Taxes from advisor 'rebalancing'?

Tax increase due to advisor “rebalancing”?
Advisors promote this buy and sell activity to justify their quarterly fee charges. Is it really helpful to you? You pay more tax. Vanguard did a test of many types of rebalancing strategies. None were superior. Selling your winners and buying your losers creates taxes, fees and commissions. It lowers your annual total return as well as your overall volatility. The costs reduce the total return so this strategy seems to have only one result: fee generation. Quarterly rebalancing also justifies your advisor’s lifestyle. ‘Doing nothing’ is hard to justify for a fee.
A better strategy—‘Do Nothing’ as Warren Buffett says. http://www.amazon.com/The-Wealth-Tao-Wu-Wei/dp/1499351348

Advisers NOT telling total costs so we lose up to 63% of earnings
The average total cost their clients actually pay is 1.83% of assets, the survey of 159 advisers found. Total costs include the adviser fee, administrative fee, platform fee and product fee. Most advisers are required to list their fees but don’t. The costs that some advisers don't fully account for include administrative fees, which can be buried in prospectus documents, and platform fees, Mr. Carson said. John Bogle, Vanguard founder, estimates we can lose 63% of possible nest egg to costs.
No need to lose up to 63% of your TOTAL accumulations: http://www.amazon.com/Keep-More-What-Earn-Diversification/dp/1479293474

401k up 12.7% (if you left your money alone)
Vanguard reports that the average 401(k) account balance rose from $56,000 in 2008 to $102,000 in 2013. And even factoring in contributions, Vanguard research analyst Jean Young reports that one study of 401(k) participants, conducted by the firm, showed an average annual return rate of 12.7% over the same five-year period. Household income averaged up much less at the current median figure of $52,959. American Dream dead?
A CNN/ORC International poll in 2014 showed that 59 percent of Americans believe the
American dream is impossible, compared to 40 percent who say they believe it is. College grads under age 30 have huge student loan payment at gouge rates and can’t find jobs that can carry the debt. Some have gone home to parents. Many share rooms. Some work many part time jobs. Some try starting new business with no money. Few average students are making their way. Fewer still are starting their savings/investing plan. Starting early is key to having enough tax-FREE: http://www.amazon.com/New-American-Retirement-System-Tax-FREE/dp/1461030072

Advisers escape responsibility for mistakes by filing
“Bankruptcy offers advisers a chance to transform a crisis into an opportunity — not just to clear their financial slate, but to better relate to clients' struggles with money.” So says adviser industry.
What about our money? Their opportunity—but our losses.

Wall Street exec sees another tax payer bailout!
BlackRock Inc.'s Laurence Fink, who oversees the world's biggest ETF lineup, said leveraged ETFs are a structural problem and have the potential to "blow up" the industry. These index funds (exchange-traded funds) are becoming popular with advisors because they can earn fees/commissions. Leveraging (using bank money) creates bigger losses or gains.

Smart investors earn 13% a year
A survey of defined contribution investors (401k) shows that simple rules of investing pay off. Savvy savers use only low-fee, high-yield compounding accounts. GOP crazies say God helped him stop amnesty for kids
“God acted through people on my behalf,” new tea party winner Dave Brat said on Fox News shortly after his victory over House leader Cantor. Cantor wasn’t exactly caught sleeping. He spent $1 million in the weeks leading up to the primary on television ads calling Brat a “liberal college professor,” and sent out mailers boasting he’d blocked “amnesty” on Capitol Hill. Apparently not enough. Far right voters saw those 47,000 kids in prison camps awaiting deportation and didn’t want the House giving them amnesty. So we are giving the kids lawyers so they can fight! Where are the embassies?

MN Uninsured Has Plunged 40 Percent Under Obamacare
Minnesota has seen its uninsured rate plunge by more than 40% since the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, according to a new study released this week.
The study, released by researchers at the University of Minnesota, provided the first look at Obamacare's effect on a single state's insured rate. It found that the number of uninsured in Minnesota fell from 445,000 (about 8.2% of the population) to about 264,500 (about 4.9% of the population).
The decrease is similar to the effects in Massachusetts after similar healthcare reforms were implemented there in 2006. It's a larger increase than the Congressional Budget Office has projected for the entire United States — a drop from 54 million under previous law to 42 million under the Affordable Care Act.

Insurers now racing to join ObamaCare
Ten insurers are seeking approval to sell 504 separate health plans next year on the Illinois health insurance exchange, a dramatic increase from 2014, Illinois said Thursday. The surge in interest in the Illinois exchange allays widespread concerns that carriers would walk away from offering coverage under the Affordable Care Act next year because sicker-than-expected pools of patients would sign up and raise financial risks associated with participating. Last year, just six insurers offered 165 policies in Illinois.
More insurance companies are expressing an interest in selling policies on Kentucky's health-benefit exchange next year -- a move state officials say will benefit consumers.
All five insurance companies that sold policies this year on the exchange known as Kynect want to come back for 2015, and at least one other -- CareSource -- wants to join them. State officials said they are optimistic that several other insurers will file in the next few weeks to sell policies in the coming year on the exchange. Kynect is an online insurance marketplace offering health insurance plans for Kentuckians. It was created last year by Gov. Steve Beshear, as called for in the federal Affordable Care Act.

SCAMS           Why are we still paying $700 Billion a year for WWII deployments?
We are paying for 164,253 of our active-duty armed personnel to be in 150 countries around the world. We have about 50,000 in Japan and 50,000 in Germany.

Did your long-term care insurer NOT PAY your claim?
Sometimes you need legal help getting claims paid because insurers’ fine print. Your facility must have a specific license and the appropriate personnel and care. You must have hospitalization confinement first. Insurers deny payment for light housekeeping or errands a caregiver runs for the policyholder. You forgot to pay premium.

More Women Than Men Outliving Their Resources, Surviving In Poverty
"Women tend to live longer, to have not worked in jobs that provided them with enough pensions and/or pay as much, so they don't put as much into the Social Security system," an observer said. "So, they're living longer with fewer resources and that's a problem with a lot of the women we see. They have problems making ends meet."
Men generally have careers that take them through retirement, Martinsen, director of the Area Agency on Aging, said. In their own old age, then, "women often end up, having families living with them or having to access financial support from them, or from the government for medical or housing subsidies," Martinsen said. AXA annuity caught misleading clients
A New York regulator alleges that AXA limited the returns of legacy variable annuity clients. AXA contract changes may have lowered the value of certain guaranteed benefits that are eligible for periodic benefit base resets; clients are only eligible for a benefit base reset when his or her account value rises, according to the regulator. If the changes limited returns, clients would lose the benefit base reset.

Obama sticking with 2010 law against tax evasion—banks fighting since 2010
As a new U.S. anti-tax evasion law is poised to take effect on July 1, the Obama administration has rebuffed requests by banking groups to delay implementation.
The Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) will require foreign banks, insurers and investment funds to send the IRS information about Americans' offshore accounts worth more than $50,000. Banks failing to comply could effectively be frozen out of U.S. capital markets.
We bailout banks and hedge funds AGAIN
IMF provided 18 BILLION to Ukraine. This amounts to a bail-out for Russian state banks and Western funds accused of propping up the previous regime and for vulture funds that bought Ukrainian debt cheaply for quick gain. Unlike Greece and Cyprus, debtors will receive 100% payback. Tim Ash, from Standard Bank, said: “Ukraine has been the ultimate moral hazard play and it’s cavalier to expect taxpayers to cover this.”

Taxpayers buy $1 million propaganda supporting NJ Christie
Lawyers hired by Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey at public expense issued their findings Thursday on the traffic jams at the George Washington Bridge in September, apparently engineered as a bizarre form of political revenge. To no one’s surprise, Mr. Christie’s lawyers have found his hands to be clean. He was without fault, they declared. This glossy political absolution cost the taxpayers of New Jersey more than $1 million in legal fees. We can now add this expensive whitewash to the other evidence of trouble in Mr. Christie’s administration. The report implies that his direct report Bridget Anne Kelly was distraught over a broken affair at the time of the Bridgegate. It also implies that the Hoboken mayor could not have been rebuked by the Deputy Gov because she was smiling at party.
“Sometimes, people do inexplicably stupid things,” Christie tells Sawyer.
You’re right, Gov.

The Essential Financial Life

Keep It Simple: The Essential Financial Life
The best guarantee of lifelong security is having money.
Complicated finance doesn't work.
Complicated products are expensive.
Complicated money plans are not followed.
Wouldn’t you like to assure yourself of tax-FREE growth and income for the rest of your life? We don't need complicated insurance, mutual funds, or financial products to have the good life. We avoid the two KILLERS of wealth accumulation—taxes and fees.
I help you decide which financials are best for you, now and later. You make your money work harder for YOU; not your advisors. You don't give them 2-3% of your money every year. Your investment edge is … the miracle of compounding. http://www.amazon.com/Keep-Simple-Essential-Financial-Life/dp/1492258849

Do you support American-made goods? Buy a Toyota Camry not Ford Fusion

Are you liable for damages if you text a driver causing an accident?
A New Jersey appeals court ruled on Tuesday that a person could have a legal duty to avoid texting with someone who is driving. Disagreeing with a lower court, a panel of judges found that when a motorist is texting while driving and causes an accident, the person who was exchanging messages with the driver can also be liable for negligence.
But the bar is high. The person had a “special reason” to know the driver was on the road and would read the messages. Only in NJ though.

Did you celebrate Labor Day?
Underemployment rate near 15%. Not much to party about. Labor lost to capital: Wages fell as productivity grew nearly 8%. Output and profits increased as workers earned less. Capital earned more. The Economic Policy Institute estimates that between 2007 and 2012, wages fell for the lowest 70 percent of all wage earners, despite productivity growth of 7.7 percent. Since 1978, CEO pay at American firms has risen 725 percent, more than 127 times faster than worker pay over the same time period, according to new data.
As a result, American income inequality has skyrocketed, growing worse than it is in countries like Pakistan and Ivory Coast. Wealth inequality is worse than it was even in Ancient Rome. And, as pay skyrockets and tax rates fall for the richest Americans, the rising inequality has left the bottom 95 percent of Americans saddled with more debt than ever before.

Broker infractions on display

Texans skip ObamaCare and go to ER
Texas again leads the nation in the rate of uninsured. More than 25 percent of the state's population under age 65 -- 5,771,479 people -- has no health insurance coverage, according to recent Census Bureau data. In 24 Texas counties, a third or more of residents are uninsured. Many of the uninsured are working adults whose employers do not offer insurance coverage or for whom the cost of coverage is prohibitive.
The health care needs of the uninsured do not go away simply because they lack health insurance. The cost of providing care to these 5.7 million people is borne by hospitals, taxpayers, and the privately insured. Hospitals are providing $5.5 Billion in uncompensated care each year. Premium costs for private insurance are $1,800 higher, on average, due to uncompensated care for the uninsured.

Wealthy buy another country residency
Southern Europe’s cash-strapped governments are wooing wealthy home buyers from overseas by offering so-called golden visas to purchasers of high-end properties. Use your tax refund to insure future needs

Lifestyle Insurance: Use your tax refund to build a tax-FREE trust
...Most of us are overpaying for insurance, investments, taxes, etc
...We “waste” our $3,000 tax refund each year.
...We could be building assets to insure our “lifestyle.”
...We could use an IRS §408 trust for tax-FREE income.
...Each $3,000 invested is worth $100,000 eventually
Most of us waste our largest savings amount: our tax refund, average $3,022 a year. Most of us waste more than $3,000 every year on financial products and services. If we invested that $3,000 a year, we could have all the assets we need to protect our families and futures using a tax-FREE trust. Wealthy are better off now, even with taxes
A survey from Northern Trust found that three quarters of millionaires surveyed said they are better off, or as well off, as they were in 2007 - the peak for both wealth and sheer numbers of America's millionaires. Most cited improved investment returns as their reason for feeling better off. Where should you live if you want to be a millionaire?
Try Houston or San Jose. According to the new Metro Wealth Index from Capgemini, San Jose, Calif. andHouston recorded the fastest percentage growth in the number of millionaires among the top 10 Metro areas.

Is your mutual fund really overcharging you 12% per year?
New analysis shows that the real cost of managed funds is close to 12% when you own large stock funds run by a manager charging you 1% per year. This is why: investors should consider fees charged by active managers not as a percentage of total returns but as incremental fees versus risk adjusted incremental   returns above the market index. In other words, if a low-cost index can produce 7% return and your manager earned 8%, you should only pay for the extra 1%. If the manager took $10,000 (1%) on your portfolio of $1 million, and added only $80,000 (8%), you paid 12.5% for the increase--10K/80K.

Bait and Switch: Health insurers raise the price AFTER you compare to other plans
Eighty percent of U.S. health insurance plans raise premiums above the original quoted price for a portion of their applicants, a health consumer firm says. HealthPocket analysis found on average, plans increased premiums for 18 percent of applicants. However, plans in some states rarely increase premium.Pennsylvania health insurance plans raised premiums for 32 percent of applicants. Premiums are typically the largest out-of-pocket healthcare costs for the average consumer and a major factor in health plan selection.
Companies that increased premiums on applicants most frequently were for-profit Blue Cross Blue Shield companies. Anthem Health Plans in Virginia, part of Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, raised premiums for more than two-thirds of applicants. The non-profit Pacific Source Health Plans in Idaho was second highest within this ranking. Buy only what you need: http://www.amazon.com/Health-Insurance-ONLY-right-policy/dp/1480125083

Insurers fight state laws requiring gun insurance
Insurers are resisting a push by state legislators to mandate that gun owners buy coverage tied to the weapons’ risk, saying such laws may encourage irresponsible behavior. Lawmakers want gun owners to cover the losses from gun accidents. Insurers think that mandating gun insurance will make gun use more likely because owners “will not have their own assets, property or income at stake.”  “I’m really looking at people who are injured as a result of somebody’s negligence in the way that they store a gun or the way that they handle a gun,” Democratic state Representative David Linsky, who proposed the bill in Massachusetts. Insurers should set rates that reflect the types and number of weapons owned by a policyholder and how the guns are stored, he said. Insurers can’t insure intentional acts but could require gun locks and safety training.

Senator Warren asks bank regulators about “Too big for trial.”
“Tell me a little bit about the last few times you've taken the biggest financial institutions on Wall Street all the way to a trial," the Massachusetts lawmaker said to applause, speaking to the federal regulators gathered for a hearing on Wall Street reform.
No witnesses spoke up.
Warren raised her eyebrows. "Anybody?" she asked.
Thomas Curry, head of the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, spoke up: "We've actually had a fair number of consent orders. We do not have to bring people to a trial..."
"I appreciate that you say you don't have to bring them to trial," Warren said. "My question is,when did you bring them to trial?"
"We have not had to do it as a practical matter to achieve our supervisory goals," Curry said.
"I'm really concerned that 'too big to fail' has become 'too big for trial,'" Warren later said.

Insiders made 1700% on Heinz deal—but $1.7 mil “profit” is now frozen
The SEC is alleging that the traders must have known in advance about the pending transaction based on inside information. The traders bought call options to make a huge profit of roughly 1,700 per cent after the acquisition was announced.
Call options let “investors” place a bet on a stock without committing to buy the shares. The insiders have the option to buy the shares later for a set price. The Swiss account hadn't traded securities related to Heinz for nearly six months before purchasing the options, the SEC said in a complaint filed in federal court in New York.
"Irregular and highly suspicious options trading immediately in front of a merger or acquisition announcement is a serious red flag that traders may be improperly acting on confidential nonpublic information," Daniel Hawke, an SEC official, said in a statement. The brokerage account at GoldmanSachs probably handles trading for a number of foreign banks that allow customers to use a trust or other entity that masks the identity of the true owner.

The exchanges set minimum standards for healthcare and allow those who don't have insurance through their employer to comparison shop for the plan they like best -- much like how travel websites allow comparison shopping for airline tickets.
The Obamacare law does not mandate a state create a health insurance exchange, but does hold that if an individual state does not create their own exchange or partner with the federal government to create one, the federal government will create one for them. Most Democratic states have moved to create their own exchange while most Republican-controlled states have resisted. Insurers and Feds dragging out Sandy payment process
Hopes of getting the hardest-hit stretches of the Jersey Shore rebuilt by next summer are fading, as delays in insurance settlements mount and uncertainty hangs over federal aid. Insurers used the same tactic for Katrina repairs. Some are still unpaid.
More than 70,000 property owners have filed claims with the National Flood Insurance Program, according to FEMA. The agency would not say how many of those claims had been settled, but in communities up and down the Shore, property owners and local officials reported that only a small percentage of homeowners had seen flood insurance settlements two months after Sandy made landfall.
Some property owners filed with FEMA and were sent small business loan applications instead of receiving help. The application is longer than a new home mortgage app.

Why Sandy help was not approved—more Washington games
The Sandy bill contained pork—spending for projects that have nothing to do with Hurricane Sandy or the victims, including millions of dollars for tree planting in areas untouched by Sandy and a new roof for theSmithsonian Museum. Only $1 out of every $6 — $9 billion of the $60 billion will be spent in 2013. That means 85 percent doesn’t come until 2014 and beyond.
The bill also provides $336 million for Amtrak (10 times President Obama’s request of $32 million), $150 million for fishery disaster relief, for which recipients in Alaska and Mississippi will be eligible, $50 million for the National Park Service’s historic preservation fund (twice its annual funding), and $50 million for employee retraining programs.  According to the Heritage Foundation’s Matt A. Mayer, there is $28 billion for “future disaster-mitigation projects on the East Coast,” which is a large component of the 64 percent of the funding that will be spent after 2014.  Whether or not these unrelated spending initiatives are worthwhile, they deserve more scrutiny than they will receive as part of an enormous Sandy relief bill being rushed through a lame-duck session of Congress.

Save 40% on homeowner's insurance

Homeowner’s Insurance
Beware: False coverage Save 40% with the right policy
=Your home may be classified or rated incorrectly.
=You may be paying for endorsements you don't need.
=Your premium may be based on land which isn't covered.
=Save 40% with the right policy.
The key question in homeowner's insurance is:
Are you willing to pay more every year to replace your home exactly as it is at the time of a total loss, even though a total loss is very rare?
Most of the things you would think are covered, are NOT.

FL uninsured die without care
Nearly 44 Floridians die each week because they do not have health coverage, according to Families USA, a consumer advocacy organization. That's more than six people a day. That should be enough to prompt Gov. Scott to accept the federal government's offer of three free years of expanded Medicaid coverage.

MI could cover 600,000 uninsured and save $1 billion with ObamaCare, study says
Michigan could save nearly $1 billion over 10 years—while extending comprehensive health insurance to more than 600,000 Michigan citizens—if the state expands Medicaid eligibility beginning in 2014 as provided for under the Affordable Care Act according to a CHRTstudy.

Is a 529 college saving plan right for you?
Tax-FREE savings and no withdrawal penalty—that is the promise of the 529 plans. The bonus: if your state gives you a tax deduction for contributions! The unseen caveats are the costs. Unless you pick a state plan with no commissions and low-cost investments, these plans are not for you. Now the unbiased rating agency, Morningstar, has checked all 529 plans and picked 4 to head your list of finalists:
Alaska's T. Rowe Price College Savings Plan; the Maryland College Investment Plan; Nevada's Vanguard 529 Savings Plan; and the Utah Educational Savings Plan.
Four other plans earned silver-medal honors from Morningstar. Those 529 plans are sponsored byArkansas, Michigan, Ohio and Virginia.
THE REST: Nineteen plans were rated bronze, 33 "Neutral" and four "Negative."
You don’t need to live in the state to use their 529. Some states (Arizona, Kansas, Maine, Missouri, andPennsylvania) give you an income tax break on 529 contributions made to any state's plan. Our Guide helps you save http://www.amazon.com/Insiders-Guides-Discount-Financial-Services/dp/143480593X/

CA to raise rates 85% on long-term care owners over two years in 2015
CalPERS is preparing to impose a rate hike of up to 85 percent on most of its long-term care insurance policyholders. The rate hike would begin in 2015 and would be phased in over two years. It would affect three-fourths of the 150,000 CalPERS members who've bought long-term care policies, which pay for stays in nursing homes, convalescent homes and so on. CalPERS hopes the rate hike will "stabilize" the long-term care insurance program, which has been hit with higher-than-expected claims and lower-than- expected investment returns. The program gets no taxpayer funding. There are alternatives to LTCi: http://www.amazon.com/Long-term-Care-Insurance-better-alternatives/dp/147006877X

CA drivers with Mercury may see a 4% increase in rates
Mercury General is raising auto insurance rates by $63 million on its customers, an average 4% rate hike for 990,000 Mercury auto insurance policyholders in California. CA moving poor children to Medicaid to save $73 million
The state is eliminating its Healthy Families program and moving those children into the state's Medicaid program to save a projected $73 million a year. CA contends that the shift will help streamline children's health care and reduce government complexities. But state lawmakers and children's advocates are concerned about the possibility of having children's medical services disrupted.

Our democracy at risk—The rich tell employees to Vote GOP or lose job!
Koch Industries, the company that paid for MN Gov to strip unions of rights, sent a voter information packet to 45,000 employees of its Georgia Pacific subsidiary earlier this month. In it was a letter, dated Oct. 1, from Koch Industries president Dave Robertson implicitly warning that "many of our more than 50,000 U.S. employees and contractors may suffer the consequences" of voting for President Obama and other Democrats in the 2012 elections, a list of conservative candidates the company's political action committee endorses and a pair of editorials: one, by David Koch, supporting Mitt Romney, and the other, by Charles Koch, condemning Obama. Other employers do this too.
It is not illegal but is it healthy for our democracy?
Is it healthy to let the rich give unlimited dollars to candidates’ superpacs?
Foreign corporations are among the largest contributors to Romney’s Pacs: Credit Suisse Group AG ($554,066) and Barclays PLC ($403,800).

Cost of living SS increase taken away by Part B increase
Monthly Social Security benefits for more than 56 million retirees will increase 1.7% in 2013, less than half the 3.6% increase that they received this year. Retirees received no cost-of-living adjustment in either 2010 or 2011. Despite the increase scheduled for next year, most Social Security recipients may not receive bigger benefit checks as the increase could be mostly offset by higher Medicare Part Bpremiums, which typically are deducted from Social Security benefits.

Study says making Medicare a voucher would cost $1200 extra
If the shift had taken place in 2010, and Medicare enrollees had tried to stay in the same plans, the percentage of enrollees who would have had to pay $100 or more in additional premiums per month could have been 50 percent in Nevada, 57 percent in New Jersey and 77 percent in Florida.http://www.kff.org/medicare/upload/8373.pdf

Save on Title insurance
A Re-Fi or home purchase requires title insurance to protect the lender against “defects” (mistakes/holds) in the title (deed or builder) holder. “Defects” are anything that prevents clear ownership transfer. Defects include liens (unpaid bills) on the property, outstanding taxes, outstanding claims or lawsuits. With computerization, defects don’t happen often but this protection is required to close the loan. You pay for the insurance in one premium at closing. Instead of paying the lawyer or lender to obtain this contract, you can do it yourself and save. You may also have the title company do the closing and save the cost of attorney review/closing. Instead of paying for a lawyer to review the documents and charge $20 per FedEx, have a title/closing firm like http://www.entitledirect.com/handle the closing electronically.
