similar stocks have risen 38% and 63% since the beginning of 2023 since they began at a very low base. They may eventually crash and burn but they have not changed the whole portfolio so far. Our balanced portfolio can continue to grow in order to provide us with a steady stream of income, provide tax advantages, and can grow tax-deferred over time. In fact, a portfolio like ours is better than an annuity because our portfolios are in low-cost accumulation accounts that don’t lose benefit values to inflation. Better than an annuity, in that our families can use the legacy during their lives instead of losing it to the insurer. We can continue to receive our increasing RMD each month. Our benefit will not lose ½ its benefit’s value in 25 years due to inflation. If we need cash for an emergency or new home, we can take our principal anytime (no penalty). Annuities are insurer contracts that restrict our money withdrawals.

Why are Congress and Fed only going after worker jobs to fight inflation?
Why don’t we use a balanced approach to lowering inflation—everyone shares the suffering? GOP wants to cut the benefits we already paid for and increase defense spending. Why don’t we use both tax increases for the wealthy people who scored big from the Trump tax cuts of 2017 and slashes to the corporate subsidies that add to the super profits of large corporations? We could bar unlimited corporate cash to all Congress people to keep them in office. Ask every gov department to cut spending 10%. Everyone needs a trim from time to time. Allow IRS to capture the tax dollars we know the rich are hiding using sophisticated tax avoidance techniques. Most corporations pay few taxes while the IRS target low-income Black men. It is not fair to target low-wage workers to give up their jobs to lower inflation others caused. How many airplanes can the wealthy buy with their Trump tax cuts? Higher demand for luxury goods causes inflation more than workers getting a 1-2% wage increase. We added 700,000 more millionaires in just one year. The number of wealthy folks increases annually while the number of workers in poverty rose too—inequality gets higher.

IRS: Why refunds are smaller this year
Due to tax law changes such as the elimination of the Advance Child Tax Credit and no Recovery Rebate Credit this year to claim pandemic-related stimulus payments, many taxpayers may find their refunds somewhat lower this year. To avoid refund delays, IRS encourages taxpayers to file their tax return electronically with direct deposit instead of submitting a paper tax return. Taxpayers may use IRS Free File on IRS.gov, other tax software or a trusted tax professional. Members of the armed forces and qualifying veterans can file their federal tax return and up to three state tax returns for free electronically using MilTax, a Department of Defense program. The IRS cannot issue refunds involving the Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit before mid-February. The law provides the extra time to help the IRS prevent fraudulent refunds. Use IRS.gov to get answers to tax questions, check a refund status or pay taxes. Some 2021 tax returns and amended returns are still being processed so check https://www.irs.gov/filing/wheres-my-amended-return. This year, the filing deadline is April 18 for most taxpayers, but automatic six-month extensions of time to file are available for anyone for free.
